Mullah Omar: The reclusive face of Afghan insurgency
Posted to obits on the assumption he's really dead.
[DAWN] According to Taliban biographers, Mullah Omar
... a minor Pashtun commander in the war against the Soviets who made good as leader of the Taliban. As ruler of Afghanistan, he took the title Leader of the Faithful. The imposition of Pashtunkhwa on the nation institutionalized ignorance and brutality in a country already notable for its own fair share of ignorance and brutality...
was born in the Chah-e-Himmat village of Khakrez district in Kandahar, Afghanistan in the year 1960. His father Maulvi Ghulam Nabi was a religious scholar as were other members of his family.

After the death of his father, Mullah Omar moved to Deh-Rawood district of Uruzgan province where he sought religious education under the supervision of his paternal uncles Maulvi Muhammad Anwar and Maulvi Muhammad Jummah.

At the age of eight, Mullah Muhammad Omar joined the primary seminary of Shar-e-Kohna area in Deh-Rawood district.

After the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, Mullah Omar joined the fight against the Soviets and rose to prominence as a "tough fighter" and an "efficient commander".

In 1992, after the collapse of Afghan president Dr Najibullah's government and with the eruption of civil war between various mujahideen factions, Mullah Omar ceased combat activities and set up a religious seminary in Gishaan village of Sang-e-Hisaar area of Maiwand district in Kandahar province. He then continued with his religious studies along with his former mujahideen colleagues after the war against the Communist forces.

Maulvi Sadiq, a Taliban official in Kandahar province said in 2011 that after the Soviet withdrawal, the creation of the Taliban movement and its subsequent advance was triggered by the kidnapping and rape of a young girl in Kandahar by a local warlord.

According to him, Mullah Omar and some of his old colleagues decided to take on the warlord who had allegedly kidnapped and raped the girl. Other seminary students also joined them and the group transformed into the Taliban movement of the 1990s.

The government of Afghanistan under the Taliban was referred to as the 'Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan' and was formed with an initial cadre 1,500 religious scholars and seminary students from Afghanistan, who pledged allegiance to Mullah Omar.

The initial pledge of allegiance eventually gained momentum and spread to other areas, with many religious scholars from the region pledging support. Around this time, Saudi billionaire the late Osama bin Laden
... who is now among the dear departed, though not among the dearest...
along with his entourage comprising hundreds of Arab fighters and commanders moved to Afghanistan and pledged allegiance to Omar.

Al Qaeda emerged and its ties with the Taliban movement grew strong in a short period of time, especially post-911, when Mullah Omar refused to hand over bin Laden to the United States.

In addition to bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri
... Formerly second in command of al-Qaeda, now the head cheese, occasionally described as the real brains of the outfit. Formerly the Mister Big of Egyptian Islamic Jihad. Bumped off Abdullah Azzam with a car boom in the course of one of their little disputes. Is thought to have composed bin Laden's fatwa entitled World Islamic Front Against Jews and Crusaders. Currently residing in the North Wazoo area. That is not a horn growing from the middle of his forehead, but a prayer bump, attesting to how devout he is...
, Al Qaeda's top tier commanders such as Mustafa Abu Yazid, Abu Yahya al-Libi, Sheikh Issa al-Masri and others were successful in influencing the Taliban, convincing them to change many of their opinions, from issues of Islamic jurisprudence to the general worldview that shifted from an Afghan-centric mindset to that of global jihad.

Despite public statements from the Taliban which have given the impression of a local resistance movement, the Afghan Taliban have once again provided sanctuaries to Al Qaeda operatives -- this time to the fighters escaping operation Zarb-e-Azb
..the Pak offensive against Qaeda in Pakistain and the Pak Taliban in North Wazoo. The name refers to the sword of the Prophet (PTUI!)...
in Pakistain.

Mullah Omar was recently confronted with a new challenge -- the rise of His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
...formerly merely the head of ISIL and a veteran of the Bagram jailhouse. Looks like a new messiah to bajillions of Moslems, like just another dead-eyed mass murder to the rest of us...
's self-styled Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
For now, the majority of Islamist Lion of Islam groups seem to have preferred Mullah Omar's softer approach rather than Baghdadi's brutality.

Afghanistan
Afghanistan says Taliban leader dead, urges peace talks
[REUTERS] Afghanistan said on Wednesday that Mullah Omar, the elusive leader of the Taliban movement fighting to topple the government, died more than two years ago.

The announcement came a day or so before a second round of peace talks had been tentatively scheduled, and news of the fate of the one-eyed Omar could deepen Taliban divisions over whether to pursue negotiations with Kabul and who should replace him.

Omar had not been seen in public since fleeing when the Taliban was toppled from power by a U.S.-led coalition in 2001, and there has been speculation for years among militant circles that he was either incapacitated or had died.

"The government ... based on credible information, confirms that Mullah Mohammad Omar, leader of the Taliban, died in April 2013 in Pakistan," the presidential palace said in a brief statement, without specifying what the information was.

"The government of Afghanistan believes that grounds for the Afghan peace talks are more paved now than before, and thus calls on all armed opposition groups to seize the opportunity and join the peace process."

The Taliban's regular spokesman could not be reached for comment through normal channels.

The White House said it was aware of reports of the death of Omar and believed them to be "credible". Spokesman Eric Schultz said U.S. intelligence continued to look into the matter.

Preparations had been under way for the next round of talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban, provisionally planned for Thursday or Friday in a location yet to be confirmed.

Full Veil Banned in Key Niger Region over Boko Haram Fears
[AnNahar] Authorities in Niger's Diffa area, on the border with Nigeria, have banned the full Islamic veil following suicide kabooms in countries in the region by women wearing the religious garment, an official said Wednesday.

"Women in the region are forbidden from wearing the full veil until further notice, in order to prevent suicide attacks by Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
," Diffa mayor Hankouraou Biri-Kassoum told AFP.

The full veil has been banned in several regions of Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
after a string of bombings by women and girls, including attackers wearing the garment.

"It's better to prevent danger," a security source told AFP, adding that "a growing number of women and maidens of tender years are wearing the full veil in Diffa."

A night-time curfew has been imposed, while February's ban on cycle of violences -- the jihadists' vehicle of choice -- has been extended, the mayor said.

Niger has joined a regional campaign alongside Chad, Niger and Nigeria to battle Boko Haram, whose insurgency has killed at least 15,000 people since 2009 in the name of founding an Islamic caliphate.

While regional efforts have scored a number of victories in recent months, the Lions of Islam have unleashed a massive wave of violence since Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari was sworn in in May.

Dozens have been killed in a string of bombings and raids across the region.

On July 12, the Islamists raided Diffa prison in a likely bid to free detained members, killing a guard, according to local authorities.

Six days later, Boko Haram Lions of Islam killed 16 civilians in an attack on a southeastern Niger village.

In June, 38 non-combatants were killed -- including 10 children -- in a Boko Haram attack targeting two villages close to Diffa.

Arabia
US approves possible sale of $5.4 billion in PAC-3 missiles to Saudi Arabia
[AlAhram] The US State Department has approved the possible sale to Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
of $5.4 billion in additional PAC-3 missiles built by Lockheed Martin Corp , the Pentagon said on Wednesday.
Israel is promised the possible release of an imprisoned spy, Saudi Arabia is promised potential missiles. The concept of bribery has become sadly attenuated in these troubled times.

Norks behind Scuds fired into Saudi Arabia from Yemen
[Yonhap] Scud missiles fired into Saudi Arabia by Yemeni insurgents in recent months came from North Korea, according to a South Korean intelligence official, again illustrating North Korea's support for the weapons programs in the Middle East.

The official said that Saudi Arabia has shot down about 40 percent of some 20 Scud missiles fired by Houthi militants. He did not explain how South Korea reached the conclusion that the missiles originated in North Korea.

A former North Korean official, who was in a position to know about such arms deals, said, "North Korea has sold missiles to Yemen and sent missile engineers to that country in the 1990s."

Another former North Korean intelligence official said North Korea sold many Scuds to nations in the Middle East, adding that Egypt is the hub of the North Korean arms trade in the region.

Probe into Daesh subversion at Aussie schools
[Straits Times] The Australian state of New South Wales yesterday began an investigation into prayer sessions at all schools following revelations that students have been preaching extremist propaganda in classrooms and on playgrounds. The decision to audit schools in Australia's largest state followed reports that police were conducting counter-terrorism investigations into Daesh-inspired radicals operating in schoolyards.

Police have confirmed that a 17-year-old student at Epping Boys High School was being investigated for promoting extremist views. The student, apparently Afghani, had tried twice to travel to Syria to fight for Daesh in the past two years. At school, he reportedly preached in the playground and used school prayer sessions to spread extremist messages. The prayer sessions are permitted by the Department of Education, though students must have written permission from their parents to attend.

State Premier Mike Baird said the incident was "concerning and disturbing", and the government will audit all prayer groups of all religious dominations. In addition, police will develop a program to train staff at school to detect potential signs of radicalization.

Baird said, "We will never allow (schools) to become the setting for extremist ideologies. Our schools, our police and other authorities are operating in a new and different world, as far as risks to our young people are concerned. We are going to have to be vigilant, and take action as necessary."

Two students from Sydney Boys High School, an elite school, were detained by police at Sydney Airport in March after apparently planning to travel to Syria to fight for Daesh. In another case, Melbourne teenager and Muslim convert Jake Bilardi and apparently died while carrying out a suicide bombing in Iraq in March.

Canadian police: Couple plotted to kill Jewish kids
And now, the rest of the story:
[IsraelTimes] Self-described converts to Islam told undercover cop that if Jews are killed when they're young, they won't go to eternal hell

A Canadian couple convicted of plotting to bomb the British Columbia legislature wanted to infiltrate a synagogue and kill "small Jews" to save the children from going to hell, according to court documents.

Police notes presented in British Columbia's Supreme Court in Vancouver this week recounted Amanda Korody's husband, John Nuttall, telling an undercover officer that his wife thought she would be doing Jewish children a favor by sending them to paradise, since she believed "grown-up Jews" go to "eternal hell" when they die, the Victoria Times-Colonist reported Tuesday.

Earlier this year, Nuttall and Korody were found guilty of plotting to detonate homemade pressure-cooker bombs at the British Columbia legislature during crowded Canada Day celebrations two years ago. The couple, self-described Moslem converts, are back in court trying to have the verdict vacated due to police misconduct.

"I asked Nuttall how he thinks he will have access to Jewish kids and he said [he and his wife] were both white and could pass for Jewish," read the note from an undercover officer of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, dated March 2013.

"They will be regulars in the synagogue. They will gain the trust of everybody. And once they have everything they will get enough guns and ammo to go ahead with their mission."

Nuttall conceded that Jewish children were noncombatants but believed they would be raised to hate Arabs and Moslems, wrote the undercover officer. However,
it's easy to be generous with someone else's money...
Nuttall eventually said that "you never know, they may convert [to Islam] in their adulthood."

Lawyers for Korody and Nuttall are arguing that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police entrapped the pair through an elaborate, months-long undercover sting operation.

Israel approves new homes in settlement after demolishing two buildings
[REUTERS] Israel gave final approval on Wednesday for plans to build 300 new homes in a Jewish settlement in the occupied West Bank, announcing the move as it carried out a court demolition order against two vacant apartment blocks in the same enclave.

Dozens of Jewish settlers have gathered over the past several days at Beit El settlement to protest against the demolition. Israel's Supreme Court ruled the two partially built blocks had been constructed illegally on Paleostinian-owned land.

Live television footage from Beit El showed settlers, who had scuffled earlier with police at the site, watching an excavator tear into the buildings, but not intervening.

As payback for the demolition, ultra-nationalists in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's governing coalition had urged him to press ahead with a separate 300-home project slated for a different tract of land in the settlement.
They're getting thousands of immigrants from the rest of the world just now. All those people have to be put somewhere, and until there is an actual peace treaty with the Palestinians, according to international law Israel can build wherever they control. But of course the UN weighed in:

Terror Networks
Islamic State recruitment document seeks to provoke 'end of the world'
An apparent Islamic State recruitment document found in Pakistan's lawless tribal lands reveals that the extremist group has grand ambitions of building a new terrorist army in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and triggering a war in India to provoke an Armageddon-like "end of the world."

The 32-page Urdu-language document obtained by American Media Institute (AMI) and reviewed by USA TODAY details a plot to attack U.S. soldiers as they withdraw from Afghanistan and target American diplomats and Pakistani officials.

AMI obtained the document from a Pakistani citizen with connections inside the Pakistani Taliban and had it independently translated from Urdu by Harvard researcher and translator Mustafa Samdani. The Pakistani's identity was shared with USA TODAY, which has agreed not to identify him publicly because of concerns for his safety.

The document was reviewed by three U.S. intelligence officials, who said they believe the document is authentic based on its unique markings and the fact that language used to describe leaders, the writing style and religious wording match other documents from the Islamic State, also known as ISIL and ISIS. They asked to remain anonymous because they are not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

The undated document, titled "A Brief History of the Islamic State Caliphate (ISC), The Caliphate According to the Prophet," seeks to unite dozens of factions of the Pakistani and Afghan Taliban into a single army of terror. It includes a never-before-seen history of the Islamic State, details chilling future battle plans, urges al-Qaeda to join the group and says the Islamic State's leader should be recognized as the sole ruler of the world's 1 billion Muslims under a religious empire called a "caliphate."

"Accept the fact that this caliphate will survive and prosper until it takes over the entire world and beheads every last person that rebels against Allah," it proclaims. "This is the bitter truth, swallow it."

Retired Defense Intelligence Agency Director Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, who also reviewed the document, said it "represents the Islamic State's campaign plan and is something, as an intelligence officer, I would not only want to capture, but fully exploit. It lays out their intent, their goals and objectives, a red flag to which we must pay attention."

Alistair Baskey, deputy spokesman for the White House's National Security Council, told AMI, "we are aware of the presence of ISIL-affiliated militants in Afghanistan, and we are monitoring closely to see whether their emergence will have a meaningful impact on the threat environment in the region."

The Taliban is another radical Islamic group that ruled Afghanistan until ousted during the U.S. invasion in 2001. It continues fighting the current Afghan government and also trying to thwart the Islamic State's expansion into Afghanistan.

The document warns that "preparations" for an attack in India are underway and predicts that an attack will provoke an apocalyptic confrontation with America: "Even if the U.S tries to attack with all its allies, which undoubtedly it will, the ummah will be united, resulting in the final battle." The word "ummah" refers to the entire global community of Muslims.

Striking in India would magnify the Islamic State's stature and threaten the stability of the region, said Bruce Riedel, a senior fellow with the Brookings Institution who served more than 30 years in the CIA. "Attacking in India is the Holy Grail of South Asian jihadists."

Pakistan Foreign Secretary Aizaz Chaudhry said the Islamic State threat in Pakistan was discussed with White House, State Department and Pentagon officials in June. He told reporters at the Pakistani Embassy in June that successful allied military operations have scattered the Pakistani Taliban.

Chaudhry denied there is an Islamic State presence in Pakistan. It could be "a potential threat for the whole world, for our region too, for our country too," he said. "We believe that all countries need to cooperate, and Pakistan, yes."

Unlike al-Qaeda, which has targeted terror attacks on the United States and other western nations, the document said Islamic State leaders believe that's the wrong strategic goal. "Instead of wasting energy in a direct confrontation with the U.S., we should focus on an armed uprising in the Arab world for the establishment of the caliphate," the document said.

So far, the U.S. strategy has been limited to fighting the militant group in Iraq and Syria, ordering limited airstrikes and deploying trainers to strengthen Iraqi security forces.

Meanwhile, the Islamic State has recruited tens of thousands of fighters and sympathizers from around the world.

The failure to target the radical Islamic ideas behind the group has given its fighters the opportunity to spread, Flynn said. "If I were in their shoes, I would say,'We are winning, we are achieving our objectives,'" Flynn said. "They have demonstrated an incredible level of resiliency and they will not be defeated by military means alone."
