Ceasefire deal brokered in Guri’el
MOGADISHU -- Federal Government of Somalia and the paramilitary group of Ahlu Sunna Wal Jamea signed a ceasefire deal in the central town of Guri’el on Thursday.
As if you'd find that on a map...
Defence Minister Gen. Abdulkadir Sheikh Ali Diini and Ahlu Sunna head Sheikh Mohamed Shakir clinched the deal, bringing a month-long sporadic clashes over the control of the strategic town to an end. The two sides agreed to the stationing of government troops in Galgadud regional capital of Dhusamareb and Ahlu Sunna militias to remain in Guri’il bases.

Former Galmudug leader and traditional leaders have been spearheading efforts to de-escalate armed tensions. The formation of federal state consisting of South Mudug and Galgadud has been a bone of contention for struggles for regional influence.

The jets hit an open area near the runway at Maitiga airport but caused no major damage and the airport was operating normally, a security source at the airport said. The government did not immediately confirm the attack. Libya has two rival governments with armed forces battling for control. Delegates from the two factions are holding UN-backed peace talks in Morocco on Thursday to try to resolve the crisis.

Benghazi suicide bombers mess up: report
[Libya Herald] A double suicide kaboom at a military checkpoint near Benghazi port appears to have misfired with both bombers dying without inflicting any casualties

The attackers were in a car that approached the army position at Suq Al-Hout. It seems that the marines manning the barrier became suspicious and opened fire when the vehicle refused to halt.. One occupant leapt out and went kaboom!. The other died in the vehicle.

A marine insisted afterwards that reports that two other people had been injured were wrong.

A naval officer told the Libya Herald: "We think that this attack was designed to blow a path to allow the escape of Ansar al-Sharia
...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Libyaand Yemen, with the Libyan versions currently most active. Tunisia's Shabaab al-Tawhid started out an Ansar al-Sharia and changed its name in early 2014. It still uses the old name now and then, probably because the stationery's not all used up and the web site hasn't expired yet...

hard boyz at dawn on Tuesday in a remote village of Nigeria's northeastern Borno state, sources from the military and authorised vigilante groups told Rooters.

The forces of Evil started shooting into houses in Njaba at about 5:30 a.m. (0430 GMT), a military source in Maiduguri said on Thursday. The village is close to the town of Damboa and about 100 km (60 miles) south of state capital Maiduguri.

"The attack was not immediately known because the village is very remote and our men couldn't access the area," the source said.

Boko Haram's six-year insurgency to carve out an Islamic state in the northeast of Nigeria has killed thousands and displaced over 1.5 million people.

The group seized territory the size of Belgium last year, which Nigeria's ill-equipped army has struggled to take back.

Kidnapped Iranian Diplomat Rescued in Yemen
[AnNahar] Iranian diplomat kidnapped in Yemen and held hostage for nearly two years has been rescued in a military operation and returned to Tehran on Thursday, official media reported.

Nour-Ahmad Nikbakht was seized in July 2013 while leaving his home in Sanaa by gunnies suspected of being members of al-Qaeda.

Iranian state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
broadcast images Thursday of the diplomat arriving at Mehrabad airport in Tehran.

"I was kidnapped by unknown gunnies and snuffies as I left my home to go to work," Nikbakht said.

He said "many efforts were made by soldiers from (Iran's secret services), the intelligence ministry and the foreign ministry" to secure his release.

Nikbakht was held by suspected al-Qaeda bandidos gunnies in a remote area between the southern provinces of Shabwa and Baida, tribal and Yemeni security sources said.

"I was in an extremely difficult situation and I did not know what was happening in the outside world," he told state media.

Intelligence minister Mahmoud Alavi said the operation to free Nikbakht was executed "with the fewest possible casualties".

Tehran had "refused the conditions set by the terrorists" for the diplomat's release, Alavi was quoted as saying by the official IRNA news agency.

Deputy foreign minister Hussein Amir-Abdollahian added that Nikbakht was rescued by a military intelligence unit "after a series of complicated operations in a difficult area in Yemen".

In January last year, another Iranian diplomat, Ali Asghar Assadi, was rubbed out in an attack in a neighbourhood in Sanaa housing several foreign embassies.

Nikbakht's release came less than a week after Saudi diplomat Abdullah al-Khalidi was freed and returned home after spending close to three years in al-Qaeda's captivity.

Yemen, a key front line in the U.S. war against al-Qaeda, has been gripped by unrest since longtime president President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh

stepped down in early 2012 after a bloody year-long popular uprising.

Violence has increased since a Shiite militia known as the Huthis swept into the capital last September.

The Huthis, who occupied the seats of power in February in what critics branded an attempted coup, are accused of receiving backing from Shiite-dominated Iran.

A number of foreigners have been taken hostage in Yemen in recent years.

British Teacher Jailed for Trying to Join IS
[AnNahar] A chemistry teacher was tossed in the clink

...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. jihadists fighting in Syria, against the wishes of his family who desperately tried to stop him.

Jamshed Javeed, 30, one of a group of radicalized Moslems from Manchester in northwest England, was incarcerated
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
in December 2013 as he was about to travel to the Middle East -- after helping his younger brother and three others make the same trip.

At the high-security Woolwich Crown Court in southeast London, judge Michael Topolski said Javeed was "adherent to a violent jihadist mindset" and should be considered "dangerous."

The teacher pleaded guilty in October to two counts of engaging in conduct in preparation of terrorist acts, but insisted he was not an Lion of Islam and had never supported the aims of IS "as now revealed and understood," the court heard.

But Topolski told Javeed he was "not satisfied that you reject its ultimate aims."

The judge said: "You had become sufficiently radicalized and committed to a violent jihadist ideology that you were part of a group of young men determined to travel to Syria to join ISIS (Islamic State) and to fight and die for them."

He said Javeed ignored the pleas of his wife and family and persisted even after they had hidden his passport and his equipment such as solar chargers.

"Even the prospect of becoming a father did not deter you," said the judge.

"You were not planning to return to this country... but rather to die, if you could, as a martyr.

"Whether you believed you were fighting in a just cause is irrelevant. The law is clear: this was terrorism."

The court heard how his wife's revelation that she was pregnant with their daughter did not deter Javeed.

In a text message, she had said: "Jamshed, you refuse to take on board anyone's opinion unless I've got a gun and I'm in Syria."

Police praised his family's "brave steps" in trying to thwart his plans.

Javeed was among a group of young Moslem men from Manchester who became radicalized in 2013.

His brother and two of the three other men he helped go to the Middle East have not been heard of since. The other one is confirmed dead.

Six Azerbaijanis arrested on terror charges
Officials from the Azerbaijan's Ministry of National Security detained six local people who, according to the agency, planned to commit acts of terror.

According to Caucasian Knot Niyameddin Khalilov, Rufis Baimov, Rashad Hashimli, Ilgar Musayev, Anar Rzayev and Jeykhun Abdullayev were detained in an anti-terrorism operation conducted by the Ministry of National Security.

Azerbaijani information agency APA reports that weapons and ammunition were found under the control of group members who had tried "to create a Sharia state in Azerbaijan" and commit acts of terror. The APA reported that in November 2014 the above-mentioned people, and others, appointed an 'emir' for themselves.

Meanwhile, a trial against Azerbaijani citizen Elkhan Mustafayev, who is suspected of taking part in the jihad in Syria, began at Baku's Court of Grave Crimes. At the same court, legal proceedings finished on a criminal case related to an armed incident between the members of radical currents Khawarij and Salafi on 11 December 11, 2013 in the town of Sumgait.

The incident took place at teahouse Soltan in the 10th microdistrict of Sumgait. The dispute, which had begun between the two groups of radicals as a result of the divergences of religious views, turned into an armed incident. Khawarij emir Elchin Akberov, nicknamed "Mamed", and Salafi leader Elshan Musayev, nicknamed "Hamza" were among those detained.

U.S. man charged with trying to join ISIS
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, man who tried to travel to Syria last year has been charged with attempting to join the bully boy group ISIS, U.S. prosecutors announced Wednesday.

Saudi Arabia Tells Kerry Iran is Taking Control of the Region as Hundreds of Iranian Fighters Enter Iraq
[Algemeiner] Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister, Saud Al-Faisal, told Secretary of State John Kerry in a joint press conference on Thursday that Saudi Arabia is worried about Iran's regional expansionism and nuclear weapons, pan-Arab newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat reported.
Photo at right is Iranian Major General Qasem Soleimani.
Al-Faisal said that his country, "supports the P5+1 in pursuing a strict regime of inspections which ensures that Iran will not pursue or possess nuclear weapons, meanwhile ensuring its right, and that of all countries in the region, to use nuclear energy peacefully according to IAEA's requirements and under its supervision, and in connection to that Iran is now taking over Iraq."

Obviously Saud Al-Faisal has failed to realize that an Iranian takeover and regional hegemony is the desired Obama administration end-state.

#3  Is that part of the Obama-Kerry-Iran deal? Iran gets Iraq for suppressing ISIS in exchange for a 10 year moratorium on nuke development? Since Iran can't be trusted in any deal, they get Iraq for nada. If true, it is a despicable deal. We lost 2000+ of our military to Iranian-supplied IEDs in Iraq. I don't think Iran is so much suppressing ISJV as consolidating its gains. If I'm reading it right Barry needs ISJV as a pin vs. Assad and Sissi as well as Iran. I also have the feeling an agreement was struck with Turkey, whatever that may be. Kurdistan needs to get organized quick. I also feel that by default Barry does not like Abdullah. Arab Spring, catch the scent.

group snuffies in the country's north set oil wells ablaze in an attempt to foil government forces battling to reclaim territory.

A bomb destroyed an outdoor market in the Baghdad suburb of Nahrawan, killing three civilians and wounding 12, a police officer said. Another bomb targeted a military patrol in the northeastern district of Rashdiya, killing three soldiers and wounding seven, he added.

Mortar shells hit a residential area in the southern district of Dora, killing two civilians and wounding six, another officer said. An kaboom in a market in Mahmoudiyah, 30 kilometers (20 miles) south of Baghdad, killed three civilians and maimed seven.

Medical officials confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to talk to news hounds.

The attacks come as government forces, Iranian-backed Shiite militias and Sunni volunteers continued their fight to recapture key areas around Saddam Hussein's hometown, Tikrit, which fell to Islamic State snuffies in June.

On Thursday, snuffies set fire to some oil wells outside the city, an oil official said on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to release information. The smoky fires were apparently meant to obscure targets from government bombing runs, part of the wide-scale operation that began Monday.

Ajeel oil field, about 35 kilometers (22 miles) northeast of Tikrit, was one of at least four fields seized by the snuffies as a source of crude oil to sell to smugglers to finance their operations.

Gen. Abdul-Wahab al-Saadi, in charge of recapturing Tikrit and surrounding areas, told state TV the burning oil wells "will not affect us." He said operations were continuing as planned, without elaborating.

Syria Says Top Nusra Leaders Killed in Idlib Strike

The military commander of al-Nusra Front in the Syrian province of Idlib was killed Thursday in an operation by the Syrian army, state-run news agency SANA said.

The agency said Abu Hammam al-Shami was slain during a military operation that targeted a Nusra meeting in the village of Habeet, in the northern Idlib province.

It did not elaborate, but the report suggested he was killed in an airstrike.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed that a Nusra Front leadership meeting was targeted in Idlib, which left a number of prominent leaders dead, including Abu Hammam.

It said it was not clear whether the meeting was targeted by a U.S.-led coalition airstrike or a Syrian army strike, noting that “there are conflicting reports about the fate of al-Nusra Front chief Abu Mohammed al-Golani after reports said he was present in the targeted location.”

Pro-Damascus al-Mayadeen television also cited “unconfirmed reports” as saying that al-Golani was wounded in “a Syrian airstrike on the Front's headquarters in Idlib's countryside.”

Regime barrel bomb in Aleppo kills 18

In the northern province of Idlib, seven non-combatants were killed in a regime air strike near a school, Rami Abdel Rahman, the head of the Britannia-based Observatory, said. The deaths came after UN envoy Staffan de Mistura dispatched a delegation to Aleppo in efforts to freeze fighting there.

Front, including its general military commander Abu Humam al-Shami, have been killed in an kaboom in the northwest province of Idlib on Thursday, Al Arabiya News Channel reported.

Al-Shami is one of the most senior Nusra Front figures to be killed since it formed in 2012 and has fought in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, Rooters news agency reported, quoting sources said.

Reports said the kaboom was caused by a coalition Arclight airstrike that hit a high-level Nusra Front meeting in Idlib, but the coalition has denied having conducted any Arclight airstrikes in the province in the past 24 hours.

The Nusra Front has fought Western-backed rebels this year, seizing their territory and forcing them to disarm so as to

of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

The state-run National News Agency reported that Syrian national Hussein Ghurelli, who is linked to ISIL in the Syrian Qalamoun, was detained in a hospital in the Bekaa.

The name of the hospital was not revealed.

Ghurelli, according to NNA, was being treated for an injury he sustained in his head during last week's festivities in the northeastern border town of Ras Baalbek.

He also reportedly took part in the battles against the army in town of Arsal.

Last week, the army targeted bad boy posts on the outskirts of Ras Baalbek, seizing two hilltop positions.

The army frequently clashed with the bandidos holy warriors in their hideouts near the Syria border, targeting gunnies to prevent them from advancing.

The jihadists remain entrenched on the outskirts of Arsal on the porous Syrian-Lebanese border.

The mountainous area along the Lebanese-Syrian border has long been a smuggling haven, with multiple routes into Syria that have been used to transport weapons and fighters.

Unrest Shakes Aleppo as Rebels Say Ceasefire Plan 'Dead End'
[AnNahar] Heavy festivities and a regime barrel kaboom shook the Syrian city of Aleppo Thursday after rebels tried to seize an intelligence headquarters in a forceful rejection of U.N. ceasefire efforts.

The fresh violence came during a visit to Aleppo by a delegation sent by U.N. envoy Staffan de Mistura, who is seeking to "freeze" fighting in the devastated northern city.

Wednesday's attack on the air force intelligence offices, which left at least 20 members of regime security forces and 14 rebels dead, was the worst unrest in Aleppo since the opposition rejected the peace plan on Sunday.

ISIS bulldozes ancient Assyrian city of Nimrud in Iraq

of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) group began bulldozing the ancient Assyrian city of Nimrud in Iraq on Thursday, the government said, in the jihadists' latest attack on the country's historical heritage.

ISIS "assaulted the historic city of Nimrud and bulldozed it with heavy vehicles," the tourism and antiquities ministry said on an official Facebook page.

An Iraqi antiquities official confirmed the news, saying the destruction began after noon prayers on Thursday and that trucks that may have been used to haul away artefacts had also been spotted at the site.

"Until now, we do not know to what extent it was destroyed," the official said on condition of anonymity.

Nimrud, which was founded in the 13th century BC, lies on the Tigris around 30 kilometres (18 miles) southeast of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, Iraq's second city and the main hub of IS in the country.

The destruction at Nimrud, one of the jewels of the Assyrian era, came a week after the jihadist group released a video showing snuffies armed with sledgehammersand jackhammers smashing priceless ancient artefacts at the Mosul museum.

That attack sparked widespread consternation and alarm, with some archaeologists and heritage experts comparing it to the 2001 demolition of the Bamiyan
...a place in Afghanistan that used to have some historically interesting statues of the Buddha carved into a mountainside. Then the holy men showed up and now all they have is some big holes...
Buddhas in Afghanistan by the Taliban.

In the jihadists' extreme interpretation of Islam, statues, idols and shrines are a corruption of the purity of the early Moslem faith and amount to recognising other objects of worship than God.

The group spearheaded a sweeping offensive last June that overran Nineveh province, where Mosul and Nimrud are located, and swept through much of Iraq's Sunni Arab heartland.

Iraqi security forces and allied fighters are battling to regain ground from the jihadists with backing from an international anti-ISIS coalition as well as neighbouring Iran.

But major operations to drive ISIS out of Nineveh are likely months away, leaving the province's irreplaceable historical sites at the mercy of snuffies who have no regard for Iraq's past.

Archeological site of Sheran, another victim of Islamic State
[ARA] The Kurdish-populated village of Sheran (Arslan Tash) in the eastern countryside of Kobane has paid a big price for months of battles with holy warriors of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group (IS/ISIS), who had taken the village as a military base for their operations against the Kurdish forces. The historic village, which contains dozens of ancient monuments, has been under control of the Islamic State since Sept. 2014, until its liberation by the Kurdish forces last February.

Some of the ancient ruins and monuments were destroyed under the blows of the U.S.-led coalition's Arclight airstrikes; while others were deliberately destroyed by IS turbans, who were stationed there. Some of these archeological sites date back thousands of years, such as ruins of the Assyrian city of Hedato.

According to the Kurdish researcher and historian Mohsin Seida, the Syrian regime and IS holy warriors has destroyed a large amount of the historic ruins and monuments in Sheran.

"Unfortunately, since the start of the Syrian uprising in 2011, many archeological sites have been exposed to destruction by pro-Assad forces and holy warriors of the Islamic State," Seida told ARA News.

"Sheran's historic monuments and other archeological locations in Syria have avoided destruction throughout history. Ironically, this four-year-conflict was the most destructive."

"We appeal to all the international organizations to bear responsibility of protecting the human heritage in Syria," he added.

The Kurdish historian added: "The archaeological sites in Sheran are among the most important locations in the third millennium BC, and the importance of this historic area in Syria's history stems from its association with the Assyrian name of the city (Arslan Tash) on behalf of the Assyrian emperor Tiglath Pileser III, who built a royal palace in the city."

"Subsequent to the fall of the Assyrian Empire, the city lost its importance, while recovered relative prosperity in the Greek period. During excavations in 1928, remnants of a Greek palace were found on the ruins of the Assyrian royal palace where Arslan Tash was the military capital of a province in the empire," Sieda added.

The Kurdish researcher went further to shed light on the significance of Sheran site, saying: "We should mention those voyagers and archaeologists who visited the site and wrote their observations about it. Among others, Sheran was a destination to the British archeologist Francis Chesney, who visited the site in 1835, and the Ottoman artist and director of Istanbul Museum, Hamdi Bey, as well as the German archaeologists Max Oppenheim, French Prospector and Danjan Toro, who excavated the site in 1928."

Noteworthy, holy warriors of the Islamic State blew major monuments in Sheran area before withdrawal last month, while several other sites in the area were subjected to sabotage amid the daily fighting and shelling over the last five months.
