Four MQM workers among 12 go 'missing' on their way to Hyderabad
[DAWN] At least 12 friends, four of them stated to be workers of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement
...English: United National Movement, generally known as MQM, is the 3rd largest political party and the largest secular political party in Pakistain with particular strength in Sindh. From 1992 to 1999, the MQM was the target of the Pak Army's Operation Cleanup leaving thousands of urdu speaking civilians dead...
, went 'missing' on Tuesday night while they were on their way to Hyderabad from Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
to attend the wedding of a friend of theirs, police, party officials and relatives said here on Wednesday.
Didn't survive the reception, huh?
All of them belong to Gulistan-e-Jauhar, where the relatives protested and lodged their 'missing' report at a cop shoppe.
"Nope. Ain't seen 'em."
The residents of Noman Grand City of Gulistan-e-Jauhar had left their apartments in three vehicles to attend the marriage ceremony of their friend Zain in Hyderabad. When they reached near Hyderabad, they were intercepted by unknown men who forced them to disembark from their vehicles and took them away and since then their whereabouts were not known, said their relatives and the MQM.

Policeman killed in drive-by shooting at Niger Embassy in Cairo
[AlAhram] Two coppers and a civilian were also injured

A policeman was killed and three others were maimed when person or persons unknown shot up security forces outside the Embassy of Niger in Cairo, the interior ministry announced early Wednesday.

The ministry said in a statement that a police conscript died while two other low-ranking coppers and an Egyptian civilian working at the embassy were maimed when assailants in a private vehicle drove by and shot at them at around 1am in the morning.

The injured were transferred to hospital and police are conducting investigations, the statement added.

This is the second attack at a foreign mission in Egypt after a blast hit the Italian Consulate in downtown Cairo on 11 July killing one civilian and injuring 10 others.

The Embassy of Niger is located on Haram Street in Giza, an area known as a base for Islamist supporters of Morsi.

Islamist forces of Evil have in the past conducted deadly attacks against police checkpoints around Cairo University, close to Giza Square. Islamists and security forces have also faced off in deadly confrontations on a number of occasions in the town of Kerdasa, south of the Haram district.

IS Car Bomb Kills 4 near Mosque in Yemen Capital

group near a mosque in Yemen's rebel-held capital killed four people Wednesday, medical sources and witnesses said.

An IS Twitter user calling himself Karar al-Moayad said the jihadist group had carried out the attack and that it had caused "several dead".

Witnesses said the blast went off near a mosque of the Bohra sect of Shiite Islam, not far from Ath-Thawra Hospital in the Rammah district of Sanaa, where several attacks claimed by IS have targeted Iranian catspaws.

Another four people were maimed, a medical source told AFP, raising an earlier toll of two killed to four.

Four people were also killed in a similar kaboom on July 21, according to a toll provided by the Huthi bully boyz who control large parts of Yemen.

IS kabooms targeting several Shiite mosques in the capital on March 21 killed 142 people.

Yemen to Merge 'Resistance' Fighters with Army
[AnNahar] The exiled Yemeni government has issued an order for Lions of Islam fighting alongside loyalist troops against Iranian catspaws be merged into the armed forces, as festivities raged Wednesday in the country's south.

The supreme defense council, which met in Riyadh Tuesday, decided to "assimilate members of the Popular Resistance into the units of the armed forces and security forces," the government-run news agency said.

The meeting, headed by President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi, took the decision to reward them for their "brave contribution to defending the homeland."

Popular Resistance units were formed when the Iran-backed rebels and their allies advanced on southern regions after they had overran the capital in September.

Meanwhile,
...back at the buffalo wallow, Yellow Wolf clutched at his chest and fell from his horse...
festivities raged in the south, where pro-government forces expanded their area of control after recapturing the port of Aden, Yemen's second city, after four months of fighting.

The loyalists pushed back rebels in Lahoum, on Aden's northern outskirts, following heavy fighting in which 12 rebels were killed, military sources said.

Three pro-Hadi fighters were killed and dozens maimed, medical sources said.

The area lies on the road to restive Lahj
... a Yemeni governate located in the southwestern corner of the Arabian Peninsula. It is the stomping grounds on the southern secessionist al-Harak movement
, where loyalists have been tightening the noose on rebels, with the aim of recapturing the strategic Al-Anad airbase.

The festivities further evidenced the failure to take hold of a five-day truce declared from midnight Sunday by the Saudi-led, pro-government Arab coalition to allow the delivery of desperately needed relief supplies.
Did anyone really expect it to hold?

Belgium Jails Syria Jihad Recruiters for Up to 20 Years
[AnNahar] A court handed down jail terms of up to 20 years Wednesday after a trial of 32 people charged with running one of Belgium's largest jihadist recruitment networks sending fighters to Syria, reports said.

Many of the defendants were tried in absentia, among them Abdelhamid Abaaoud, who was sentenced to 20 years, the Belga news agency said.

Abaaoud, a Belgian of Moroccan origin, remains on the lam after slipping through a police dragnet in connection with a separate case. Investigators believe he was the brains behind an Islamist cell the authorities broke up in January, thwarting an alleged plot to mount attacks against the police.

Police shot and killed two suspected Lions of Islam during the raid in Verviers, eastern Belgium, shortly after Islamist attacks in Gay Paree left 17 people dead.

In February, Abaaoud, who was reported at one time to be in Greece, grabbed credit for the plot against coppers and said he had joined the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group in Syria.

The court in Brussels sentenced the second main defendant Khalid Zerkani to 12 years in jail for encouraging people to go to Syria, Belga said. Zerkani, who appeared in court, had consistently denied the charges.

Among others sentenced, Belga news agency said two defendants, a mother and her son, received eight years each. The woman's other two sons -- one of whom is believed to have died in Syria while the other appeared in court -- were placed in durance vile
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
for 20 years given their previous criminal records, the court ruled.

The case attracted considerable attention amid fears that young Belgians are being enticed to the battlefields in Syria and Iraq to return home battle-hardened and dangerously radicalized. Up to 400 are believed to have gone down that route, making Belgium the largest source of foreign jihadist fighters relative to its population.

In February, a court in the northern city of Antwerp sentenced the leader of the Sharia4Belgium group to 12 years on similar charges in one of the largest cases of its kind in Europe.

After the Verviers raid, the government deployed troops outside major institutions in Belgium including government buildings, EU premises and diplomatic missions.

FBI arrests Lackawanna man for recruiting for ISIS
[BuffaloNews] FBI agents tossed in the clink
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
a Lackawanna man they say was trying to recruit local people for ISIS and who was about to leave the country.

Arafat Nagi, 44, was preparing to leave Lackawanna, and agents believed he was headed to the Middle East to fight with ISIS, prompting agents to take him into custody, according to a source.

#1  This A-hole was a vocal supporter of the Lackawanna Six

The retired FBI agent who headed the Lackawanna Six investigation says Arafat M. Nagi was a vocal supporter of the six men who traveled to Afghanistan to train with the al-Qaida terrorist network.

“I believe he wanted to go along with them,” Peter J. Ahearn told The Buffalo News after Nagi’s arrest for being an alleged supporter of the ISIS terrorist group. “He was trying to reach out to the man who organized the trip, but he never did go with them. I don’t know why.”

Ahearn recalled that Nagi was actively investigated and interviewed by federal agents during the probe that led to the Lackawanna Six arrests in September 2002. He said he was “not really surprised” when he heard of Nagi’s arrest Wednesday.

“I think that he so much wanted to be a part of something like that. I think it led to what happened today,” Ahearn said hours after the arrest.

Nagi’s attorney, Jeremy D. Schwartz, said his client denies allegations that he tried to join ISIS or that he tried to recruit others. Nagi knew members of the Lackawanna Six, Schwartz said, but that was not a crime.

“He knew them, and I know that agents interviewed him,” Schwartz said. “A lot of people in Lackawanna knew those guys, and a lot of people were interviewed by the FBI. I am sure that if they had come up with any evidence of criminal activity by my client, they would have charged him with it.”

Terror suspects escape from police custody
[DAWN] PESHAWAR: Two suspected snuffies beat feet from custody under mysterious circumstances at Gulbahar cop shoppe on Tuesday night prompting the police high-ups to order an inquiry against the station house officer concerned.

Official sources said that the two suspects, whose names could not be verified, were taken into custody a few days ago in connection with an attack on a team of Rider Squad police here. The attack had resulted in death of one police official identified as Janat Gul and injuries to the other.

Following the occurrence, SSP Dr Mian Saeed has ordered an inquiry against the SHO concerned. Two gunnies of the SHO have also been taken into custody.

An official said that the two terror suspects fled away during their shifting from one portion of the cop shoppe to another for interrogation. Apparently, the suspects were in illegal custody as they had not been produced before any court for getting their physical custody.

SC rejects last-minute appeal to defer Yakub Memon's hanging
[HINDUSTANTIMES] A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court rejected early on Thursday morning a desperate plea by Yakub Memon's lawyers for staying the 1993 Mumbai blasts convict's death sentence, just two hours before he was to be hanged.

This was the second time that the court had cleared Memon's execution in the last 24 hours.

A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court headed by Justice Dipak Misra -- that started hearing a last-minute plea for deferring Memon's execution at 3.20 am -- ruled that Memon had been given enough opportunities.

"It will be travesty of justice if the death warrant is stayed in a case of this nature," the court ruled in its verdict delivered at 4.55 am.

"There is no question of victory or elation. I have done my duty," Attorney General Mukul Rohtagi said.

Jordan Jails 8 for Plots against U.S. Troops, Israel
Clearing the decks for action.
[AnNahar] Jordan handed down jail sentences Wednesday against seven of its citizens and a Syrian for planning attacks on U.S. soldiers in the country and on the Israeli embassy, a judicial source said.

The plots in question would have involved "terrorist acts" against the U.S. service personnel at a Jordan military base in Al-Moaqar in 2006 and against the Israeli embassy in Amman in 2008, the source said without elaborating.

The charges included "plotting to commit a terrorist act, and possession of weapons and explosives for use" in those acts.

The Jordanians were all tossed in the calaboose

in May 2014, but no details were provided on their identities or the surrounding circumstances.

The leader of the group, a Jordanian, was given a 10-year term with hard labor, while his remaining compatriots were enjugged
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
for between two and three years under the same conditions.

The Syrian, who was tried in absentia, was sentenced to 15 years.

The defendants were also accused of collaborating with the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah in 2011 and 2012 in a bid to ship arms from Jordan to the Paleostinian territories.

Jordan amended its anti-terror law last year to make it an offense to "belong to or attempt to join any gang or terrorist organization".

AQ arrests another 18 U.S. trained rebels attempting to enter Syria
[PJ Media] On Monday, I reported here at PJ Media that the first 50 graduates of Champs's U.S.-trained "vetted moderate" Syrian rebel army had left Turkey for Syria two weeks ago -- and haven't been heard from since.

But today comes a new report that a fresh class of U.S.-trained recruits were arrested today upon entering Syria.

Tanir links to this Turkish Sputnik News report that says Jabhat al-Nusra, Al-Qaeda's official affiliate in Syria, arrested the 18 U.S.-trained members of Obama's "vetted moderate" rebel army for being American agents.

This is just the latest embarrassing episode for Obama's $500 million anti-ISIS army approved by congressional Republicans back in September.

Despite having spent half of those funds already, Defense Secretary Ashton Carter revealed to Congress earlier this month that only 60 fighters had been trained so far. This amounts to $4 million per fighter.

We know from the McClatchy report earlier this week that 50 members of that first class are MIA. Now 18 members of the next class are in the custody of al-Qaeda.

Dunno. If Jobhunt al-Nusra or any team in the Not-Assad Conference, they might be a bit concerned about all the money Obama is freeing up for Iran therefore the Pro-Assad Conference.

Syrian jets bombard plain after rebel attack: Monitor
[AlAhram] The Syrian air force bombarded a plain in the northwest of the country overnight, a group monitoring the war said, after forces of Evil launched an offensive to advance deeper into government-held areas vital to Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Oppressor of the Syrians and the Lebs...
.

The forces of Evil are seeking to drive into the Sahl al-Ghab plain, an area crucial to the defence of the western coastal mountains that are part of the heartland of Assad's Alawite sect as well as lying close to Hama city to the southeast.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which tracks the conflict using contacts on the ground, said Syrian warplanes had carried out more than 160 air strikes on the plain and in the nearby Idlib countryside to try to disrupt the myrmidons' progress towards key Assad territory.

The myrmidons, who have entered at the northern tip of the plain, can use their anti-tank missiles to target Syrian army tank positions, giving them some advantages over flat ground, a diplomat tracking Syria said.

Most of Idlib province was captured earlier this year in a major advance by the myrmidon grouping "Army of Conquest" against government forces.

On Tuesday, supporters of the "Army of Conquest", which is involved in the Sahl al-Ghab offensive, said fighters had seized a power station in the area and listed a total of 16 locations captured from government forces in the attack.

The military has concentrated on defending Syria's west, a tactic Assad alluded to on Sunday when he said the army had been forced to give up some areas in order to hold onto more important ones during the four-year conflict.

Insurgents involved in the current offensive under the "Army of Conquest" banner include the al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front, the Islamist Ahrar al-Sham
...a Syria jihadi group made up of Islamists and salafists, not that there's that much difference, formed into a brigade. They make up the main element of the Islamic Front but they don't profess adoration of al-Qaeda and they've been fighting (mainly for survival) against the Islamic State. Their leadership was wiped out at a single blow by a suicide kaboom at a crowded basement meeting in September, 2014...
faction and groups including Chechen and central Asian fighters, according to the Observatory.

The coastal mountain range, which acts as a buffer for government-held cities such as Latakia, is west of Sahl al-Ghab. The coastal cities, mountains and the plain itself are all home to Alawite populations.

"If the rebels take the plain then they could push all the way down and could cut off Homs and Hama," the diplomat added.

US, allies target Islamic State in Syria, Iraq with 14 air strikes
[Ynet] The United States and its allies conducted 11 air strikes in Iraq on Tuesday against the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
and also targeted the Death Eater group with three strikes in Syria, the U.S. military said.
The drone operators in Iraqi Kurdistan must have been taking the day off.
Strikes in Iraq were scattered throughout the country, with three hitting tactical units and destroying an armored vehicle, structure and fighting position near Ramadi, according to a statement released by the Joint Coalition Task Force on Wednesday.

Two of the strikes in Syria were near Al Hasakah, hitting an Islamic State tactical unit and destroying two fighting positions, the statement said.

#1  14 Air Strikes! I wonder which think tank came to the magic number of 14? Meanwhile Syrian warplanes carried out 160 air strikes of their own. Which shows there's fighting for appearance and fighting to win.

#2  Note the number 14 relates to the number of sorties daily and that number seems to remain static. Recently, there are reports of as many as 28 attacks, but almost certainly that increase is due to use of drones. A wannabet moment: Wannabet that in the year 2025 there will be no more manned aircraft.

#5  Could have flown twice that many off a little WWII Jeep carrier - and done it twice a day.
