#15  On Friday, participants were working out how to react to a local farmer's request for compensation after his cattle had been killed stepping on a land mine.

A team of “reporters” even wrote stories and aired broadcasts on the mock World News Network, providing more fodder for responses to the scenario. Participants watched the mock broadcasts, which included a reporter doing a stand-up in the Camp Edwards training area as well as file footage.

Saturday was to be a day free from the exercises, giving participants a chance to visit Cape beaches and be treated to a traditional lobster boil back on the base, Harrington said.
That's the day the three Afghan men went missing.

I'm not eating those spiders! Yuk!

Lt. Col. Thomas Stewart, the Guard's commander of the exercise, said Friday he's already learned a valuable lesson from his fellow commanders.

During one scenario, several generators were broken down. Stewart's first inclination was to send in a new supply, but Afghanistan Maj. Yama Akramyar convinced him that perhaps sending in a trained maintenance man would be a better solution.

“I should have thought of that,” Stewart said. “I've learned that what I may do may be different than what my counterparts would do. That's an education in itself.”

If I had to sit through that BS, I'd be outta there, too.

Arabia
Fighting rages in Yemen capital despite UN talk of deal
Fighting raged in the Yemeni capital on Sunday despite an announcement by the UN envoy that pro-government forces and Shia rebels were poised to sign a deal.
All the UN ever does is talk. Why should that stop a good fight?
The shelling and gunfire in the north of Sanaa was heard across the capital, as Sunni militiamen battled the rebels prompting an exodus of terrified residents, an AFP correspondent reported.

A week of fighting between the two sides has left dozens of people dead and forced the suspension of all flights into or out of Sanaa airport, which lies within the battle zone.

There was no let-up in the fighting during the night despite an after-dark curfew ordered by President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi. The fighting centred on the campus of Al Iman University, a bastion of Sunnis that the Shia rebels have been trying to capture, witnesses said.

It came despite the announcement by UN envoy Jamal Benomar late on Saturday that a deal had been reached after “intense consultations with all the political parties, including (rebel movement) Ansarullah.”

Benomar did not specifically mention a ceasefire nor did he say when the deal would be signed, although he said preparations were under way for the signing.
Sometime after one of the sides wins out...
He said the accord will be a “national document that will advance the path of peaceful change, and will lay the foundations for national partnership and for security and stability in the country”.
Unlike all the previous paths for national partnership and inclusion in Yemen...
He said he regretted the continuing bloodshed and reiterated that the “time has now come to overcome narrow interests and that the higher national interest should prevail”.

Forces allied to the government have been battling to halt the rebels, who swept into Sanaa from their mountain stronghold in the far north last month and set up armed protest camps across the capital to press their demands.

Hadi has called the rebel offensive a “coup attempt”. He has agreed to involve the rebels in the formation of a new government to replace the unpopular administration that imposed austerity measures, including a fuel price hike, earlier this year. He has also agreed to partially reverse the price hike.

But the rebels have demanded posts in key state institutions as part of a push for greater political clout.

The fighting in the north of the capital has raged continuously since Thursday when nearly 40 people were killed in a single day.

Two prominent opponents of the rebels — Islamist cleric Abdel Majid Al Zindani and General Ali Mohsen Al Ahmar, an army commander whose troops played a prominent role in a 2011 uprising that forced veteran strongman Ali Abdullah Saleh from power — are both inside the Al Iman University campus, multiple sources said.

Residents of northern districts have begun to flee their homes, an AFP correspondent reported. The streets of the capital were largely deserted as shops remained closed and the education ministry ordered schools to suspend lessons indefinitely.

Sanaa University told students to stay on holiday until mid-October after its campus was hit by shelling.

One of the capital’s main markets, the Ali Mohsen Souk, has been closed for three days, which residents said had started to cause problems in obtaining fruit and vegetables.

#1  Note the presence of Shiekh Abd al-Majid al-Zindani. Zindani is a Muslim Brother and noted Islamist thinker. who was responsible for the creation of the Yemeni Congregation for Reform (Islah) in 1990. Since then the Islah took control of Yemen's minuscule education establishment and staffed it with Muslim Brothers. In later yearss the Brotherhood and Islah followers entered government, established charities, and even a university. They made alliances with Sunni tribal leaders. Today the Sunni tribes can be considered the military wing of the Ikhwan, and it is they who are now doing battle with the Shiite Houthis of northern Yemen, a tribal element supported by Iran.

#2  Interesting, Beldar Sloque3832. I hadn't realized the muslim Brotherhood had moved into Yemen. Frankly, it never occurred to me that the Yemenis were interested in that level of modernity, which is no doubt my prejudice speaking.

China-Japan-Koreas
Explosions in Xinjiang kill two
Two people were killed and several more wounded in at least three explosions in China's western province of Xinjiang on Sunday, state media reported, but gave few details.

The blasts came as China punished 17 regional officials and police "for being accountable" for a July 28 attack by masked militants that led to almost 100 deaths of police, officials and civilians, and for the subsequent killing of a pro-Beijing imam.

A blast in Luntai county, on the northern edge of the Taklamakan desert in central Xinjiang, hit a shop in the county seat, while with two more explosions occurred in nearby townships on Sunday, a Communist Party news website said.

The wording of the report suggested there were other explosions but it gave no details. It said, "At present, all the injured have been sent to hospital for full treatment, local social order is normal, and the cases are being investigated."

Turkish Security Forces Clash With Kurds
[Ynet] Turkish security forces on Sunday fired tear gas and water on dozens of Kurds in a village on the border with Syria where tens of thousands of Syrian Kurdish refugees have streamed into Turkey to escape the fighting with Death Eaters of the Islamic State group.

Authorities temporarily closed the border and refugees were piling on the Syrian side of the frontier.

There were conflicting reports as to what caused the festivities. The state-run Anadolu Agency said Kurdish protesters threw stones at the security forces who prevented dozens of Kurdish onlookers from approaching the border. Private NTV television said the security forces preventing a group of Kurds who claimed they wanted to take aid to beleaguered Kurds in Syria.

[DAWN] SWABI/KOHAT: Unidentified assailants lobbed a hand grenade on the hujra of a local leader of Pakistain People's Party in Maneri Payan area here on the night between Friday and Saturday, but nobody was hurt in the incident.

Iraq
Iraqi Forces Launch Operation against Militants near Fallujah
[ABNA.IR] Iraqi government forces launched an operation Sunday to rescue an army battalion which has come under repeated attack by ISIL faceless myrmidons near the western city of Fallujah,
... the City of Mosques, which might have somthing to do with why it's not called Center of Prosperity or a really nice place to raise your kids...
military sources said.

The assault involving army, police, counter-terrorism units and volunteers is aimed at pushing back ISIL gunnies who have been besieging an army base for more than a week.

"Forces from the interior and defense ministries, counter-terrorism forces and volunteers are advancing to clear the Al-Sijr area," Iraqi military front man Qassem Atta told AFP. The operation is backed by US air support, he said, without elaborating.

There was no immediate confirmation from the Pentagon of any US air strikes in the area, which is barely 50 kilometers (30 miles) west of the capital Baghdad.

Atta said the base was located north of Fallujah between the krazed killer-held villages of Saqlawiyah and Al-Sijr. "This operation is aimed at thwarting attempts by the jihadists to seize the battalion headquarters," an army officer involved in the operation told AFP. "They have been trying for 10 days," he said.

Kurds Issue Dramatic Call to Arms as Fresh ISIS Massacre Looms
[ISRAELNATIONALNEWS] Kurdish fighters have issued an urgent call to arms amid warnings of an impending massacre by the Islamic State terrorist group in northern Syria.

The Kurdish People's Protection Unit (YPG) has been locked in a fierce battle with IS and other Islamist groups almost since the start of Syria's civil war. Despite being relatively isolated and receiving no foreign aid from any states the YPG has proven perhaps the most effective force in pushing back against IS.

But as the jihadis' focus shifts to consolidating power in northern Syria the Kurds have found themselves under fiercer attack than ever.

Bombings, Mortar Fire Kill 13 People In Iraq
[Ynet] Bombs and mortar fire killed 13 people in Shiite areas in and around Baghdad on Sunday, as Iraqi security forces said they succeeded in breaking a siege on soldiers who had been surrounded by Islamic State Lions of Islam west of Baghdad.

Police officials said three mortar shells landed on a residential area in Sabaa al-Bour, a town just north of Baghdad, killing six, including a 12-year old-boy. Several cars were damaged in the attack, which maimed 17. Later, a kaboom in a commercial street killed four people and maimed 11 in the capital's northeastern district of Shaab.

At night, a bomb kaboom at a commercial street in the Shiite part of Baghdad's district of Bayaa killed three people and maimed seven others, said police.

Iraq Said To Foil Islamic State Chemical Attack
[IsraelTimes] An Iraqi lawmaker said Saturday that his country's army had foiled a chemical attack by the Islamic State.

Soldiers dismantled seven chlorine gas-tipped rockets in the Diyala province, Foral al-Tamimi was quoted as saying in a report by the semi-official Iranian news site Press TV.

The rockets were to be fired at civilians in the predominantly Shiite city of Muqdadiyah, northwest of Baghdad, the report said.

In June, the Islamic State took control of a former chemical weapons facility in the area, where remnants of lethal chemical agents including sarin gas were kept.

Surveillance footage showed that some of the equipment had been looted, the Iranian report said.

At the time, the US expressed concern but also doubt as to whether IS had the capacity to weaponize the old chemical agents.

"We remain concerned about the seizure of any military site by the ISIL," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki was quoted by the Wall Street Journal as saying.

"We do not believe that the complex contains CW materials of military value and it would be very difficult, if not impossible, to safely move the materials," she added.

Shiite Iran, which has been warily watching the lightning gains made by the Sunni Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, is a staunch ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad, whose forces have carried out multiple chemical attacks against military and civilian targets.

Turkish hostages released after negotiations, says Erdogan
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday dozens of Turkish hostages held by ISIS militants in Iraq had been freed as a result of negotiations and no ransom had been paid for their release.
"We're feeding youse guys. Why are you biting our hands?"
“A bargain for money is totally out of the question. There were only diplomatic and political negotiations. And this is a diplomatic victory,” Erdogan told reporters at Ankara's Esenboga Airport before departing for New York for a UN General Assembly meeting.

Forty-six Turks abducted by ISIS militants in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul were freed and returned to Turkey on Saturday after more than three months in captivity, in what Erdogan described as a “secret rescue operation” by Turkey's spy agency.

Asked whether hostages had been released in exchange for ISIS militants, Erdogan said: “It doesn't matter whether there was a swap or not. The most important thing is they (the hostages) are back and reunited with their families.”

Turkish diplomats and their children were seized along with special forces officers in their country's consulate on June 11 as ISIS militants overran Mosul and whole swathes of northern Iraq.

Turkey, a Nato member and Washington's key ally in the region, has been reluctant to take part in combat operations against ISIS militants, or allow a US-led coalition to use its airbases for strikes against the militants, citing concern over for the safety of its hostages.

Erdogan signalled Turkey may reconsider its position now that the hostages have been released.

“We could have said yes when they asked us to join the coalition, but we couldn't do it at that time. We told them that we cannot take any steps until the hostage issue has been resolved,” he said.

“We said we cannot play a role in the coalition, but we will map out a roadmap after intensive negotiations with coalition members,” he said.

IS jihadists have seized swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria, both of which border Jordan, declaring a "caliphate" and imposing a brutal interpretation of Islamic law.

The 11 alleged IS members "admitted their links to the leadership of the Daesh organization in Syria and that they were charged with carrying out terrorist operations in Jordan targeting a number of vital interests", the official said, using the IS group's Arabic acronym.

Southeast Asia
More Filipinos pledge allegiance to ISIS
Some 100 local Muslims have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) caliphate on Friday. Those who pledged their allegiance took their mass oath-taking in a surprise announcement inside the Masjid Islamic Center, according to an insider.

An elderly Muslim cleric Jamil "Motawwa" Yahya, a former senior member of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and colleague of MILF leader Salamat Hashim, allegedly organized the mass oath-taking. Yahya is reportedly affiliated with the Bangsamoro Labor Organization which is active in the United Arab Emirates and the Middle East region. Other sources said members of the Khilafah Islamiyah Mindanao-Black Flag Movement was reportedly behind the convergence.

An Afghan cleric Humam Abdul Najid, who has ties with Southeast Asian terror organization Jemaah Islamiyah, is also being linked to the secret mass oath-taking, but these allegations could not be immediately confirmed.

#1  The Philippines are about 90% Christian (mostly Catholic) and 5.6% Islamics. Actually, that is fairly high compared to the U.S. ~ 1.0. It's amazing that such a small percentage can be such a pain in the arse.

#3  Both the ISIS + Chinese PLA are getting closer to Guam-WESTPAC via the PHIL, which is why I'm SSSSHHHHH ... CCCCC glad to see the Russians flying around in their heavy bombers.

Wid anti-US, US Globalist Obama in the WH, Guam-WESTPAC needs all the deterrence they can get, even iff it means from the Russians.

But you didn't hear it from me.

Indonesia Names Four Foreigners as Terror Suspects
[AnNahar] Four foreign men detained in Indonesia for allegedly planning to take part in holy warrior training were officially named suspects for breaking counter-terrorism and immigration laws, police said Saturday.

The men, who police believe to be ethnic Uighur from China, are suspected of arranging to meet the country's most wanted holy warrior, Santoso, for training. They were formally jugged
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
on Friday night after a week in jug.

Police are also investigating whether the men have links to the Islamic State group that has seized control over parts of Syria and Iraq, but say their motives for seeking training are so far unknown.

Santoso's Eastern Indonesia Mujahidin (MIT) network hides out in the central mountains of Sulawesi island, a known hotbed for militancy, and is blamed for a spate of police killings in the area.

This is the first known case in recent years of foreigners coming to Indonesia for training.

Authorities have been more concerned with the dozens of Indonesians joining jihadist groups in Syria and Iraq, fearing they may return with networks and skills to carry our deadly attacks in the country.

Police initially thought the men were Turkish nationals but later said their Turkish passports were discovered to be fakes and had been obtained for around $1,000 from a broker in Bangkok.

They now believe the men are from China's Xinjiang province and are Uighur, a mostly Moslem ethnic minority, but have not officially confirmed their identities.

"Today we have been working with officials at the Turkish embassy to investigate their background," national police front man Ronny Sompie told AFP.

"On Sunday, officials from the Chinese embassy will coordinate with counter-terrorism police to help determine their identities and nationalities," he said.

Three Indonesians were also formally arrested and named suspects for aiding the foreign men. Under Indonesia's legal system, suspects are only formally charged once they face court.

Indonesia has in the past struggled to quell Islamist holy warrior groups, which carried out a string of deadly attacks last decade, including the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people, mostly foreigners.

A successful clampdown in recent years has seen the end of major lethal attacks, but has given rise to smaller splinter groups.

Indonesia is home to the world's biggest Moslem population. It is also the world's third-biggest democracy, where the vast majority practice a moderate form of Islam.

Deadly blast hits Hezbollah checkpoint in east of Lebanon, 3 killed
[ABNA.IR] A SUICIDE blast has targeted a checkpoint manned by the Shia Hezbollah group in eastern Leb, killing three people, state media says.

The attacker detonated explosives in his vehicle just outside the village of Khraibeh, in the Bekaa Valley.

It is not clear whether the fatalities were Hezbollah fighters or civilians.

It comes amid heightened sectarian tensions in Leb as a result of the spill over from the three-year conflict in neighbouring Syria.

It is not yet clear who was behind Saturday's attack, which took place some three miles away from the Syrian border.

Extremist Sunni holy warriors have targeted Hezbollah strongholds in Leb in the past over the group's support for Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Lord of the Baath...
in his battle against Saudi, US backed-rebels.

A security official quoted by Rooters said "the Hezbollah fighters at the checkpoint were all killed," with several others who were nearby maimed.

But Hezbollah-run Al-Manar TV has denied that any of its fighters were killed in the blast.

Earlier on Saturday, the government said that a Lebanese soldier had been "executed" by Nusra Front - an al-Qaeda-linked force fighting Mr Assad's government.

The soldier was one of a number of soldiers and coppers captured by Islamist holy warriors from Syria who were fighting Lebanese government forces in the town of Arsal, near the Syrian border, in August.

The group had been demanding the withdrawal of Hezbollah fighters from Syria, as well as the release of Islamist holy warriors from Lebanese prisons.

Some of the hostages are reportedly being held by Nusra Front and others by Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. ....
(IS) Death Eaters.

IS has already beheaded two other Lebanese soldiers in recent weeks after their demands were not met.

On Saturday, the Lebanese army stepped up its military offensive against Islamists active in Arsal, which is also home to thousands of Syrian refugees.

It followed the killing of two Lebanese soldiers in the town when their vehicle was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade on Friday.

Hezbollah Drones Wreak Havoc On Syrian Rebel Bases
[IsraelTimes] For the first time in its history, Shiite terror group Hezbollah carried out a successful unmanned aircraft strike, targeting al-Qaeda-linked Syrian rebel bases near the northeastern Lebanese town of Arsal early Sunday, according to the Iranian Fars News Agency.

Until Sunday's battle with the Syrian rebels, Hezbollah had used unmanned aircraft primarily for reconnaissance missions, including an alleged operation across the Israeli border in April 2013, during which the Israel Defense Forces managed to down a suspected Hezbollah drone only 10 kilometers west of Haifa. At the time, the Shiite group's leader, Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah, denied that the drone belonged to the organization.

The group's unprecedented drone attack was reported to have killed at least 23 fighters from the extremist al-Nusra Front.

Hezbollah ground troops continued the offensive on the rebel bases, and several al-Nusra operatives were held captive by the Lebanese militia, the semi-official Iranian news agency reported. Abu Leith al-Shami, a Lebanese national, and a high ranking al-Nusra official, was also said to have been killed in battle with Hezbollah.

Hezbollah's push-back against the al-Nusra Front comes a day after a suicide bomber killed a number of people at a checkpoint near Lebanon's border with Syria, only hours after the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda had reportedly executed a Lebanese soldier.

The drone strikes by Hezbollah highlight the group's advanced military capabilities and signify a worrying development for Israel, which has been closely monitoring hostilities across the border.

Earlier Sunday, a Hezbollah official asserted that it could capture a chunk of the Galilee, including some border communities, in a future conflict with Israel, the Walla news site reported. A senior Israeli army official made a similar assessment last week.

The senior IDF official warned that while Hezbollah has no immediate plan to attack Israel, a minor security incident could erupt into a full-fledged war on Israel's northern front.

In the event of a confrontation with Hezbollah, the fighting would likely last some four months, would have the IDF face some 30,000 troops, would incur extensive civilian casualties on the Lebanese side, and may see infiltration into northern Israeli towns to carry out attacks, the official predicted.

Gives notice of Hezbollah droning,
But they strike sure and swift
Once they manage to lift
Enough rocks to permit a good stoning.
