Afghanistan Taliban Kill 25 pro-Government Militiamen
[ALMANAR.LB] At least 25 people, including 22 members of an anti-Taliban militia force and three Afghan tribal elders have been killed in an attack carried out by the Taliban in northwestern Faryab province, Afghan officials said on Friday.

According to the deputy of a government-run provincial council in the area, Tahir Rahmani, Afghan Talibs killed 25 bandidos Death Eaters after an hours-long clash in Shirin Tagab district's Astana Baba locality.

Only a few days back, Afghan Vice President General Abdul Rasheed Dostum
...ethnic Uzbek warlord who distinguished himself fighting the Soviets and the Taliban. The story that he had a bad guy run over with a tank is an exaggeration. It was an armored personnel carrier...
had defeated Taliban in the area and handed it over to a pro-government forces.

Provincial police chief General Sobhan Qul confirmed the corpse count in the incident and said that the local forces had launched the operation without coordinating with provincial police.

Dostum, who is said to be personally leading an anti-Taliban operation, had freed over 100 villages from Taliban control in Faryab that left about 300 local and foreign Death Eaters reportedly dead; some 400 others have also reportedly surrendered their weapons in the last one month.

After Faryab province, Dostum headed to neighboring Sri Pul province, where he reportedly defeated Taliban in Kohistan

at district on Friday.

According to Kohistanat district chief, Tajuddin Mlikzada, Afghan forces reclaimed control of the district from Taliban on Friday without facing any resistance.

"Talibs have left the area after General Dostum arrived along with some 2,000 soldiers in Sari Pul province," Malikzada told Anadolu Agency.

province, Taliban occupied Musa Qala district on Wednesday following fierce fighting. At least 25-30 Afghan cops bit the dust in the fight, an Afghan official said, but local officials confirmed only half that number.

Musa Qala, once home to hundreds of British and US troops, has been one of the most troubled areas in Helmand province. More than 20 British and U.S. troops bit the dust in the district before they abandoned it in 2010.

Kabul police say blasts were controlled detonations
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] Two big booms were heard in the eastern part of Kabul
...the capital of Afghanistan. Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the World and didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either....
city on Saturday afternoon.

The blasts spread panic in police districts eight and nine for few moments but Kabul police say they were controlled detonations.

The kabooms were reportedly collected by a de-mining company and blasted in the area.

This comes as Kabul residents are still in shock from the recent suicide kabooms in the city that left dozens of people killed and hundreds of others maimed.

Last Saturday a jacket wallah targeted a vehicle of foreigners in Macroryan 4 area leaving 12 people, including 3 US contractors, killed and around 80 others maimed.

Also, two separate suicide kaboom and a krazed killer attack left at least 50 people killed and over 400 others maimed in the first week of this month.

At least 250 militants killed by AMISOM in August
Two hundred and fifty al Shabaab fighters were killed by Amisom troops in Somalia in August alone during “Operation Juba Corridor”.

“This has gone to further incapacitate the insurgent group’s ability to cause terror to Somalia citizens and those in neighbouring countries,” a Kenyan security official said.

Amisom troops from Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, Burundi and Djibouti have been pushing the Salafist jihadists of the Harakat al Shabaab al-Mujahideen out of territories they have been controlling for years. Ten al Shabaab corporals senior commanders are among those killed this month.

Amisom scaled up operations against the militia and made significant gains throughout August.

Military court sentence 5 Muslim Brotherhood members to 15 years in jail
[AlAhram] An Alexandria military court sentenced five Moslem Brüderbund members to 15 years in jail for bombing railway tracks in Beheira governorate, reported Ahram Arabic website on Sunday.

The prosecution had accused the defendants of several charges including the bombing of the railways, sabotaging a public facility and endangering people's lives.

On 5 January 2015 the Cairo-Alexandria railway was bombed at a village close to the city of Damnhur in Beheira governorate, in the Nile Delta region.

Hundreds of civilian cases have been referred to military court since the 2011 uprising that toppled veteran strongman Hosni Mubarak
...The former President-for-Life of Egypt, dumped by popular demand in early 2011...
. The practice has faced strong opposition from rights campaigners and pro-democracy advocates.

The Moslem Brüderbund was designated a terrorist organization in 2013, though they claim they are committed to peaceful activism.

Hundreds of the groups' members have been killed and thousands put in jail following the ousting of Brotherhood president Mohammed Morsi in 2013.

(IS) group, according to judicial sources.

The 16, all from Egypt's Sharqiya governorate, are accused of forming a terrorist cell linked to IS and headed by the former policeman, attempting to overthrow the regime, and recruit Egyptian youth to the Death Eater group.

The case was referred to one of the court's terrorism districts, created by Egypt's new terrorism law to give priority to terrorism-related cases over others.

Egypt's judicial system is overloaded with pending trials. Any given case can take years for a final verdict.

The former policeman accused in the case is Helmi Mohammed Hashem and is alledgedly in contact with the leader of Islamic State, Abu Bakr El-Baghdadi.

Egypt has been fighting a Death Eater insurgency in North Sinai for a decade. Recently, Death Eater attacks, mostly claimed by IS affiliate Ansar Beit El-Maqdis (also known as Sinai Province), reached other governorates, including the capital.

IS beheading siege in Derna ends in deaths of two children
[Libya Herald] A member of Derna's mujahideen who tried to talk into surrendering a friend who was a supporter of the Islamic State

(IS) was beheaded by him today and had his head thrown into the street. Three locals also died, two of them children, in the siege this afternoon that followed the killing.

Events are reported to have started have when the supporter, named as Abdulkarim Badr, fed up with hiding at home since the mujahideen took over the town in June, went on a rampage, shooting into the air. Neighbours alerted the mujahideen, nine of whose members then laid siege to the Badr's home.

According to a source in Derna, one of the mujadideen, Shadi Al-Ghazanni, offered to mediate with Badr, whom he knew. This was agreed but shortly after he went into the house, his severed head was thrown out of the window. This was followed by a shootout in which Badr then threw an explosive out of the window killing two children and an elderly man, watching the events.

The other mujahideen are then said to have attacked the house, killing Badr.

Arabia
Coalition Pounds Yemen Rebels, Sets Sights on Capital
[AnNahar] Warplanes from the Saudi-led coalition hit Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
rebel positions Saturday as reinforcements reached pro-government forces preparing for an anticipated advance towards the capital, military sources said.

Apache helicopters struck a base occupied by rebel forces near Bayhan, in the southern province of Shabwa, hours after fighter jets targeted a convoy of the Iran-backed Houthis in the area, a military source said.

Warplanes also pounded arms depots in the rebel-held capital Sanaa, according to witnesses.

Bayhan borders the eastern province of Marib, where military reinforcements have arrived from neighbouring Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
to bolster forces loyal to exiled President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi, military sources said.

Armoured vehicles have crossed the Wadia border point in Hadramawt province, heading to Marib, where loyalists are preparing a large offensive, a military official told Agence La Belle France Presse.

The coalition has also deployed eight Apache helicopters that will be based at the Safir oil fields, the official said.

The operation, aimed at driving the Huthis out of Marib and pushing west towards the capital, will begin in the next few days, the official said requesting anonymity.

Bolstered by coalition air power and newly trained troops, Hadi loyalists have driven rebels out of Yemen's second city Aden and four other southern provinces and are now fighting for control of the third city of Taez.

#1  How does one say 'hubris' in Arabic? The Houthi Shiites, perhaps drunk on khat and feeling that Iran had the Sunni World by the balls, decided to go on a rampage. The end result will be the elimination of the Shiite community in Sanaa and the further impoverishment of the Houthi homeland and the leveling of Houthi towns to the north.

PKK claims 42 fighters, 417 Turkish forces, killed in recent clashes
[Rudaw] The armed wing of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) released its corpse count from the recent festivities with Turkish government forces, claiming they killed 417 Turkish soldiers and coppers and lost 42 fighters in skirmishes and air raids.

The PKK's People's Defence Forces, also known as HPG, said in a statement released Friday that, since the outbreak of the July 24 festivities, the Turkish government launched 62 offensives against the group and in return HPG launched 191 offensives inside the country.

Turkish officials released different numbers for casualties. Ankara claimed Turkish security forces had killed 814 PKK fighters, mainly in air attacks in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
also confirmed that 60 soldiers and coppers were killed by the PKK.

The Turkish government reignited a war with the PKK after the rebels grabbed credit for the deaths of two army officers in late July. The fighting has ended a 2013 ceasefire that was meant to resolve a three-decade conflict in which some 40,000 people have been killed.

#4  One other thing to add - of those civilians, the majority were killed by Turks. But the PKK did some as well - prior to Ocalan's change of heart, they were typical bloody Marxists, not above killing their own to generate controversy that they could then exploit. The PKK arent choirboys - some of them are tustworthy, but you really need to put in the leg work to find out which ones are. Since OIF, we abandoned a lot of the covert stuff in the Kurdish region -- due to politics to retain a central Iraq government at first, and now to keep from offending the Turks and Iranians who have significant Kurdish majority areas contiguous to defacto Kurdistan (Iraq).

That was a mistake, because we no longer have the field operations in place, nor the people, nor the leadership that is capable of developing the area. Just look at those pathetic attempts to make a "Syrian Opposition" as an example.

Blame for this goes to both Bush and Obama - but mainly Erdogan and his pressure and backstab during OIF-I.

Three Turkish police officers killed in PKK attacks
[Hurriyet Daily News] Three Turkish coppers were killed, 11 coppers and 14 civilians were maimed late Aug. 28 in three separate attacks in the eastern province of Tunceli and the southeastern provinces of Sanliurfa and Mardin by suspected members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

In Sanliurfa, unknown assailants opened fire on a police car leaving the emergency room of the Balikligöl State Hospital. Two coppers inside the car were severely injured, and they later died at the hospital despite all efforts of the doctors.

In the Nazimiye district of Tunceli, a group of suspected PKK holy warriors attacked the police headquarters with heavy weapons and rocket launchers late Aug. 28. During the attack, three coppers were maimed and two PKK holy warriors were killed. One of the injured coppers departed this vale of tears hours later.

In the southeastern province of Mardin Kiziltepe district, the holy warriors fired a rocket on a police shuttle carrying 25 officers. The rocket missed the bus and hit metal barrels in a shop on the street filled with diesel fuel. The kaboom and the ensuing fire injured nine coppers and 14 civilians, while also damaging the surrounding buildings.

The tensions in the country's southeast have been running high since the PKK started launching attacks on the security personnel and anti-terrorism operations were launched in July.

A senior police officer told Dawn that a tip was received by authorities that individuals from a foreign intelligence agency were hiding in the area and were involved in terrorist activities.

The official said the search operation found five Afghan nationals without documentation, who have been taken into custody by intelligence agencies and shifted to some holy man's guesthouse an undisclosed location.

Rawat police Station House Officer (SHO) Muhammad Asif confirmed that a joint search operation had taken place.

Asif said that the operation was conducted against forces of Evil and criminals involved in anti-state activities. However,

he added that the Afghan nationals arrested were ordinary men who kept cattle in the area but failed to provide documentation.

"We have given them 24 hours to prove their identity, with Computerised National Identity Cards (CNIC) if they are Pak, or documents from Afghanistan," he said.

Sindh to refer eight more terrorism cases to military courts
[DAWN] The provincial government of Sindh on Saturday decided to refer eight terrorism cases to the military courts, in line with actions taken under the National Action Plan (NAP).

Under NAP, 18 bully boyz have been executed, while black warrants issued for the execution of another four bully boyz have been stayed by courts.

Iraq
Champ regime Not Targeting ISIS Training Camps
[PJ Media] Training camps turning out thousands of Islamic State fighters a month are not being targeted by the Pentagon because of the potential collateral damage.

Bill Gertz of the Washington Free Beacon reports that defense and intelligence officials question the Obama administration's commitment to destroying ISIS. "If we know the location of these camps, and the president wants to destroy ISIS, why are the camps still functioning?" one official critical of the policy asked.

The camps are regarded by U.S. intelligence analysts as a key element in the terror group's successes in holding and taking new territory. The main benefit of the training camps is that they are providing a continuous supply of new fighters.

An additional worry of intelligence analysts is that some of the foreign fighters being trained in the camps will eventually return to their home countries in Europe and North America to carry out terror attacks.

A White House spokesman declined to comment on the failure to bomb the terror camps and referred questions to the Pentagon.
The White House does not see it as a "failure" but rather a goal.
Pentagon spokesman Maj. Roger M. Cabiness declined to say why no training camps have been bombed. "I am not going to be able to go into detail about our targeting process," he said.
Rightfully so Maj. Cabiness, as the "process" does not belong to the military does it ?
Cabiness said the U.S.-led coalition has "hit ISIL [an alternative abbreviation for the Islamic State] with more than 6,000 airstrikes."

"The coalition has also taken out thousands of fighting positions, tanks, vehicles, bomb factories, and training camps," he said. "We have also stuck their leadership, including most recently on Aug. 18 when a U.S. military airstrike removed Fadhil Ahmad al-Hayali, also known as Hajji Mutazz, the second in command of the terrorist group, from the battlefield."

Efforts also are being taken to disrupt IS finances and "make it more difficult for the group to attract new foreign fighters," Cabiness said in an email.

A Central Command spokesman also declined to provide details of what he said were "operational engagements" against IS training camps.

"Once a target is identified as performing a hostile act, or is part of an obvious hostile force, a training camp for example, we prosecute that target in accordance with the coalition rules of engagement and the law of armed conflict," the spokesman said.

According to the defense and intelligence officials, one reason the training camps have been off limits is that political leaders in the White House and Pentagon fear hitting them will cause collateral damage. Some of the camps are located near civilian facilities and there are concerns that casualties will inspire more jihadists to join the group.
The 'collateral damage' argument is a non sequitur. They're killing one another by the tens of thousands. The regime has undertaken an 'eaches' key leader, neutralization and harassment campaign, not a military campaign directed toward ultimate victory.
However, military officials have argued that unless the training camps are knocked out, IS will continue to gain ground and recruit and train more fighters for its operations.
"Military officials argue"..... argue with whom? Certainly not the leadership. They know they don't have a vote in this process.
What's the difference in the number of fighters that will join ISIS if we bomb the camps or don't bomb the camps? On the one hand, we might anger a few jihadists because we kill a few civilians. On the other hand, ISIS military campaigns meeting with success because we don't bomb the camps attract large numbers of fighters as well. I would bet the difference is negligible, which leaves the desire to avoid civilian casualties as the number one reason we're not bombing the camps.

In nearby Yemen, Saudi Arabia is killing civilians by the bushelful, as is the Syrian government and Iran through their proxy Hezb'allah. Modern war guarantees dead civilians. The question isn't whether civilians die, it's whether you deliberately target them that creates the moral dilemma.

I guess it depends whether you see the war against Islamic State as a battle to save western civilization or not. If you approach the conflict as trying to rid the world of a nuisance, you might hesitate to risk civilian casualties.

But if you think your future is at stake, it's a no brainer.

#10  WTF? ISIS isn't a threat to us. We'd be better off with them out of the picture, but saving ourselves? That's not even in the picture. Who writes this stuff? Who believes it?

It is a threat, but only because of (1) the refugees they create and (2) our PC insistence on admitting said refugees due to ISIS persecution and genocide. No ISIS, no humanitarian need to admit Muslim refugees.

#14  The notion that collateral damage helps recruitment has no validity at all. In WW2 there was plenty of collateral damage in Germany and Japan, and that only made potential sufferers from same wishing that the targets would go away.
It is hard to envision the motivation of an individual who would go to a training camp merely because it may be bombed.
I recall a bold attempt to bomb Gestapo headquarters in Copenhagen during WW2. It failed and a school full of Danish children was hit instead. The Danes did not blame the US it. They blamed the Nazis.

of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) murderous Moslems detained at least 70 people in a remote western Iraqi town on Saturday following a rare street demonstration protesting the myrmidon group's execution of a local resident, security officials said.

They said the protest by hundreds of residents in Rutbah, in Anbar province, was triggered by the execution earlier on Saturday of Munir al-Kobeisi, a civil servant, for killing a member of the myrmidon group. The killing was part of a long-running blood feud between two local clans.

Eid Amash, a front man for Anbar's provincial government, confirmed al-Kobeisi's execution and the subsequent protest. Officials said they did not know the whereabouts of the detained residents.

Elsewhere in Anbar, much of which is under ISIS control, a roadside kaboom on Saturday hit a border guard convoy making its way to the border crossing of Trebil on the Jordanian border, security officials said.

Five officers were killed in the attack, which bore the hallmarks of the ISIS group, whose murderous Moslems are active in the area near the Jordanian and Syrian borders in western Iraq.

The officials also said a pair of roadside kabooms killed five people and injured 19 south and west of Baghdad on Saturday. Also in the capital, assailants using pistols fitted with silencers killed two people in the Jihad neighborhood in western Baghdad before they fled in a car. Other details were not immediately available.

All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Junaid Hussain of Birmingham, England, was killed on Aug. 24 by a US military air strike on the Islamic State stronghold of Raqqah, said Air Force Colonel Pat Ryder, a front man for US Central Command.

Hussain had been involved in "actively recruiting ISIL sympathizers in the west to carry out 'lone wolf' style attacks," Ryder said, using an acronym for the bad boy group that has seized large parts of Syria and Iraq.

Hussain was responsible for releasing personal information of around 1,300 US military and babus government employees in recent weeks, and "sought to encourage" attacks against them, US officials said.

Local Syrian ceasefires break down as shelling resumes
[Hurriyet Daily News] A ceasefire in a Syrian town near the Lebanese border and in two villages to the north has broken down after renewed heavy shelling, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said on Aug. 29.

The truce between the Syrian army and the Lebanese group Hezbollah on the one side, and Syrian turbans on the other, came into effect on Aug. 27 in the western town of Zabadani and the Shiite Moslem villages of Kefraya and al-Foua in the northwest.

Local ceasefires in Syria's four-year conflict have tended to be fragile, and U.N. attempts to forge larger truces in other parts of the country, notably in the northern city of Aleppo, have come to nothing.

The ceasefire in the three areas had been extended late on Aug. 28 but had collapsed by the morning, said Rami Abdulrahman, who runs the Britannia-based Observatory.

Insurgents fired around 200 shells into areas in and around Kefraya and al-Foua early on Aug. 29, and Syrian warplanes carried out raids elsewhere in the province, he said.

Sources on both sides said talks were continuing despite the ceasefire breach. The negotiations on the rebel side have been led by the Islamist Ahrar al-Sham

group.

The sides had discussed evacuating the maimed from the three areas under the ceasefire but so far none have been transported out, the Observatory said.

Zabadani has been at the center an offensive by Hezbollah and the Syrian army against hard boy groups. The area is important to the Syrian government because of its proximity to the capital Damascus and the Lebanese border.

The two villages, in the province of Idlib, have been under attack by hard boys. The area borders The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

and is mostly rebel-controlled after advances against the military this year.

Turkish planes hit Daesh in Syria with coalition for first time
Turkish planes have for the first time joined raids by the US-led coalition against Daesh positions in Syria, the Turkish foreign ministry said on Saturday.
Whose side were they on?
"Our fighter planes ... along with planes from the coalition yesterday evening began joint operations against targets which pose a threat to the security of our country," it said in a statement.

US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter last week called on Turkey to play a full part in the US-led air campaign against the Daesh group and take better control of its border with Syria. He said Ankara had agreed in principle to join the anti-Daesh coalition but should add its own warplanes to the "air tasking order," the military structure coordinating strikes.

"They need to join the ATO (Air Tasking Order) and they need to work more on controlling their border. And we've made that clear," he said. "Their leadership has indicated that this needs to be done. It's overdue, because it's a year into the campaign, but they're indicating some considerable effort now."

Turkey agreed last month to step up its involvement in the war raging across its southern border in Syria and to allow US planes to launch strikes from a Turkish base. But its involvement in the battle against the Daesh group had been limited and it appeared to be concentrating exclusively on its recently revived war with Kurdish separatist militants.
First things first...
