has claimed credit for a Monday suicide kaboom on a U.S. base in Afghanistan that was once the site of one of the deadliest attacks on CIA personnel in the agency's history.

The bomber blew up an explosive-packed vehicle at Camp Chapman in Khost Province. There are no reports of U.S. casualties, but there were casualties amond the Afghan troops guarding the base. The attack came as U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis was visiting the Afghan capital of Kabul.

In 2009, when the facility was known as Forward Operating Base Chapman, a Jordanian doctor was brought to the camp to deliver valuable information about al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawhari. He was not searched on arrival, and detonated a boom jacket in the middle of the CIA personnel gathered to greet him. He killed seven CIA officers and contractors, a Jordanian intelligence agent and an Afghan CIA employee. Six other CIA officers and contractors were maimed.

The camp is in territory dominated by a Taliban faction known as the Haqqani Network. It has been attacked by jacket wallahs several times since 2009, including in 2012 and 2015. The 2015 attack, at a checkpoint near the main gate, killed 33 people.

At least a quarter are backed by groups propagating arch conservative strains of Islam like Salafism, or organizations that see religion not just as a private matter but integral to politics and society, Aslan believes.

Mosul Offensive News

ISIS Big Turban 6 others die in western Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Federal Police have announced killing of seven Islamic State foreign members, including the group’s military planning official in western Mosul.

“Police troops killed seven IS foreign militants, including abu Yassin al-Rousi, the group’s official of military planning, in western Mosul,” Lt.Gen.Shaker Jawdat, Federal Police chief, said in statements on Monday.

In related news, Jawdat indicated “opening passageways after clearing them of landmines and explosives to allow passage of civilians out of the Old City.”

Speaking BasNews, Lt. Gen. Ali Mohsen said the militants included three suicide bombers and that they were killed on al-Farouq and al-Meshahda disricts, south of Mosul.

Five civilians were arrested over collaboration with the militants, he added.

On Sunday, the pro-Iraqi government troops of al-Hashd al-Shaabi declared killing IS leader abu Omar al-Aafri in Tal Afar town. Previously on the day, Kurdistan Region’s Directorate of Counter-Terrorism (CTD) said IS’s education department official Ali Reda Mahmoud was killed on Saturday in an airstrike by the international coalition jets in Tal Afar town, western Mosul.

The group has sustained severe losses in personnel and ground since an offensive was launched in mid October to retake Mosul, the second-largest Iraqi city and the militants’ last urban stronghold in the country.

The U.S.-led coalition had estimated the number of remaining IS militants in Mosul by less than 1000.

A major offensive was launched in February by Iraqi troops, backed by the international coalition and paramilitary troops, to retake western Mosul from IS. Eastern Mosul was recaptured in January after three months of battles.

ISIS mullah turns into a fine, red mist in airstrike in Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) An Islamic State member in charge of psychological guidance for the group’s fighters was killed Monday along with ten others in an airstrike in western Mosul, according to an air force officer.

Anadolu Agency quoted Lit. Maan Abdullah saying that Ihsan Mulla Khaldoun a-Dawod, Islamic State’s so-called “guidance and psychological mobilization” official, was killed while holding a meeting in Zanjili district, in western Mosul.

Iraqi government forces, backed by a U.S.-led coalition and paramilitary troops, took over eastern Mosul in January after three months of battles. Another offensive launched in mid February to retake the western side of the city.

The U.S. State Department said last week Iraqi troops were in control over 4000 kilometers of the city.

Coalition officials had estimated the number of remaining IS militants in Mosul by less than 1000. The group has lost dozens of its foreign and local leaders since the start of western Mosul operations.

The conflict in Mosul has so far displaced more than half a million civilians, according to the United Nations and the Iraqi government.

Baghdad Bomb and Bullet Bulletin

Roadside bomb wounds 2 in Gisr Diyala region

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Two persons were injured due to blast that occurred near a market in northern Baghdad, security source said on Monday.

“A roadside bomb placed near a market on Taji district left two persons injured,” the source told Al-Ghad Press.

On Sunday, three other persons were wounded as an IED exploded in Gisr Diyala region, southeastern Baghdad.

Violence in the country left 1115 casualties, excluding security members, during March, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) said. Baghdad was the second most affected province with 84 deaths and 246 injuries, according to the organization’s monthly casualty count.

Islamic State militants said they had been behind some bloody explosions and attacks that hit the capital in the past months, leaving casualties among civilians and security troops. However, several blasts are not followed by a claim of responsibility.

Islamic State is believed to have begun escalating attacks outside the city of Mosul, where the group has been losing ground and personnel since October, so as to relieve pressure by government forces on that front and to divert attention from group losses.

Moreover, observers argue that attacks outside the city prove that the extremist group can still pose a security threat for all cities.

3 Iraqi kops wounded in bomb attack in Abu Gharib

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) A police source revealed that three policemen were injured in a bomb blast that targeted their patrol, west of Baghdad, Alsumaria News reported on Monday.

The source said that an improvised explosive device exploded, at noon today, near a police patrol in al-Haswa area in Abu Gharib District, west of Baghdad, wounding three policemen.

Security forces cordoned off the area of incident, and transferred the wounded to a nearby hospital to receive the needed treatment, the source added on condition of anonymity.

Iraqi militias kill 3 ISIS Turbans near al-Okashat region

Anbar (IraqiNews.com) Paramilitary forces killed three Islamic State members during an overnight offensive in the western area of Anbar as preparations continue for an operation against the group’s havens in the province.

Al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units) said through its media on Monday that the troops killed three Islamic State militants during an encounter at al-Okashat region.

Those killed included two Syrian nationals: Omar (Abu Khattab) al-Yasouf and Abbas (Abu Hamza) Moussa.

The operation comes as preparations proceed for an offensive targeting IS havens in western Anbar held since the group emerged in 2014.

Ghassan al-Eithawi, a spokesperson for tribal groups fighting the Islamic State in Anbar, was quoted saying that tribal forces were building up for an operation targeting IS strongholds in the towns of Annah, Rawa and Qaim.

Iraqi and U.S.-led coalition fighter jets have regularly pounded those locations, killing dozens of militants. It is widely expected that the Iraqi government will launch a major security offensive in Anbar once it is done with the campaign to drive out IS from Mosul, the group’s principal stronghold in Iraq.

Islamic State members reportedly killed and wounded 30 Iraqi security members in an ambush near al-Rutba region, west of Anbar, on Sunday.

Iraqi militias break even in combat casualties with ISIS troops with 2 dead

Rutba (IraqiNews.com) Sunni tribal forces fighting the Islamic State said Monday they killed two group members while losing two of their members in western Anbar on Monday.

Shaker al-Rishawi, a senior commander of the Tribal Mobilization forces in Anbar, said two tribal fighters and two Islamic State militants died, while two militants of Arab nationalities were arrested during an encounter at the “25th kilometer” region, west of the Rutba region, west of Anbar.

Iraqi and U.S.-led coalition fighter jets have regularly pounded locations held by the Islamic State at the stronghold towns of Annah, Qaim and Rawa, killing dozens of militants. Thousands of civilians are thought to be held in Islamic State captivity at those locations. It is widely expected that the Iraqi government will launch a major security offensive in Anbar once it is done with the campaign to drive out IS from Mosul, the group’s principal stronghold in Iraq.

Al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units) said through its media earlier on Monday that the troops killed three Islamic State militants during an encounter at al-Okashat region. Those killed included two Syrian nationals, according to PMU media.

10 Iraqi soldiers die in convoy ambush

BAGHDAD: Militants in Iraq ambushed a convoy of off-duty soldiers near a town in the country’s sprawling western desert, killing at least 10 and wounding 20, officials said on Monday.

Iraqi Maj. Emad Al-Dulaimi said the attack took place the night before near the town of Rutba. The militants were armed with assault rifles and rockets. Al-Dulaimi said he blamed Daesh.

Daesh later in the day took responsibility for the attack. A statement on the Daesh-affiliated Aamaq news agency claimed 18 were killed in the ambush, including two officers.

Daesh has carried out many similar attacks targeting Iraqi forces in the past months to detract from the ongoing battle between Iraqi forces and Daesh militants in Mosul.

Rutba lies about 390 kilometers west of Baghdad in the country’s vast Anbar province. It’s the last sizable town on the way to the border with Jordan.

Iraqi forces launched a wide-scale military operation last October to retake Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city from Daesh militants. The eastern half of the city, separated in two by the Tigris River, was declared completely free of IS in January and now Iraqi forces are fighting to rout IS from all of the western, more densely populated half of the city.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said last week that 493,000 people have been displaced from the city and that as many as 500,000 others remain in IS-controlled parts of western Mosul.

Diyala kops destroy ISIS hideout in al-Wajihiyah
Diyala (IraqiNews.com) Diyala Police Command announced, on Monday, arresting a terrorist, in addition to destroying a hideout belonging to the Islamic State during two raids in different areas of the province.

The command said in a statement that forces from al-Wajihiyah area police department, backed by the Intelligence Office, arrested a wanted man on charges of terrorism, in the outskirts of the area.

Intelligence information also indicated to the presence of a hideout belonging to the Islamic State in al-Hamed Village in the outskirts of Balad Ruz District, the statement added. Joint forces from Balad Ruz Police and Diyala emergency regiment destroyed this hideout, which contained three plastic barrels, 10 blankets and food materials.

Noteworthy, security forces in Diyala managed to arrest several wanted people, and seized a large number of the Islamic State’s hideouts in the province, during the previous months.

Salahuddin Kombat Kronicle
Iranian militias kills 4 ISIS Bad Guys in Salahuddin

Salahuddin (IraqiNews.com) Paramilitary troops have killed four suicide bombers as their infiltration attempt in north of Salahuddin province was foiled on Monday.

“Troops of the 29th brigade were able to besiege and kill four Islamic State suicide bombers near Baiji city, north of Salahuddin,” the media service of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Public Mobilization Units) said.

“The attackers were attempting to sneak into Baiji to target the military units there,” it added.

On Sunday, the pro-government troops killed two IS militants after targeting their havens in Makhoul mountains, north of the province.

Salahuddin has witnessed an escalation in IS attacks on deployments by Iraqi government forces and PMUs over the past months as Iraqi government forces continue to make gains in Mosul, the group’s largest stronghold in Iraq, since a security campaign launched in October to retake the city.

Observers believe IS attacks outside Mosul seek distracting security attention from Mosul and to make up for losses.

IS militants still pose a security threat in Salahuddin though security forces had recaptured large areas of the province since the group emerged in 2014 to proclaim an “Islamic Caliphate”.

PMUs are considered one of the largest militias in Iraq. It was established in 2014 by a fatwa (religious edict) to fight the Islamic State. In late 2016, the Iraqi parliament recognized the militia as a national armed force.

Samarra Militia group disatches suicide bomber to his Great Reward

Salahuddin (IraqiNews.com) Pro-Iraqi government paramilitary troops have killed a suicide attacker inside a house south of Samarra, in Salahuddin province, a security source said on Monday.

“The 313 brigade of al-Hashd al-Shaabi [Public Mobilization Units] troops besieged on Monday a bomber, vested with a suicide belt, inside a house in al-Ishaqi district, south of Samarra,” the source told AlSumaria News.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source said “troops killed the attacker after exchanging fire with him.”

Earlier on Sunday, the troops killed four suicide bombers as they attempted infiltration near Baiji city, northern Salahuddin.

The province has witnessed an escalation in IS attacks on troops deployed by Iraqi government forces and PMUs over the past months as Iraqi government forces continue to make gains in Mosul, the group’s largest stronghold in Iraq, since a security campaign launched in October to retake the city.

IS militants still pose a security threat in Salahuddin though security forces had recaptured large areas of the province since the group emerged in 2014 to proclaim an “Islamic Caliphate”.

PMUs have actively engaged with government forces in securing recaptured areas and searching for dormant IS cells in Salahuddin and other provinces.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Soldier stabbed at Qalandiya checkpoint; assailant neutralized
A tale to wring tears from a stone -- and then she failed to get herself killed, poor dear.
[Ynet] Security forces neutralize a female attacker who approached the checkpoint north of Jerusalem before removing a concealed blade and stabbing a soldier; soldier lightly maimed in the upper body and evacuated to hospital for treatment.

A female soldier was stabbed at the Qalandiya checkpoint Monday morning, north of Jerusalem.

The female assailant was neutralized at the scene, while the soldier--an NCO in the Civil Administration--was lightly maimed in the upper body.

The woman who carried out the stabbing attack was identified as Asya Kabaneh, 41, from the village of Duma in the Nablus area.

Asya, who is a married mother of 9, said during investigation that for a long time she has been in conflict with her husband, who threatened to deport her to her family in Jordan.

The investigation also revealed that she had fought with her husband last night over the education of their children and as a result, she decided to carry out an attack in order for the security forces to shoot her because--in her words--she was fed up with her life.

Police report that the attacker arrived at the checkpoint and approached security forces, claiming she wanted to ask a question. At that point, she apparently pulled out a knife that was concealed in her bag and stabbed the soldier.

Police and security guards on the scene then neutralized her. The injured soldier was treated lightly by MDA and evacuated to the hospital.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syrian rebels enter Taqba
[ArabNews] BEIRUT: A US-backed alliance of Arab-Kurdish forces entered the key jihadist-held town of Tabqa on Monday as they pursued their campaign against the Daesh group in northern Syria.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have set their sights on Tabqa and the adjacent dam as part of their broader offensive for the city of Raqqa, the Syrian heart of the jihadists’ self-styled “caliphate” since 2014.

Supported by US-led coalition air strikes and special forces advisers, the SDF surrounded Tabqa in early April.

On Monday, they entered it for the first time, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said.

“They seized control of several points in the town’s south and were advancing on its western edges,” said Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman.

He said US-led coalition warplanes were carrying out “intense” strikes in support of the offensive, but that one raid had killed three women and five children trying to flee Tabqa.

“One raid killed eight civilians from a single family, including five children, who were trying to escape in their car via the town’s southwest,” Abdel Rahman said.

In an online statement, the SDF said it had captured IS-held positions in west Tabqa, including a roundabout, and part of a southern district.

“There are now clearing operations in the liberated positions,” the SDF said.

Tabqa sits on a key supply route about 55 kilometers (34 miles) west of Raqqa, and served as an important IS command base, housing the group’s main prison.

According to the Syrian Economic Task Force, a Dubai-based think tank, Tabqa is home to 85,000 people including IS fighters from other areas.

The assault on Tabqa began in late March when SDF forces and their US-led coalition allies were airlifted behind IS lines.

The ensuing fight has been intense, with IS dispatching suicide bombers daily to try to slow the offensive and coalition warplanes intensifying their raids.

“The real battle begins now,” Abdel Rahman said on Monday, adding that IS fighters had “no way” out of the town.

For months, the SDF has been advancing on Raqqa, hoping to encircle it before a final attack.

The city was home to around 240,000 residents before 2011, and more than 80,000 people have fled to it from other parts of the country.

Syria’s war has left more than 320,000 people dead since it began with protests in 2011 that were brutally repressed by the government of President Bashar Assad.

Regional and international powers have since been drawn into the complex conflict, in which internationally prohibited weapons such as cluster bombs and toxic gas have been used.

On April 4, a suspected chemical attack killed 87 civilians, including many children, in the northwestern rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhun.

Much of the international community blamed the Syrian regime, and three days later 59 US cruise missiles targeted the airbase from where the attack was launched.

Assad ally Moscow protested the US action and consistently sought to deflect blame from Damascus over the incident.

Air raids on Khan Sheikhun have continued, with seven people killed in strikes on the town market on Monday, the Observatory said.

It came as Russia’s defense ministry said the Syrian army would halt fire around Khan Sheikhun if experts were allowed in to conduct a probe.

The ministry said Damascus was “ready to declare a complete moratorium on the activities of its troops, aviation and artillery in the area” if investigators were sent in.

Syria’s government has not commented on the offer.

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) said last week that “incontrovertible” test results showed sarin gas or a similar substance had been used in Khan Sheikhun.

The Lebanese group would score a direct hit on an Islamic State command center in Ras Ba’albak on Monday, killing and wounding several turbans in the process of their attack.

Hezbollah turned the tables on the Islamic State this week after the latter launched a powerful offensive in Ras Ba’albak over the weekend.

The Islamic State has occupied several parts of Ras Ba’albak in eastern Leb for nearly two years now; they continue to operate in this region, despite ongoing attacks from Hezbollah and Lebanese Army.

ISIS executes 25 in Kirkuk

Kirkuk (IraqiNews.com) Islamic State militants have executed group of civilians in al-Hawija district over attempting to flee ‘the land of caliphate’, officials said.

“Information from our sources in Hawija showed that the executed people earlier helped their families escape to the liberated regions,” Ahmed Khurshid, spokesperson of Hawija tribal mobilization troops, told Kirkuk Now website. The victims were held by IS as they tried to join their families at the freed regions

Meanwhile, Sheikh Marzouq al-Nae’my, head of al-Nae’m tribe, said, “IS executed 25 persons, however, we expect a higher figure as some people are still missing.”

“We were informed through our sources that a massacre was committed by IS,” the tribesman said, adding that the massacre “will not be the last one.”

Dozens of residents from Hawija and the regions in its vicinity escape to Kirkuk province on a daily basis. Despite the risky routes to the freed regions, the civilians prefer death to staying under IS control.

Hawija, located 55 KM west of Kirkuk, has been held by IS since mid-2014.

The Iraqi government is expected to launch an offensive to retake IS-occupied areas in Kirkuk once it is done with eradicating IS from Mosul, the group’s biggest bastion in Iraq.

ISIS executes its own in Raqqa

Baghdad (BasNews) The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), backed by the international coalition, revealed on Sunday that they have received intelligence information indicating that the Islamic State (IS) has began to execute its foreign elements.

Intelligence sources say that local militants do not trust the foreign ones, accusing them of spying for the international coalition and the SDF which has closed in on the group’s stronghold of Raqqa and controlled all roads leading to the city.

The IS organization therefore has recently executed a large number of its foreign militants including leaders, according to the SDF.

These intra-IS tensions suggest that the organization is on the verge of defeat, particularly after the SDF managed to isolate Raqqa and began preparations to storm it.

Iraqi forces liberate kidz in western Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Security troops have freed several children who were held by Islamic State in west of Mosul. One of the children was found dead due to being tortured by the militants, a security source from Nineveh province said.

“Security forces liberated a group of children who were detained by IS in al-Zanjili district, in western Mosul,” the source told AlSumaria News on Monday.

“The troops were able to save three of the children after one of them succumbed to death due to being tortured by the militants,” the source added.

“Preliminary investigations with the children showed that they were held by IS members for disobeying orders made by the group,” according to the source.

Last month, Iraqi Observatory for Human Rights reported said 197 children were taken hostage by the IS militants near al-Nouri Grand Mosque in west Mosul where the Iraqi troops have closed in on the militant group.

Islamic State has executed hundreds of civilians and security members since it took over large areas in Iraq to proclaim a self-styled “Islamic Caliphate” in 2014.

A major offensive was launched by Iraqi government forces, backed by international coalition troops led by the United States, in October to retake Mosul, IS’s largest base in Iraq. The eastern side was retaken in January, while another offensive was launched in February to recapture the west.
