Brother of human rights activist Farida Allaghi survives Tripoli attack, friend slain
[Libya Herald] The brother of Abdulla Al-Thinni's nominee for the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs survived an liquidation attempt yesterday in Tripoli

Armed attacker ambushed Mahmoud Allaghi in a Tripoli street. He is the brother of rights activist and cabinet nominee Farida Allaghi. A friend who was with Allaghi was killed, but Allaghi himself managed to escape unharmed.

Until now Tripoli has been a relative stranger to the politically motivated liquidations that have gripped Benghazi. Last month Mohammed Al-Suwaisi, head of Tripoli Security Directorate, was murdered in Tajoura.

Libya Ex-Air Force Chief Murdered in Benghazi
[AnNahar] A former Libyan air force chief was rubbed out overnight in the country's violence-ridden second city of Benghazi, medical and army sources said on Thursday.

"Unidentified gunnies killed former air force chief of staff general Ahmed Habib al-Mesmari in the Al-Hadaek district" in the city center, a senior air base officer in Benghazi told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
Mesmari stood down as air force chief of staff in April after attending a meeting with renegade general Khalifa Haftar
... served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all...

accused of staging a coup d'etat.

A hospital source in Benghazi said he had been "hit by several bullets".

Since dictator Muammar Qadaffy
...who single-handedly turned a moderately prosperous kingdom into a dictator's fantasyland and was then murdered by his indignant subjects 42 years later...
's regime was ousted in 2011, dozens of military figures have been assassinated in Benghazi.

For several months, the city has seen festivities between army forces loyal to Haftar and Islamist militias, including Ansar al-Sharia
...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Libyaand Yemen, with the Libyan versions currently most active. Tunisia's Shabaab al-Tawhid started out an Ansar al-Sharia and changed its name in early 2014. It still uses the old name now and then, probably because the stationery's not all used up and the web site hasn't expired yet...
jihadists.

The Libyan authorities and the United States consider Ansar al-Sharia to be a "terrorist" group.

On May 16, Haftar's forces launched an offensive against the jihadists in Benghazi, but his campaign has not been a success.

On Wednesday, the Islamists launched another assault on Benghazi airport, Haftar's final redoubt.

There has been almost daily fighting between Haftar's forces and the militias, which now control nearly all of Benghazi, the cradle of the 2011 uprising.

Arabia
14 Bahraini Shiites Given Life Terms for Bombing
[AnNahar] A Bahrain court on Thursday sentenced 14 Shiites to life in prison after convicting them of attacking police with explosives during an anti-regime protest, a judicial source said.

The Gulf kingdom's prosecution service had accused the group of attempted murder of coppers using petrol bombs and explosives, and taking part in an unauthorized protest.

In the May 29, 2013 attack, an improvised device went kaboom! as police tried to extinguish tires set alight by demonstrators in the Shiite village of Bani Jamra outside the capital Manama, the judicial source said.

Several coppers were maimed, some seriously.

Dozens of Bahraini Shiites have been handed down lengthy prison terms after being convicted of involvement in violent protests.

Bahrain has been rocked since February 2011 by protests by the Shiite majority against the ruling Sunni Moslem Al-Khalifa dynasty.

Last year, the authorities stiffened penalties for those convicted of committing acts of violence, introducing the death penalty or life in jail for incidents in which there were dead or maimed.

Armed Shiite rebels push into Sanaa
[ARABNEWS] Armed Iranian catspaws pushed into Yemen's capital Sanaa after clashing with the army in the city's northwest outskirts on Thursday, security sources and residents said, in an escalation of weeks of fighting and protests.

Residents of northwest Al-Shamlan district told Rooters the Shiite Huthi gunnies were now advancing along Thalatheen Street, a major route into the western edge of the city.

The fighting has further destabilized an impoverished country also struggling to overcome a secessionist movement in its south, the spread of an Al-Qaeda insurgency and other threats.

Seven militants gunned down in Sohrab Goth 'encounter'
[DAWN] KARACHI: Seven alleged gunnies were rubbed out in an 'encounter' with police in a Sohrab Goth locality on Wednesday, officials said.

They added that acting on a tip-off about the presence of suspected gunnies in Machhar Colony, a large contingent of police conducted a raid in the area.

Apart from the district Malir police, 200 commandoes from the Razzakabad police training centre were also called in for support.

As they started a search operation in the area, the law enforcement officials came under attack by the alleged bully boys, the officials said.

During the half-an-hour-long exchange of fire, seven alleged gunnies were killed, Malir SSP Rao Anwar said. During the exchange of gunfire Sohrab Goth SHO Ismail Lashari was slightly maimed as a bullet grazed his leg, the SSP added.

An kaboom caused by a 'tennis ball bomb' also occurred in which a woman was injured, the officials added.

A Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre official told Dawn that three young passers-by -- Zakiullah, 13-year-old SLearned Elders of Islamn Khan and 20-year-old Yousuf Khan -- who had been maimed in the crossfire were brought to the hospital.

The condition of Zakiullah, who sustained injuries in his abdomen, was stated to be critical.

Two of the maimed teenagers said they received bullet wounds in the crossfire when they were standing outside their seminary in the area. Zakiullah was not in a position to speak, the officials said.

The Malir SSP said that the raid was conducted on secret information about the presence of 10 suspected bully boys, but three of them managed to escape.

The identity of the dear departed aged between mid-20s and 60 could not be ascertained immediately.

The police claimed that they belonged to the banned Tahreek-e-Taliban Pakistain (Wali Rehman group) and were wanted in assassinations and other criminal cases.

"The dear departed men were members of the TTP, and were involved in killing of security personnel in Wazoo," claimed the SSP.

He added that they were also involved in assassinations of coppers and others, kidnapping for ransom and extortion activities in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
.

Meanwhile,
...back at the shouting match, the spittle had reached unprecedented levels...
AIG of Karachi Ghulam Qadir Thebo told Dawn that the raid was carried out over information about arrival of gunnies from North Waziristan following the military operation there.

He claimed that the dear departed belonged to the Mehsud tribe, who were allegedly involved in beheading of military personnel and other criminal activities there.

Explosive material and chemicals that could trigger off fire were also seized during the raid.

The police claimed to have seized two hand grenades, six TT pistols, a rifle and other arms and ammunition from the possession of the dear departed.

Sources at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where the seven bodies were taken, said that all the men had been rubbed out from a very close range appeared to be from the distance of "four to five feet". They all sustained five to seven bullet wounds, they added.

One deceased was aged between 55 and 60 years while a jaw of another man who was in his 40s was badly broken due to gunshot wounds. Two men were in mid-20s with French beards, the sources added.

"In total, one air strike near an ISIL (Islamic State group) training camp southeast of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
destroyed an ISIL armed vehicle, two ISIL-occupied buildings and a large ISIL ground unit," the U.S. Central Command, which oversees American forces in the Middle East, said in a statement.

It was the first time U.S. aircraft had targeted a training camp since the air campaign began on August 8, a U.S. military officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Agence La Belle France-Presse.

A second air raid damaged an IS ammunition depot southeast of Baghdad, Central Command said.

The air strikes, which involved both bombers and fighter jets, took place over the past 24 hours and "all aircraft exited the strike areas safely," it said.

U.S. warplanes have conducted 176 air strikes against the Sunni forces of Evil since August 8, mostly in northern Iraq.

France to join US air war against jihadists in Iraq
[Al Ahram] La Belle France said Thursday that it will follow the United States in launching air strikes against the Islamic State group in Iraq, as the jihadists posted their latest video of a Western hostage.

But unlike in previous grisly postings by IS in which they beheaded two American journalists and a British aid worker, British photojournalist John Cantlie was only shown speaking to camera in the style of a news report.

The French move came as Washington was set to approve plans to train and arm Syrian rebels in the fight against IS, which has gained more ground in recent days. President Francois Hollande
...the Socialist president of La Belle France, an economic bad joke for la Belle France but seemingly a foreign policy realist...
underlined that there would be no French air strikes against IS targets in Syria like those that his US counterpart Barack Obama

authorised last week.

"I decided to respond to the request of the Iraqi authorities to offer aerial support," Hollande told news hounds.

"We will not go further than that. There will be no ground troops and we will only intervene in Iraq."

The US has carried out 174 air strikes against IS in Iraq since early August, and Obama last week authorised their expansion to neighbouring Syria.

La Belle France began reconnaissance flights over Iraq on Monday from a base in the United Arab Emirates.

Britannia too has conducted surveillance flights but has so far held back from launching strikes.

The US Senate was expected to back a plan, approved by the House of Representatives on Wednesday, to train and equip anti-jihadist rebels in Syria, a key part of Obama's strategy against IS. Who exactly will benefit from the programme is unclear, as the rebels battling Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Horror of Homs...
lack a clear command structure and range from secular nationalists to Al-Qaeda-backed bad boys.

But Obama hailed the House approval as "an important step forward", and Senate leaders are confident it will pass Thursday for his signature.

Obama met military commanders on Wednesday and, in a speech at MacDill Air Force Base in Florida, insisted the jihadists will be defeated.

"Our reach is long. If you threaten America, you will find no safe haven. We will find you eventually," Obama said, also standing firm on his pledge that a US ground combat mission is not on the cards.

IS posted a new video on YouTube showing Cantlie in an orange jumpsuit like those worn by the hostages in the previous postings, but with no immediate threat to execute him. In the footage, Cantlie promises to reveal in a series of programmes the "truth" about the jihadist group.

Cantlie, who had contributed to British newspapers including The Sunday Times and Sunday Telegraph, as well as to Agence La Belle France-Presse, said he was captured after travelling to Syria in November 2012. He had previously been detained along with a Dutch photographer by hard boyz in Syria in July 2012 but was reportedly released after nine days.

It was not clear when the video was shot, but in it Cantlie referred to recent events including the US-led campaign against IS.

In Syria, IS fighters were closing in on the country's third-largest Kurdish town of Ain al-Arab, or Kobane, on the Turkish border, cutting off its Kurdish militia defenders, a monitoring group said.

"IS fighters have seized at least 21 villages around Kobane," Syrian Observatory for Human Rights head Rami Abdel Rahman said. "The IS is using heavy weaponry, its artillery and tanks."

The town is one of three Kurdish majority districts where Kurdish nationalists have proclaimed self-rule and its capture would give the jihadists control of a large swathe of the Turkish border.

The exiled opposition National Coalition warned of "the danger of a massacre" in the area, where Kurdish militia have put up dogged resistance to the jihadists.

The US estimates that IS has 20,000 to 31,000 fighters, including many foreigners, and there are concerns that returning jihadists could carry out attacks in Western countries.

Australia said it had detained 15 people in connection with a plot to behead random civilians, in the country's largest ever counter-terrorism raids.

But analysts at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) warned against overestimating the IS threat, saying that Al-Qaeda's global network was still the bigger danger worldwide.

"Despite its spectacular acts of violence, including against Westerners, (IS's) short- and medium-term objectives appear to be local and transnational rather than global," the London-based think-tank said.

Analyst Emile Hokayem told a news conference: "We shouldn't exaggerate its potency. It is a very serious security threat to the region -- as a global threat it's still limited."

Three Car Bombs, Mortars Kill 23 In Shi'ite Baghdad Districts
[Ynet] Three boom-mobiles were detonated in adjacent Shi'ite Baghdad neighbourhoods on Thursday followed by a dozen mortar rounds, killing at least 23 people and wounding more than 50, security and medical sources said.

Two of the bombs hit Kadhimiya and one hit the adjacent district of Tobcha, the security sources said. A mortar landed near the site of a major Shi'ite shrine in Kadhimiya and gunfire was heard in the district, they said.

Bombs hit the capital on a near-daily basis but coordinated attacks of this scale have been rare in the last several weeks. Mortar rounds have a short range compared to rockets, indicating the assailants fired from near the districts.

Border Guard Thwart Jerusalem Terror Attack
[Ynet] Pickaxe found hidden in suspects clothing; Paleostinian says he was planning to attack a soldier in Jerusalem.

Israel Border Police tossed in the slammer
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
a Paleostinian man early Thursday morning who claimed that he had planned to attack a soldier in Jerusalem. Police found a pickaxe among the 29-year-old's belongings and he was handed over for further investigations.
It occurs to me that if the family gets a pension from the PA while our man is imprisoned for attempting to kill Jews, then it might be the jail term rather than the murder that is at least sometimes the goal.
At approximately 4am the man from Bethlehem approached the tunnel passage near Beit Jala where border police ordered him to stop as the tunnel is strictly for vehicle traffic and not for pedestrians.

Police became more suspicious as they approached as saw that the Paleostinian carried a sealed bag and had a bulge in his clothing.

The guards arrested the man according to procedure when sighting a person who they judge as possibly planning an attack. They searched the man and found that the pickaxe was concealed within his clothing causing the bulge they had seen from afar.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
IS Jihadists Close in on Syria Kurd Town
[AnNahar] Jihadists from the Islamic State group using heavy weapons have seized a string of villages around Ain al-Arab as they close in on Syria's third largest Kurdish town, a monitor said Thursday.

"In the past 24 hours, IS fighters have launched a huge offensive and seized at least 16 villages to the east and west of Kobane," said Syrian Observatory for Human Rights head Rami Abdel Rahman, using the Kurdish name for Ain al-Arab.

"The IS is using heavy weaponry, its artillery and tanks," he said, adding that thousands of Kurdish fighters defending the town on the Turkish border were being encircled in a "pincer movement".

Kobane is Syria's third largest Kurdish town after Qamishli and Afrine. Its capture would allow the jihadists to control a long stretch of the Syrian-Turkish border.

Abdel Rahman said the latest IS offensive was larger than an assault in July that was repelled by the Kurds backed by hundreds of fellow Kurdish fighters who crossed from Turkey as reinforcements.

In the thick of Syria's anti-regime uprising, the Kurds have established a semi-autonomous status in the Kurdish-inhabited regions of the country's northeast, clashing repeatedly with the IS to defend their territory since the jihadists made their entry into the conflict in the spring of 2013.
Ynet adds:
Syrian Kurds plead for help to repel Islamic State advance

Syrian Kurdish fighters have appealed to other Kurdish parties in the region for military aid to repel an advance by Islamic State fighters in northern Syria near the Turkish border, a Kurdish military official said on Thursday.

Ocalan Iso, deputy commander of Kurdish forces in Kobani, told Reuters the Kurds were seeking support from other groups including the Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) to fend off the advance by Islamic State. Speaking via Skype, he said they wanted support "in all military aspects".
And this:
Militant gains illustrate plight of Syrian Kurds

Islamic State gains highlighted the plight of Syria's Kurds, who have been some of the most successful against the Islamic extremists. But unlike US-backed Iraqi Kurds, they seem largely on their own in a devastated country where the enemy's enemy is not necessarily a friend.

The main Kurdish force in Syria, known as the People's Protection Units or YPK, is viewed with suspicion by mainstream Syrian rebels and their Western supporters because of perceived links to President Bashar Assad's government.
