Fighting intensifies in Sabratha
Tunis, 21 September 2017:

Fighting in Sabratha between the 48th Brigade along with its allies and the rival Anti-ISIS Operations Room (AIOR) intensified today after efforts yesterday by elders from Zawia and Zintan to broker a ceasefire collapsed. Both sides have blamed the other for the failure of the ceasefire, with each demanding that the other withdraw.

According to the Sabratha media centre, AIOR demanded that the 48th brigade withdraw to its headquarters and allow the national security directorate to take over the town centre. AIOR, however, is reported to have adamantly refused the same withdrawal request from the mediators. Instead it has accused the brigade of being allied to militants and being involved in people smuggling.

Its latest statement was that it would secure the town itself.

During in the day there were fresh attempts to mediate a new truce but this came against the background of bitter clashes in the centre of the town, included random rocket fire. According to Sabratha hospital, which says it is operating as best it can in the situation, it has received seven dead and 25 wounded since the clashes started five days ago.

In response to the situation, UNSMIL has called for an immediate end to hostilities and for the protection of civilians in accordance with international humanitarian law. The head of Sabratha military council, however, has called on UNSMIL and other international organisations to step in and help move illegal immigrants from local detention centres.

For its part, the Red Crescent, which has evacuated a number of families from the town centre, has called for a safe corridor to be set up to allow others to leave.

The Libyan National Army’s western operations room has meanwhile come out in support of AIOR claiming that it is a unit of the LNA and that it is fighting the Muslim Brotherhood.

There are reports today that the LNA is mobilising forces in the area ahead of possible action in Sabratha.

One injured in gun battle at Istanbul courthouse, police detain 20
[Hurriyet Daily News] At least one person was injured on Sept. 21 when a shootout broke out between rival gangs at Istanbul’s Caglayan courthouse.

The shootout broke out between the opposite sides of a murder trial, which was ongoing at the 10th High Criminal Court at the complex.

An injured person, only identified with the initials K.G., was taken to the hospital by medical teams. A child was also taken to the hospital, but it was unclear if it was a case of shock or physical injury.

Some 20 people in connection to the armed clash were detained while a brawl also erupted during the police intervention. Reinforcements and a police helicopter were also deployed to the scene.

Those detained were reportedly members of two rival gangs that have also had festivities in the past.

Police are searching for anyone else involved in the fracas.

K.G. was reportedly being tried without arrest in the case of a murder committed eight months ago in the Gaziosmanpasa district.

Caglayan courthouse, one of the largest in the country, was at the center of a major incident in March 2015 when members of the outlawed Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party/Front (DHKP/C) seized and killed a prosecutor, Mehmet Selim Kiraz.

Iraq
Abadi: Operation launched to retake Hawija from ISIL
[Al Jazeera] Iraq's prime minister says government forces have begun the operation to retake the town of Hawija from the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS, also known as ISIS) group.

In a statement released by his office, Haider al-Abadi said the operation began at dawn on Thursday, just two days after Iraqi forces began an offensive against ISIS holdouts in the western Anbar province.

"We announce the launch of the first phase of the liberation of Hawija, in fulfilment of our pledge to our people to liberate all Iraqi territory and to cleanse it from the terrorist ISIS gangs," Abadi said, using the Arabic acronym for ISIS.

Abadi praised his forces, who were "fighting more than one liberation battle at the same time and winning victory after victory", adding that "a new victory" was looming.

Al Jazeera's Hoda Abdel-Hamid, speaking from Sulaimaniyah city in Iraq's Kurdish region, said that up to 2,000 ISIS fighters were estimated to be in Hawija.

"Some have argued that Hawija should have been dealt with before the djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
offensive as there's a sizeable number of ISIS fighters - estimated between a 1,500 to 2,000. And that the Hawija district has actually acted as a rear base for the ISIS fighters, somewhere where they could have retreated safely," she said.

The offensive started from the northwest and the southwest of Hawija district, she said.

"It is going to take a while because the area is full of small villages and it's quite vast and porous. So they will have to try to encircle Hawija town before they are able to get into it."

Salahuddin Kombat Kronicle
Iraqi forces begin operations in Salahuddin

Shirqat (IraqiNews.com) ISIS News Today: Iraqi government and paramilitary forces recaptured several villages on Thursday as the government launched a wide-scale, final operation to retake all of Islamic State’s remaining havens.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and the Joint Operations Command said Thursday and late Wednesday that major offensives were launching to retake Islamic State last bastions in Salahuddin’s Shirqat and Kirkuk’s Hawija. Other offensives had launched earlier this week at the group’s holdouts in western Anbar’s borders with Syria.

Iraqi air forces hit ISIS convoy near Hawija

Salahuddin (IraqiNews.com) An Islamic State convoy escaping southwestern Kirkuk toward east of Salahuddin province has been targeted in aerial shelling, a local source was quoted saying.

Speaking to AlSumaria News, the source said, “heavy shelling targeted on Thursday an IS convoy composed of several vehicles escaping Hawija, Kirkuk, toward Mutaibija in Salahuddin.”

The source, who asked to be anonymous, expected losses inflicted on the enemy.

Occasional attacks have been witnessed in Mutaibija by IS against government and paramilitary troops deployments since Iraqi forces, backed by a U.S.-led coalition and PMUs, launched a major offensive to retake IS-held areas.

The Iraqi army said in September its forces recaptured the western coast of Shirqat, located south of Mosul, on the west bank of the Tigris river, after being surrounded for months by Iraqi troops and the pro-government Shi’ite militias. The eastern coast of Shirqat, is still under the IS control.

ISIS troops quit the war in Salahuddin
It's all fun and games until the airstrikes begin
Salahuddin (IraqiNews.com) Islamic State militants have turned in themselves to security troops, north of Salahuddin, while others set headquarters on fire before escaping to Kirkuk.

“Seven IS militants extradited themselves to security troops in eastern Shirqat. Among the militants was Mendil Thanon, from western Shirqat,” the source told Baghdad Today on Thursday.

In related news, intelligence of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) said IS militants set their headquarters in western Shirqat on fire before escaping toward Hawija in south west of Kirkuk.

A statement by the PMF’s media service said, “the militants burnt their headquarters located near al-Zab river before withdrawal from western Shirqat toward Hawija as Iraqi troops advance.”

PMF announced earlier liberating five villages in northeast of Shirqat and killing several militants hiding at houses there.

Soddy ISIS emir dies in al-Siniyah region

Salahuddin (IraqiNews.com) The pro-government paramilitary troops have killed a Saudi-national Islamic State leader in Salahuddin province.

A statement by al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) said on Thursday, “troops of the sixth brigade managed to kill abu Abdul Rahman, an IS Saudi Emir, during attempt to infiltrate toward military units in al-Siniyah region.”

Earlier on the day, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, deputy PMFs commander, said, “military operations carried out by the troops in cooperation with security services will take place through two stages; first one at western Shirqat, north of Tikrit, while the second at Hawija, southwest of Kirkuk.

Iraqi forces drive back ISIS attack

Salahuddin (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi army forces on Thursday repelled an attempt by Islamic State members to take over the road between Baghdad and Mosul.

A security source told Alghad Press that the army’s Counter-Terrorism Service forces countered sneaking IS members at al-Zawia crossroad. The source said the militants were attempting to take over the area to cut the Baghdad-Mosul road.

“CTS forces have managed to exterminate the sneaking group completely, and destroyed three vehicles,” said the source.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and the Joint Operations Command said Thursday that major offensives were launching to retake Islamic State last bastions in Salahuddin’s Shirqat and Kirkuk’s Hawija. Other offensives had launched earlier this week at the group’s holdouts in western Anbar’s borders with Syria.

Federal Police, Rapid Response and the pro-government Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) are carrying out the attack, according to the command.

PMF media said its troops managed to take over four villages in the IS-held eastern side of Salahuddin’s Shirqat town, while Federal Police chief, Shaker Jawdat, said his troops recaptured three other villages after invading the town with tens of combat vehicles and troops.

Iraq hopes to eliminate Islamic State fighters who emerged in 2014 to proclaim a self-styled “Islamic Caliphate”. So far, operations since October 2016 have managed to recapture Mosul, the group’s former capital, and the town of Tal Afar, west of Mosul.

Anbar’s western towns of Annah, Qaim and Rawa have been held by the extremist group since 2014, when it occupied one third of Iraq to proclaim a self-styled Islamic “Caliphate”. Iraqi troops were able to return life back to normal in the biggest cities of Anbar including Fallujah, Ramadi and others after recapturing them in 2015 and 2016.

The activists informed that the Islamic State militants captured the villages of Mas’ud and Rasm al-Awabed, east of Hama, after battles and clashes with Syrian regime forces in the vicinity of Uqayribat town.

It is noteworthy that the Syrian army forces recaptured the city of Uqayribat and the villages of Abu Hanaya and Selba, earlier this week, while tightened their grip on Selba’s oil station.

4 Kidz die in mine attack near Hasakah

Hasakah (Syria News) A landmine explosion killed, on Wednesday, four children, in the countryside of Hasaka, local sources told Qasioun News.

The sources informed that four children were killed in the explosion of a land mine in Tal Hamis City in the countryside of Hasaka.

The government of Hasakah explained that a landmine, from the remains of the Islamic State, exploded while a number of children were playing in Tal Hamis area, northeast of Hasaka, killing four children.

Early this week, a child was killed and seven people were injured in a booby-trapped motorcycle explosion in al-Seyahi District, in the city of Qamishli, north of Hasakah.

30 families rescued in Salahuddin

Shirqat (IraqiNews.com) Paramilitary troops fighting Islamic State militants said Thursday they had rescued dozens of families in Salahuddin province as operations continue to militants’ havens.

Jabbar al-Maamouri, a senior leader at the Popular Mobilization Forces, told Alsumaria News that the troops managed to set free 30 families which the militants had tried to use as human shields as a military campaign seeks to retake the eastern side of the Islamic State-held town of Shirqat.

Maamouri said four defense lines set by IS had collapsed without resistance, while several villages were recaptured. He added that ten militants turned themselves in with security forces.

Iraqi government and paramilitary forces recaptured several villages on Thursday as the government launched a wide-scale, final operation to retake all of Islamic State’s remaining havens in Kirkuk and Salahuddin.
