Somali woman MP famed for political songs shot dead by Islamists
[AF.REUTERS] A Somali member of parliament famed for political and patriotic songs she sang over decades was rubbed out on Wednesday in Mogadishu by Islamist gunnies, a fellow politician and Salafist tough guys said.

51 French nationals aboard missing Algerian plane

An Air Algérie flight from Burkina Faso to Algeria that went missing over northern Mali early Thursday was carrying dozens of French nationals, according to a senior French official.

A total of 51 French citizens were among the 110 passengers and six crew aboard flight AH 5017, French Transport Minister Frédéric Cuvillier said.

More than six hours after the flight was scheduled to arrive in Algiers, an Algerian aviation official told Reuters the plane had crashed. But he declined to provide any details of the location of the plane or the cause of the crash.

"I can confirm that it has crashed," said the official, who declined to be named.

France’s Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius later told reporters the plane had “probably crashed”.

He said France has dispatched two Mirage fighter jets to search the area where the plane went missing but that “no trace of the aircraft has yet been found”.

This contradicted an Air Algérie announcement, made via Twitter moments earlier, that the plane had crashed near Tilemsi, some 70 km from the Malian city of Gao.

Conflicting reports

There have been several conflicting reports as to the nationalities of the plane’s passengers.

According to Burkinabe Transport Minister Jean Bertin Ouedrago, there were 50 French citizens, 24 Burkina Faso nationals, six Lebanese, five Canadians, four Algerians, two Luxembourg nationals, one Swiss, one Nigerian, one Cameroonian and one Malian on flight AH 5017.

But an Air Algerie representative in Burkina Faso, Kara Terki, told a news conference that the passenger list also included one Belgian, one Ukrainian and one Romanian and that there had been eight, and not six, Lebanese citizens on board. He said there were no Malians on the list.

The AFP news agency quoted officials as saying there were at least 20 Lebanese passengers on the plane.

A spokeswoman for SEPLA, Spain's pilots’ union, told Reuters that the aircraft’s six crew were all from Spain, but could not give further details.

Commander, Wanis Bukhamada, has demanded that reinforcements be sent to Benghazi to help crush Ansar al-Sharia
...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Libyaand Yemen, with the Libyan versions currently most active. Tunisia's Shabaab al-Tawhid started out an Ansar al-Sharia and changed its name in early 2014. after the attack on the 316 Brigade's headquarters two days ago.

In a statement last night, Bukhamada demanded that all Libyan military forces in the east as well as the Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan Army go to Benghazi to defend it against what he called as"terrorists".

He also announced that all Special Forces soldiers were on alert and that they would react strongly to any assault on its camps or on Benghazi.

Calling on all Libyans to take a stand against "these terrorist groups", he also urged the government to take a firm position regarding them. Moreover, he demanded that the "real revolutionaries" also clearly define their position in light of the attacks.

What had happened to the 316 Brigade was an act of terror, he said.

The attack was the third against army facilities, he added, noting that the group had previously attacked the Benghazi Security Directorate and the Zawia Martyrs Brigade headquarters.

"We are preparing ourselves to respond rightly," said Bukhamada. "We hereby announce that we are launching a full-blown operation against these "terrorists". Forces from the Libyan Army, as well as members of the Petroleum Facility Guards (PFG) are currently passing through Tobruk and Beida to join us in the fight for Benghazi."

were killed in Benghazi yesterday evening and three others critically injured after a double suicide kaboom at their camp in Buatni.

Head of Saiqa Special Forces Investigations Unit Fadel Al-Hassi told the Libya Herald two cars laden with explosives had stormed the gates at Saiqa's main base, a separate premises to the 319 Brigade camp which was attacked by Ansar al-Sharia
...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. on Monday. He said perimeter guards managed to shoot one of the bombers who continued driving some 200 metres into the camp before exploding his device on a football pitch used for recreation. Hassi estimated that the bombs would have been around nine kilograms each in weight.

He said it was unclear whether the second attacker, who followed behind, had detonated his bomb or whether the force of the first kaboom had triggered the second. He explained that the attack took place just after Maghreb prayers as the brigade members were breaking their fast. He referred to the attackers as "sons of dogs".

Hassi said a total of 23 members of Saiqa had been killed at 319 Brigade's camp in festivities which ended yesterday.

Heavy fighting resumes at Tripoli International Airport

Fuel tanks hit in clashes near Libyan airport
[AF.REUTERS] Fuel storage tanks that supply Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
were hit on Wednesday in festivities between rival Libyan militias, igniting a huge blaze near the international airport.

More than 40 people have been killed in some of the worst violence in the capital since the 2011 war that ousted Muammar Qadaffy
...Custodian of Wheelus AFB for 42 long years until he was ejected from the gene pool by his indignant citizens...
, as rival brigades of former fighters battle with rockets and mortars for control of the airport.

Firefighters used foam spray to douse the flames at the fuel storage facility, bringing the blaze under control. Officials said only a semi-full tank had been hit by a shell.

Tripoli and the eastern city of Benghazi have faced days of heavy street fighting among armed brigades and militias who once battled Qadaffy and now want to claim what they see as their rightful share of power in post-war Libya.

A twin suicide kaboom at a Libyan army base in Benghazi killed at least four solders on Tuesday, in an escalation of festivities between Islamist Lions of Islam and regular forces battling to oust them from the eastern city.

Libya's fragile government, with no strong standing army of its own and hamstrung by political infighting, is struggling to impose order on the vast North African OPEC oil producer whose turmoil threatens to spill over its borders.

In another blow to the government, Libya's oil production has fallen this week, eroding increases since April in revenue for the state after officials managed to negotiate an end to a blockade of vital oil ports.

A front man for the National Oil Corporation said production on Monday had been at 450,000 barrels per day down from 555,000 bpd a few days earlier, partly because El-Feel oilfield had reduced output due to the festivities in Tripoli.

#1  A close friend of mine in Libya sent me a video of the explosion captured on a security camera. The blast was enormous. The fuel made a gigantic fuel air mixture bomb out of the storage tanks and the fireball, I estimate was over 400 yards wide.

The fireball engulfed several dozen automobiles on the airport road and it did not look good.

I had hope Libya would eventually become something like adult supervision in North Africa but we've jacked this one up big time leaving the country and its citizens to the devices of the militias and the fanatics.

Bomb targeting imam in north Nigeria kills at least 15
[AF.REUTERS] A bomb tossed off the back of a cycle of violence at a Nigerian Moslem holy man killed at least 15 people on a busy commercial road in the northern city of Kaduna on Wednesday, witnesses said.

The blast scattered debris and dead bodies on the Alkali Road in the city centre, but missed Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, who was conducting Moslem prayers in Murtala Muhammed square, two witnesses told Rooters by telephone.

The group has often attacked Moslem leaders and imams who criticise its hardline Salafist ideology.

Witness Yusuf Suleiman, a trader, said that he counted 15 bodies in a police van after the kaboom.

Police were not immediately available for comment.

Europe
Maccabi Haifa Players Attacked During Austria Training Match
[Ynet] Anti-Israel protestors invade pitch in latest anti-Semitic incident in Europe; Club: 'Attack was premeditated'. Riot-free march in Paris under eyes of police.

Anti-Israel protesters invaded the pitch and physically confronted Maccabi Haifa players towards the end of a Wednesday training match in Austria. Officials called time on the match against French club Lille at the 86th minute.

The players left the dressing room — under protection — an hour after the match ended because some protesters had remained outside the stadium.

The rioting fans tried to attack Yossi Benayoun, the national team captain, as well as other members of the squad. One player was spat on, while the coach entered the pitch to protect his players.

None of the players were maimed. They walked to the dressing rooms as security forces cleared the protesters. One player, defender Samuel Scheimann, claimed at least one of the rioters was armed with a pocket knife.

Maccabi Haifa released a statement regarding the incident. "We experienced an uncomfortable atmosphere of violence on the pitch and in the stands. The attack was premeditated and dangerous in light of the incitement in Turkish media. (The protesters) were mostly Turkish immigrants."

In La Belle France, days after two banned pro-Gazoo protests degenerated into violence, several thousands of demonstrators marched Wednesday through Gay Paree under the eye of hundreds of riot police, this time in a legal protest.

With banners featuring slogans such as "Boycott Israel" and "Israel Murderer," demonstrators tested a government grappling with how best to allow freedom of expression while containing violence — and hate speech against La Belle France's Jews.

Jewish leaders say vocal anti-Semitic chants in previous demonstrations and several attacks on synagogues reflect rising anti-Semitism in Europe.

La Belle France has Western Europe's largest Jewish and Mohammedan populations, and the Middle East conflict often means rocketing tensions in La Belle France.

"Today we are here for Paleostine, because we find Israel shameful, because children are dying, and it's unbearable to see all this," said Fatima El Fetoui, 56.

Wednesday's demonstrators said they were not anti-Semitic — they simply opposed Israel's actions against Gazoo.

"You just need to differentiate between Jews and Israel. What we are fighting is the Zionist state. I am not fighting the Israelis," said Vincent Santoro, 24.
Israel is a democracy, my dear. In a democracy, the citizens are the state. So yes, yes you are fighting the Israelis.

Great White North
Canadian Charged with Joining Islamist Fighters in Syria
[An Nahar] The Royal Canadian Mounted Police announced terrorism charges Wednesday against a 25-year-old Canadian for allegedly traveling to Syria to fight alongside Islamist fighters.

The charges against Hasibullah Yusufzai, 25, are the first ever laid against a Canadian under a new law passed last year that criminalized travel abroad for the purpose of terrorist activities.

"On July 17, 2014, the RCMP Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) in British Columbia charged Hasibullah Yusufzai, age 25, a resident of Burnaby, British Columbia, for leaving Canada to take part in terrorist activity," Sergeant Greg Cox said in a statement.

"The accused is being sought for leaving Canada on January 21, 2014, to commit an offence for the benefit of, at the direction of or in association with a terrorist group," he said.

"The individual is known to have traveled to Syria to join Islamist fighters."

Canada's spy service estimates that more than 100 young men have

left Canada to fight in foreign wars and join jihadist causes.

In 2011 another young man, Mohammed Hersi, was tossed in the calaboose
You have the right to remain silent...
at the Toronto airport under another anti-terror law for attempting to join a Somalia-based group listed by Canada as a banned terrorist organization.

Hersi, 28, was convicted in May of seeking to join the Shabaab, an al-Qaeda-linked group that grabbed credit for a suicide commando assault on Nairobi's Westgate shopping mall last year which left at least 67 people dead.

He faces up to 10 years in prison when he is sentenced on Thursday.

20 suspected militants killed in fresh N Waziristan airstrikes
[DAWN] At least 20 suspected turbans were killed and their hideouts were destroyed in early morning air strikes carried out by fighter jets in the Shawal tehsil of North Wazoo, Pak military claims on Wednesday.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) claimed that foreign turbans were also among the killed.

A statement issued by the ISPR said that foreign currency was seized from Mirali Bazar during the operation while an IED and explosives factory was also discovered in the area.

It said that four isolated terrorist hideouts were destroyed early in the morning through aerial strikes in Shawal Valley, killing 20 local and foreign terrorists.

However,

these claims could not be independently verified.

The ISPR statement said that 32 trucks, carrying 220 tons of rations that include flour, rice, sugar, lentils, cooking oil, dry milk and tea were dispatched from Race Course Ground for the IDPs.

This entire ration was voluntarily deposited by the residents of Islamabad and Rawalpindi at collection points established by the Pakistain army.

It was 2nd consignment dispatched by the Rawalpindi Corps for the IDPs, making a total of 440 tons of ration so far, said the statement.

Nearly a million people have fled the offensive in North Waziristan, which is aimed at wiping out longstanding krazed killer strongholds in the area, which borders Afghanistan.

150 Hamas militants surrender to IDF in Gaza
The IDF took over 150 Hamas terrorists prisoner after they surrendered in last night's offensive on the neighborhoods of Khan Yunis and Rafiyah in the Gaza Strip.

The prisoners will be transferred to the Shin Bet for questioning regarding the movements and operations of Hamas in Gaza.
Aren't they afraid of being tortured & staff?

#4  Frank. I am not French, I am a Pied Noir ie from the guys who fought at Cassino, landed in the South of France and stopped the Germans push towards Strasbourg during the Battle of the Bulge. De Gaulle only sent his precious French to the front when the Germans began to surrender in droves. A secondary motive for him was German populations seeing French troops taking their towns and cities thus making them believe the French had kicked German asses to get there instead of a bunch of unwashed Pieds Noirs and North-Africans.

6 interceptions after second salvo fired at central Israel
For the second time on Thursday morning, Hamas fired a salvo of rockets at central Tel Aviv.

#1  Since the rockets were intercepting (by the completely non-functional Iron Dome system), they do not count as war crimes, atrocities, or even general bad behavior. If this seems insane to you, then you are just a right-wing h8er!

IDF Israeli military stunned by scale of Hamas war infrastructure
Israel has been shocked by the scope and methods of Hamas tunnel warfare. In at least one case, Hamas fighters have infiltrated Israel wearing Israeli military uniforms. On July 21, the military reported two Hamas squads that infiltrated Israel through a tunnel from the Gaza Strip. Military sources said at least 30 Hamas fighters in Israeli uniforms sought to attack a nearby kibbutz. At least 10 Hamas attackers were killed by Israeli air and ground fire. They were found wearing Israel Army-issued uniforms and equipment, including body armor. It was not clear how Hamas acquired the Israeli military equipment.

The Hamas attack tunnels, estimated at up to 60, have forced Israel to close areas to civilian traffic.

“The [Hamas] organization has used the period in which the Muslim Brotherhood ruled Egypt to establish a real military industry in the Gaza Strip, with advanced tooling equipment, and to smuggle a large amount of anti-tank missiles, including Kornet anti-tank missiles that were transferred to Syria before the outbreak of the civil war
there,” Israeli analyst Amir Rapaport said. At one point, one of the Hamas forces fired a Russian-origin anti-tank guided missile that killed four Israeli soldiers in a jeep.

The sources said the military was working with the Israel Security Agency to identify Hamas tunnel attacks. Hours before the attack, the agency warned of Hamas tunnel strikes from the northern Gaza Strip.

“We have to be patient since the fighting will continue for as long as it is needed,” Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon said.

#3  if the tunnels go into Israel proper, the IDF can use such tunnels for intel and maybe even for operations given the right technology (which I'm sure they are working on)

so I wouldn't be surprised if a few tunnels were left undiscovered

The Gaza Op: Day 17
[IsraelTimes] Cabinet mulls expanded Gazoo op, Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, again rules out ceasefire, FAA extends flight ban

The Times of Israel is liveblogging events as they unfold through Thursday, the 17th day of Operation Protective Edge. Late on Wednesday, Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal rejected a ceasefire unless the blockade of Gazoo is lifted, and the Israeli cabinet met to discuss expanding the ground op against Hamas's rockets, tunnels, and infrastructure. Earlier 30,000 attended the funeral of US-born soldier Max Steinberg in Jerusalem, as other funerals took place elsewhere in Israel. The IDF corpse count rose to 32, with another soldier MIA presumed dead and claimed by Hamas to be in its hands. Only 27 of the 100-plus foreign airlines that use Ben-Gurion Airport are still flying in, and the FAA has extended its ban for another 24 hours after a rocket hit a home near the airport on Tuesday. IDF-Hamas fighting in Gazoo remains intensive, Hamas is still trying to carry out attacks in Israel through tunnels — a major tunnel found Wednesday contained maps and weaponry for an imminent attack — and rockets are still being fired.

#1  this is the fourth day of fighting in some areas with heavy Hamas troop concentration

I presume they have enough food and water but the strain of prolonged combat should be wearing down their reflex, discipline, etc.

with respect to rockets, they may be getting low in launchers by now - the total number of rockets launched as of 1800 local time was 30 - unless they pick up the pace this will be seen as evidence of attrition

295 Suspects Arrested For Jerusalem Riots
[Ynet] Some 20 Arab suspects were arrested overnight Wednesday for riots that were taking place in the past recent days in East Jerusalem neighborhoods. Since the riots in Shuafat following Mohammed Abu Khdeir's murder, 295 suspects had been arrested for rioting and 71 indictments were served.
"Never mind the usual suspects, Avi. Just bring in everyone on our wish list. Plus all the guilty of rioting, of course."
"Ok, Sarge. Though the two lists pretty much are the same people -- I ran a quick search. Should I call their cell phones?"
"Just ping 'em, so we know where to pick them up."

Southeast Asia
Abu Sayyaf frees last of four kidnapped social workers
Abu Sayyaf gunmen released the last of 4 social workers they kidnapped in Sulu province.

Sulu police chief Abraham Orbita said they recovered Roberto Saputalo in Talipao town late Tuesday. Orbita said, "His safe release was due to the pressure of law enforcement operations by security sector and the local government."

Abu Sayyaf rebels also freed recently two other social workers in Patikul town. It is not known if ransoms were paid for their safe release. The kidnappers had earlier freed another social worker, Lerna Jurah. The four social workers were conducting a survey on a government anti-poverty program when armed men seized them in the village of Upper Sinumaan in Talipao town.

The Abu Sayyaf is still holding at least ten kidnapped victims, including foreigners seized from the neighboring Tawi-Tawi province and Sabah in Malaysia.

Roadside bomb injures four Thai border policemen
Four Thai border patrol police officers were wounded - two seriously - when a bomb went off on the side of a highway in Pattani's Muang district yesterday. The blast also damaged the victims' police pick-up.

The first two were in critical condition with bomb shrapnel to the head, which prompted doctors to send them via helicopter to a hospital in Songkhla province.

In related news, Ra Ngae district police in Narathiwat province arrested two suspects who later reportedly confessed to planning and carrying out bomb attacks in tambon Tanyongmas last Sunday. The pair was seen on CCTV footage riding a motorcycle in the area after allegedly planting the bombs.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Four Rockets from Eastern Mountain Belt Hit Bekaa Towns
[An Nahar] Four rockets landed Wednesday evening in several northern Bekaa towns after being reportedly fired from the Eastern Mountain Range which straddles the Lebanese-Syrian border.

According to state-run National News Agency, the rockets hit the outskirts of the towns of al-Bzaliyeh, Hrabta and al-Labweh.

Voice of Leb radio (93.3) said the projectiles were fired from the Eastern Mountain Belt.

Al-Labweh's municipal chief confirmed to Sky News Arabia that three rockets had fallen on the town "without causing casualties."

Later on Wednesday, the Lebanese Army issued a statement confirming that "four rockets landed in the outskirts of the towns of al-Bzaliyeh and Hrabta after being fired from the Eastern Mountain Belt, causing no casualties."

"Army forces immediately staged patrols in the targeted area as a military expert inspected the impact site," the statement added.

"I am a soldier and I know the assault against the Sunni sect," Corporal Atef Mohammed Saadeddine said in a Youtube video published on Jul 23, 2014.

The soldiers states the reasons behind his decision to desert the army and join al-Nusra Front in the video.

He lashed out at the resistance, considering it to be assaulting the Sunni youth.

Saadeddine revealed that Hizbullah members carry arms at checkpoints and "no one objects."

"Terrorists are not those who are defending their sect," he said.
