Afghanistan
Seven Aid Workers Among The Dead In Hotel Attack
[Tolo News] Amnesia Amnesty International has strongly condemned the Taliban attack on the Park Palace Hotel in Kabul in which 14 people died -- including seven aid workers.

In a statement issued by the organization, Horia Mosadiq, Afghanistan Researcher at Amnesia Amnesty International, said: "This atrocious attack on a well-known hotel in central Kabul is a worrying sign that the Taliban's spring offensive is in full swing, putting civilians at heightened risk of death and injury."

"There has been a worrying spike in assaults carried out by the Taliban and other gangs on 'soft targets' across Afghanistan in recent weeks -- of which this is just the latest attack -- resulting in a high civilian corpse count. Some of these attacks could amount to crimes against humanity or war crimes and the authorities must ensure full investigations with those suspected of criminal responsibility brought to trial."

What was of particular concern to the organization was that seven of the 14 killed were aid workers.

"Reports that several aid workers were among those killed are especially worrying -- the Taliban are again targeting the very individuals and agencies who are committed to help ordinary Afghan people," said Mosadiq.

The United Nations
...where theory meets practice and practice loses...
Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) also condemned the attack and said such "deliberate attacks on civilians are atrocities".

"With this years' appalling rise in civilian casualties, UNAMA again urges parties to the conflict to take all necessary measures to protect civilians in line with their obligations under international humanitarian law," said Georgette Gagnon, UNAMA's Human Rights Director.

Wednesday night's attack occurred at about 8:30 pm when an unknown number of gunnies entered the hotel and triggered a siege that lasted for about seven hours.

Fourteen people died including four Afghans, four Indians, two Paks, an Italian, a Kazakhstani and an American. The fourteenth victim's nationality was still unclear late Thursday.

In the first four months of 2015, UNAMA documented a record high number of 2,937 civilian casualties (974 civilian deaths and 1,963 injured), a 16 percent increase over the same period in 2014. The agency recently stated the Taliban and other gangs are responsible for almost three-quarters of all civilian deaths in Afghanistan.

Taliban Takeover in Jawand Raises Questions About Local Leadership
[Tolo News] Talibs have reportedly ransacked government offices and security forces facilities in Jawand district of Badghis province, seizing important documents and equipment, following their swift take-over of the district last Saturday night.

Although the gunnies were beaten back with the help of air support, the fleeing of all local government and police officials at the first sign of the Taliban's advance does not bode well for conditions in Jawand. Moreover, in their wake, the Taliban left little but destruction and disarray.

According to a TOLOnews news hound on the ground in Jawand, all government and police offices have been emptied and left abandoned. When the Taliban entered the district's abandoned Police HQ, local residents and eye-witnesses say they destroyed everything and stole eight police vehicles, as well as some heavy and light weaponry.

Meanwhile,
...back at the bunker, his Excellency called a hurried meeting of his closest advisors. It was to be his last. They discussed the officers's efficiency rating system...
local residents told TOLOnews that power-brokers in the area, who maintain close ties to both local governing officials and the Taliban, are responsible for Jawand's upheaval. They said the local leaders were in disagreement with district officials, so they encouraged and enabled the Taliban to take it over.

"There were some people who used to be with the police, commander and the district governor, and used to tell them that they were cooperating with them - this was before the Taliban attacked," Jawand resident Muhammad Qazizada said on Thursday. "When the Taliban entered the bazaar and came down from the mountains to the district, the coppers said that the people who were cooperating with them yesterday were now the enemy."

Regardless of what prompted the holy warrior advance, however, it is clear that local residents of Jawand are willing to lay down their lives in order to keep the Taliban out of their communities. Hundreds of district residents picked up arms in response to the incidents earlier in the week and vowed to fight the faceless myrmidons if they tried to seize territory again.

"The Taliban will not be able to come back to the district, and operations are underway to clear the route to the center of the district," Badghis Deputy Governor Qamruddin Shekib said on Thursday.

For their part, military officials in the area have expressed satisfaction with the way the holy warrior offensive was handled by the security forces, emphasizing the important role air-support played. "The role of our air force was very effective in this operation, and logistics had an important role as well," 207 Battalion Commander General Taj Muhammad told TOLOnews. "Our forces were transported to the area by the air force, which was very effective."

Since the Taliban advance was beaten back, additional Afghan National Army (ANA) units have been stationed in Jawand.

Seven die in attack on Afghan clerics
[DAWN] LASHKAR GAH: Gunmen opened fire on a gathering of Afghan holy mans in the southern province of Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
, killing seven people, police said on Wednesday.

The Ulema Council, the highest religious authority in the country, came under attack after it had repeatedly announced its support for security forces fighting the Taliban murderous Moslems.

"The meeting was ongoing when two Taliban gunnies attacked the gathering," police official Jan Aqa said.

Four civilians and three police personnel were killed and seven people maimed in the attack at Lashkar Gah, the bustling provincial capital.

Afghan forces rushed to the scene and killed the two gunnies in the ensuing three-hour gunbattle, security officials said.

Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, a Taliban front man, grabbed credit for the attack and said 15 officials were killed.

Numbering some 3,000 holy mans and scholars and headed by a 150-strong National Council, the powerful holy mans can sway public opinion significantly through mosques across the country.

Africa North
Four Jihadists Killed in Clashes with Tunisian Army
[AnNahar] Four jihadists were killed Thursday in festivities with the Tunisian army in a mountainous region near the border with Algeria, the defense ministry said.

A statement said troops clashed with jihadists at dawn on Mount Sammama near Mount Chaambi, where the army has been battling gunnies since 2012.

Citing what it said was an initial toll it reported "four faceless myrmidons killed and others maimed," adding that there were no military casualties.

The defense ministry said soldiers had seized electronic supplies and destroyed a vehicle during the operation.

Tunisia has seen a surge in radical Islam since veteran president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali was ousted in the 2011 revolution.

Dozens of security forces have been killed since then in jihadist attacks.

At least 12 dead after attack on Nigeria's Maiduguri city
[REUTERS] At least six civilians and six members of a youth vigilante group were killed in an attack by Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
bully boyz on Nigeria's northeastern city Maiduguri, two military sources said on Thursday.

The attack was reported late on Wednesday in Maiduguri, which is the capital of Borno state and the birthplace of the Islamist jihadi group.

One of the sources said the vigilantes in the so-called civilian joint taskforce died after they mistook exploding trollop female suicide bombers for residents fleeing the Boko Haram raid.

Boko Haram, which has killed thousands in its attempt to carve out an Islamist state in the country's northeast, is on the backfoot foot following a co-ordinated offensive by military forces from Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
However,
you can observe a lot just by watching...
Wednesday's assault shows it is still capable of pulling off bloody assaults.

Defence front man Major General Chris Olukolade said the murderous Moslems began their attack on the outskirts of Maiduguri with the detonation of two female suicide in Ladi Kayamla area.

He said the attack was likely intended as a diversion to "slow down the ongoing assault on the Sambisa forest, it was carried out by those murderous Moslems escaping from locations that have been destroyed".

Boko Haram has become scattered across Borno, but maintains a final stronghold in the Sambisa forest reserve. Nigeria began a ground assault on the area in April and said it has overrun many camps and freed over 700 kidnapped women and kiddies.

Qaida Bans Qat Sales in South Yemen City
Making friends and influencing people in the inimitable Al Qaeda way.
[AnNahar] Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula
...the latest incarnation of various Qaeda and Qaeda-allied groups, including the now-defunct Aden-Abyan Islamic Army that boomed the USS Cole in 2000...
on Thursday outlawed the mild narcotic qat widely consumed throughout Yemen, in a city under its control, a local official said.

Qat is an evergreen shrub native to the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa, and chewing its leaves and shoots as a stimulant dates back centuries.

Al-Qaeda murderous Moslems seized a large quantity of the plant that traders had hoped to sell in Mukalla in south east Yemen, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
.

On Wednesday, the group distributed leaflets in the coastal city saying that the sale and consumption of Qat would be banned from Thursday.

The mild narcotic qat, which has a stimulant effect similar to drinking numerous cups of strong coffee, is part of the social fabric of Yemen.

Coalition accuses Yemen rebels of truce violations
Sanaa -- Aid agencies began delivering help to desperate civilians in Yemen as a five-day ceasefire took hold after nearly seven weeks of Saudi-led air strikes against Iran-backed rebels.

The Saudi-led coalition on Thursday alleged that Houthi militias had violated the truce 12 times, including with artillery and rocket fire in several towns in the south, in a statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency.
Truce violations in Yemen? Whoever heard of such a thing?
But it said the coalition “confirms its full commitment to the humanitarian truce and restraint”.
They'll confine themselves to mustache-cursing...
The coalition accused the rebels and their allies of truce violations, including rocket and tank fire, and troop movements in the south of the country.

On Wednesday the Saudi defence ministry said rockets fired from the rebel-held north of Yemen had hit the border areas of Jazan and Najran inside the kingdom but Saudi forces had “practised self-restraint as part of their commitment” to the truce.
The alternative explanation is that the Saudi military couldn't get its shit together in real time to do anything about it...
The alleged violations came despite a promise by the Houthi rebels and their allies to abide by the ceasefire. Riyadh has warned it will punish any attempt to exploit the truce.

A US State Department spokesman said that while the truce was mostly peaceful “broadly” holding, it had received some reports of clashes after the ceasefire began.

As aid agencies said they were starting to deliver assistance, residents of the rebel-held capital Sanaa said the ceasefire came as a much-needed relief.

No Iran warships escorting Yemen-bound cargo ship
[REUTERS] Iran has so far refrained from deploying warships to accompany a fat merchantman that Tehran says is carrying humanitarian aid to Yemen, despite its announced plans to do so, Pentagon front man Colonel Steve Warren told a news briefing on Thursday.

Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
said on Wednesday that if Iran does not allow a fat merchantman bound for the Arabian Peninsula to be searched, then Tehran "bears complete responsibility for any incident that arises from their attempt to enter Yemeni waters."

The United States has criticized Iran's announced plans to send the ship directly to Yemen and urged Tehran to redirect the ship to Djibouti, from where the United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...
is coordinating aid distribution.

Texas Man Pledged Allegiance to ISIS Leader
A Mesquite, Texas, man who pledged allegiance to ISIS and lied to the FBI about it was arrested on Thursday, according to a criminal complaint.

Bilal
...not quite "Bill"...
Abood, 37, a licensed security guard, is charged with making a false statement to the FBI. He faces up to eight years in prison.

Abood was born in Iraq and migrated to the United States in 2009. He was a naturalized U.S. citizen, prosecutors said.
So revoke his citizenship and send him back to Iraq -- after he finishes 8 years in a Federal super-max...
Abood tried to travel to Iraq from D/FW International Airport on March 29, 2013, but was not allowed to board the flight. He was interviewed by FBI agents, claimed he was going to visit family, and denied that he planned to fight for ISIS, the complaint said.

He later admitted he planned to go to Syria to fight with the Free Syrian Army against the government, the complaint said.

The following month, he left DFW for Mexico and traveled through various countries to get to Syria. When he returned in September 2013, he admitted to FBI agents that he had stayed in a Free Syrian Army camp and fought with the group, the complaint said.
And we didn't arrest him then because...
In July 2014, the FBI obtained a search warrant to search his computer. The search found that Abood had pledged allegiance to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi on June 19, 2014 and had viewed videos of atrocities such as beheadings and had tweeted information on al-Baghdadi, prosecutors said.

In his interview with FBI agents, he denied he had pledged allegiance to ISIS, and that denial was the basis of his charge.

It was not clear why agents waited nearly a year to arrest him.
Why don't you ask them, Mr. Reporter?
Abood does not face a terrorism charge and there is no allegation he was planning any attacks in the United States.
Sift through his email and Facebook accounts...
A detention hearing is set for 9:30 am tomorrow. Abood is being held in federal custody. Attorney information for Abood was not immediately clear.

Baiji’s oil refinery could be destroyed during battle to save it

[IraqiNews.com] On Thursday, Rooters reported that ISIS Death Eaters have dug trenches around gas tanks at Baiji's oil refinery, raising the stakes in a battle where the price of victory may be the refinery itself and the Iraqi forces that are trapped inside it.

Rooters reported that 200 Iraqi security elements are trapped inside the refinery. A police source was quoted by Rooters as saying, "They have dug trenches near the hydrogen and natural gas tanks. The warplanes can not hit them because it is very dangerous and we could get killed too."

Another source said, "They are maintaining their momentum just like Kobani; they keep throwing people at the refinery. The only difference is that Kobani is a city and Baiji is an industrial facility, and it's difficult to manage a fight inside an area that is surrounded 360 degrees."

Four Die as Philippine Troops Raid Al-Qaida-Linked Bomb Factory
[AnNahar] Three Moslem Lions of Islam and a soldier were killed in the southern Philippines on Thursday when government troops raided a bomb factory of an Al-Qaeda-linked group, a military official said.

The troops encountered about 30 armed members of the Abu Sayyaf
...also known as al-Harakat al-Islamiyya, an Islamist terror group based in Jolo, Basilan and Zamboanga. Since its inception in the early 1990s, the group has carried out bombings, kidnappings, murders, head choppings, and extortion in their uniquely Islamic attempt to set up an independent Moslem province in the Philippines. Abu Sayyaf forces probably number less than 300 cadres. The group is closely allied with remnants of Indonesia's Jemaah Islamiya and has loose ties with MILF and MNLF who sometimes provide cannon fodder...

, resulting in a four-hour shootout, said Navy Captain Roy Vincent Trinidad, chief of a special security task force.

Three of the gunnies and one soldier were killed in the battle, which forced the Abu Sayyaf to retreat, leaving behind them bomb-making paraphernalia, Trinidad said.

"Various types of IEDs (improvised bombs) were recovered that were already assembled. Some were made of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) tanks, paint tins and pipe bombs," he said.

This includes the 2004 Molotov cocktailing of a ferry off Manila Bay that killed more than 100 people.

Despite receiving training assistance from the United States, the Philippines has struggled to contain the Abu Sayyaf, whose leader last year pledged allegiance to the Islamic State

Iranian boats 'fire warning shots' at Singapore-flagged ship
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces fired warning shots at a Singapore-flagged commercial ship in the Gulf on Thursday, before vessels from the United Arab Emirates came to the ship's aid, US officials said.

The Iranian patrol craft fired across the bow of the Alpine Eternity in international waters and the commercial ship then headed towards the UAE, which deployed coasties boats in response to a call for help from the vessel, two defense officials told AFP. Assad strikes on rebel villages kill 17 children
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Regime Arclight airstrikes on three adjacent rebel-held villages in northern Syria killed at least 39 civilians, 17 of them children, an activist group said Thursday.

Eight siblings were among the dead from the Wednesday strikes in southern Aleppo province, around 15 kilometers (10 miles) from the main highway south towards the capital, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Dozens of civilians were also maimed in the raids, which involved both missile strikes and barrel bombing, the Observatory added.

The Syrian government has been repeatedly condemned for its widespread use of barrel bombs, crude weapons made from oil drums, gas cylinders or water tanks, packed with explosives and scrap metal, and dropped from helicopters.

ISIL jihadists threaten Syria's ancient Palmyra

of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) jihadists battled Syrian troops near ancient Palmyra May 14, threatening the UNESCO world heritage site with destruction like that which it has already wreaked in Iraq, a monitoring group said.

After a lightning advance across the desert in which they overran government forces in ferocious fighting in which 110 combatants were killed, the jihadists were within two kilometres (a little more than a mile) of the ruins, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

"Palmyra is under threat," said Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman.

"ISIL has taken all the army posts between Al-Sukhnah and Palmyra" in its drive towards the oasis town from its stronghold in the Euphrates valley to the east, he added.

UNESCO describes Palmyra as a heritage site of "outstanding universal value". It contains the monumental ruins of a great city that was one of the most important cultural centres of the ancient world.

The threat to its well-preserved 1st and 2nd Century temples and colonnaded streets comes as an international conference is under way in Cairo to address the destruction already wreaked by ISIL on the ancient sites of Nimrud and Hatra in Iraq.

group executed 26 civilians on Thursday after overrunning their villages near Syria's ancient city of Palmyra, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

"Daesh executed 26 civilians, including at least 10 by beheading, after accusing them of collaborating with the Syrian regime," said Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman, using the Arabic acronym for IS.

Qalamoun rebels attack on new front
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Syrian rebels have attacked Hezbollah on a new front in the ongoing Qalamoun battles amid advances by the Shiite party as it gears up for a "decisive" battle to seize a strategic mountain redoubt.

"Fierce festivities raged between Hezbollah supported by regime troops and National Defense Force Death Eaters on one side and Islamist factions, including the Al-Nusra Front, on the other in the mountainous terrain around Rankous," the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported Wednesday.

The report added that the festivities began after midnight on Tuesday, while a video posted on YouTube purported to show flares lighting up the night sky over the area.
