Ghani Speaks Out Against Proxy Warfare at South Asia Summit
[Tolo News] At a gathering of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) on Wednesday, Afghanistan's Caped President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
assured officials from Afghanistan's neighboring countries that he would not allow Afghan territory to be used as a springboard for attacks on other countries nor a battleground for proxy war.

"We will not allow our territory to be used against any of our neighbors, but we will also not permit anybody to conduct proxy wars on our soil either," Ghani said. President Ghani reminded participants of the summit that while he spoke, insurgency wages on in Afghanistan. He pointed to the recent attack in Paktika
...which coincidentally borders South Wazoo...
province as evidence of the dire state of security in the country.

Indian's Prime Minister Narendra Modi echoed Ghani's comments with calls for cooperation to combat terrorism in the region. "We feel the endless pain of loss of lives, let's work together to fulfill the pledges we have taken to combat terrorism," he said. "For India, our vision for the region rests on five pillars: trade, investment, assistance and cooperation..."

Meanwhile,
...back at the the conspirators' cleverly concealed hideout the long-awaited message arrived. They quickly got to work with their decoder rings...
the Pak delegation made familiar promises to work honestly and cooperatively to bring peace to the region. "My vision for our region is a dispute free South Asia, where instead of fighting each other we jointly fight poverty, illiteracy, disease, malnutrition and unemployment; we invest in your youth to unleash their creativity, talent and enterprise, we need a bone of trust so that we can solve our problems," Pakistain's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
said.

The SAARC summit was hosted in Nepal, the third time the small mountainous country has organized the event. Eight countries participated.

Afghan Senate Approves Foreign Troops Staying On
[AnNahar] Afghanistan's upper house of parliament on Thursday approved two agreements with the U.S. and NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A collection of multinational and multilingual and multicultural armed forces, all of differing capabilities, working toward a common goal by pulling in different directions...
allowing about 12,500 troops to remain in the country next year as concerns grow over the worsening insurgency.

The Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA) with the United States, and a similar pact with NATO, were approved by the lower house of parliament on Sunday before being sent to the senate.

Both documents were the source of huge friction between the Afghan government and its allies under previous president Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai
... A former Baltimore restaurateur, now 12th and current President of Afghanistan, displacing the legitimate president Rabbani in December 2004. He was installed as the dominant political figure after the removal of the Taliban regime in late 2001 in a vain attempt to put a Pashtun face on the successor state to the Taliban. After the 2004 presidential election, he was declared president regardless of what the actual vote count was. He won a second, even more dubious, five-year-term after the 2009 presidential election. His grip on reality has been slipping steadily since around 2007, probably from heavy drug use...
But President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
, who came to power in September, reset ties by signing the long-awaited deals on his first day in power.

"We approved both documents today," Belgis Roshan, a senator, told AFP.

Qadamuddin Nekpa, a parliamentary media officer, said only seven MPs voted against the deals.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed the ratification, saying it meant the alliance "now has the legal basis needed to move forward with our non-combat mission to train, advise and assist the Afghan National Security Forces from 1 January".

U.S.-led NATO combat operations will finish at the end of this year, but the Taliban have launched a series of recent offensives and suicide kabooms that have severely tested Afghan soldiers and police.

Kenya Police Allow Mosques to Reopen in Port City
[AnNahar] Authorities in Kenya's troubled port city of Mombasa said Thursday they were allowing four mosques to reopen following a string of raids to hunt for weapons and supporters of Somalia's Shabaab bad boys.

Last week police said they found grenades, ammunition and petrol bombs and detained scores of people in swoops on the Masjid Musa, Sakina, Swafaa and Minaa mosques. One person was also rubbed out as they tried to throw a grenade at police.

"Our intention is not to take over mosques, we are here to help you and your safety," said Mombasa County Commissioner Nelson Marwa, announcing that the mosques could reopen in time for Friday prayers.

"I want to tell you now that the mosques are now open and you are all welcome to go to the mosques," he said.

The raids prompted fresh unrest in Mombasa, an important tourist center key port city and gateway for trade with east Africa, with four people stabbed to death in apparent Dire Revenge attacks.

Somalia's al-Qaeda-affiliated Shabaab Islamists on Saturday also ambushed a bus in northern Kenya and executed 28 non-Moslem passengers in what they said was Dire Revenge for the raids.

Moslem civil society groups have accused police of worsening what they describe as an already volatile situation.

Several Islamic preachers have been rubbed out in Mombasa in recent years in alleged extra-judicial killings by security forces and power struggles between moderate and radical Moslem factions. Churches have also been attacked.

U.S. issues travel warning for Djibouti
The United States has issued a warning to travelers citing "specific threats from terrorism" aimed at Western and local interests in the east African nation of Djibouti.
There goes the holiday travel plans...
Somali al Qaeda-linked militants have previously attacked Djibouti, saying it was to punish the east African state for contributing to an African Union force in Somalia.

"Attacks may target official government facilities, including embassies and military installations, as well as soft targets such asrestaurants, clubs, hotels and other commercial entities," the U.S. advisory said.

"While Djiboutian officials continue the pursuit of those responsible for previous terrorist attacks, many of those involved remain at large and still operate in the region," said the advisory, released on Tuesday.

In May, two people were killed in grenade blasts in Djibouti city at a busy restaurant popular with Westerners. Somalia's al Shabaab Islamist rebel group claimed responsibility.

Egypt Braces For Major Islamist Protest Friday
Interesting times, most certainly.
[IsraelTimes] Egyptians are bracing for potential violence ahead of a planned major protest Friday by Islamists calling for the toppling of the government and the defense of their religion, with security forces vowing to confront any unrest with "lethal force."

The Islamists' call for nationwide rallies Friday is the first attempt in months to hold large protests in the face of an overwhelming crackdown since the military's ouster last year of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.

The call also takes a starkly different tone. While past demonstrations by Morsi supporters have played down their Islamist nature, trying to rally broader support, the ultraconservative Salafis organizing Friday's rallies have cast them in stark religious terms. They warn of a war against Islam and have urged protesters to raise Korans in the air.

While many believe the protests won't succeed in gathering large numbers, security officials have voiced concerns over possible attacks, especially after Egypt's main Death Eater organization recently pledged allegiance to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group.

Security forces deployed in Cairo's central Tahrir Square and in other key spots around the country Thursday evening. Many Egyptians say they are canceling social gatherings, avoiding public transportation and remaining home Friday.

Churches in southern provinces, where both Christians and hard-line Islamists have large concentrations, canceled Friday services and Sunday religious classes.

The fears have been further stoked by a campaign on pro-government media, playing patriotic songs and showing army special forces deploying. One TV presenter, Ahmed Mousa, urged the government to crush any sign of unrest.

"If it is a million armed persons, kill them all," he said. "I don't want you to arrest ... just kill the armed people."

Since Morsi's ouster, the crackdown has killed hundreds and put more than 20,000 in prison. A new law effectively banning protests has also silenced non-Islamist critics. In the media, Islamists are depicted as fomenters of violence or linked to a Death Eater insurgency.

With anti-Islamist feeling high, some Cairo residents vowed to help police against protesters, raising the potential for further violence.

"People will eat them up. We are all opening our shops and coming. I have a gun and I will bring it with me," said Eid Said, a shopowner in the capital's middle-class Dokki district.

Nearby, Maher al-Halawani, who runs an electronics shop, said he is keeping his family at home not out of fear but "to leave the streets empty" so police can easily put down Islamists.

The protest call comes from the Salafi Front, a faction in the Salafi movement concentrated in parts of the Nile Delta. Morsi's Moslem BrĂĽderbund supported the demonstrations. On its Facebook page, the Salafi Front calls for a "Moslem Youth Uprising" to "topple military rule in Egypt," urging followers to "protect your Koran."

"There is a war on my religion and my Islam," says one young man in a video on the group's page, wearing a black shirt reading, "The Battle for Identity."

Egypt jails 78 boys for pro-Mursi protests
More details on a story posted yesterday.
An Egyptian court sentenced 78 teenage boys to between two and five years in prison on Wednesday for joining protests demanding the return of the ousted president, judicial sources said.
Never too young to be jugged in Egypt...
A court in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria sentenced 78 boys who are under 18 for joining the blacklisted Muslim Brotherhood's rallies in the past three months, a judicial official said. While the judicial sources said the boys were aged between 13 and 17, their defence lawyer said the youngest was 15.

"The 78 minors, members of the Muslim Brotherhood, were arrested for participating in protests organised by the group calling for the downfall of the regime in which they blocked roads and transportation, and terrified citizens," state agency Mena reported.

They will be held in juvenile detention until they turn 18, when they will be transferred to adult prison.

"The number of children jailed since Mursi's ouster is unprecedented," said Ahmed Messilhy, head of a committee to defend children at Egypt's lawyers syndicate.

Defence lawyer Ayman El Dabi said he planned to appeal the ruling within the next few weeks. The defendants, he said, were arrested at several protests over the past year and had been in detention since. Some were not even protesting and "were in the wrong place," he added.
They sure were. Why weren't they at school or at swim practice down at the Y?

Arabia
12% of rehab terrorists relapse
[ARABNEWS] Twelve percent of those who had participated in government-run rehabilitation programs for terrorism have relapsed and returned to terror-related activities, a Ministry of Interior official has revealed.

Maj. Gen. Mansour Al-Turki, front man for the Interior Ministry, said officials at the Prince Muhammad bin Naif Center for Counseling and Care are now trying to determine the causes for these failures.

However,
it was a brave man who first ate an oyster...
he said the program has been largely successful. Over the past two years more than 2,500 people had participated in the programs, with 80 percent not returning to terrorist activities, he said.

Al-Turki rejected the notion that the program itself caused some to relapse and take part in terror-related activities in the Kingdom. "Without the program, thousands of those who were released would have been exploited by terrorist organizations," he said.

He said the task of staff at the center is to determine why the 12 percent relapsed. "We will use the findings to reduce relapses." No rehabilitation program could be 100 percent successful, he said.

Al-Turki said the center recently launched online counseling programs for citizens and residents. Those using the site must abide by the ministry's rules to debate in a polite manner and respect the views and feelings of others. No one is allowed to ridicule or insult anyone, he said. The website does not allow links to other sites or services.

The ministry announced earlier that 90 people graduated from rehabilitation programs in Riyadh and Jeddah this year. All graduates would undergo follow-up programs to ensure they integrate properly into society.

'Gulf Interpol' to crush terror, crime
[ARABNEWS] The GCC plans to set up a joint police force to tackle organized crime syndicates, terrorist groups, drug smugglers and human traffickers.

The force, dubbed the Gulf Interpol, would have its headquarters in Abu Dhabi with Emirati Lt. Col Mubarak Al-Khayli as its chief, said a GCC statement released on Thursday. The GCC body would be similar to Europol, the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
's law enforcement agency that handles criminal intelligence and deals with organized crime.

"The GCC interior ministers have given the green light to the plan to set up the police force because large-scale criminal and terrorist networks pose a significant threat to the internal security of the GCC and the safety and livelihood of its people," said the statement.

The GCC statement said the force would help counter cross-border criminal activity in the region. "There is a need to lay down a clear-cut strategy to combat all crimes, particularly drug trafficking and money laundering," said Kuwaiti Interior Minister Sheikh Mohammad Al-Khalid Al-Sabah, who chaired the ministers' meeting in Kuwait City.

"All GCC member states will subscribe to a joint criminal database, with each appointing a representative to act as a point of contact with the GCC police force," said Abdullatif Al-Zayani, speaking after the meeting.

He said the presidency of the body would rotate among the six member states every three years.

The GCC police force would operate under the security department of the GCC general-secretariat, which acts as a central database and information exchange unit, he said. The GCC ministerial council is set to ratify the plan before presenting it to the 35th GCC summit scheduled to take place in Doha on Dec. 19.

Report: Qaida Moved U.S. Hostage ahead of Yemen Raid
Mahmoud the Weasel has friends on both sides, donchaknow...
[AnNahar] Al-Qaeda bully boyz holding an American journalist in Yemen moved him and two other foreign hostages just days before a raid to free him, a Yemeni defense ministry website said.

The journalist as well as a Brit and a South African are among several hostages held by al-Qaeda in the violence-wracked country, according to the ministry's 26Sep.net news website.

On Tuesday, Yemeni special forces, said to have been backed by U.S. commandos, raided an al-Qaeda hideout in Hajr As-Saghir, in the southeastern province of Hadramawt, to free the captives.

Eight hostages -- six Yemenis, a Saudi and an Æthiopian -- were freed in the operation, in which seven gunnies were killed, Yemeni security officials said at the time.

The ministry website reported late Wednesday that hours before the raid the bully boyz moved the American journalist, the Briton and the South African.

A Yemeni hostage and a fifth person believed to be Turkish were also moved, said the report, quoting a member of the Yemeni special forces who had spoken to one of the freed hostages.

The special forces member was identified as Abu Maruf, but the website provided no further details or official confirmation.

The New York Times
...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...
, quoting American and Yemeni officials, said on Wednesday that U.S. Special Operations commandos carried out a raid with Yemeni troops to try to free the American captive.

"But when the commandos swooped in on the mountain cave where they believed the American was being held, they found eight other hostages, including six Yemenis, but not the American," it said.

The newspaper added that it had initially withheld the information "at the request of the B.O. regime," out of concern for the safety of the American hostage.

The Times said it was withholding the name of the captive journalist.

Abu Maruf told 26Sep.net that the operation followed intelligence information that al-Qaeda bully boyz were holding hostages, "including a number of foreigners."

Al-Qaeda is active in southern and eastern Yemen, especially in Hadramawt, where the authority of the central government is weak.

A South African teacher, Pierre Korkie, was kidnapped by al-Qaeda bully boyz in May last year along with his wife Yolande, who was released in January.

Ukip Peer Reported to Lords Speaker for Calling on Muslims to Debate Contents of Koran
[Breitbart] A UK Independence Party peer, Lord Pearson, has been reported to the Speaker of the House of Lords, Lady D’Souza, for suggesting in a debate in the House that Lee Rigby's killers had drawn inspiration for their attack from the Koran.

In the debate that followed, Pearson, who led Ukip at the last general election, told his fellow peers “My lords, are the government aware that Fusilier Rigby’s murderers quoted 22 verses of the Koran to justify their atrocity? Therefore, is the Prime Minister accurate or helpful when he describes it as a betrayal of Islam? Since the vast majority of Muslims are our peace-loving friends, should we not encourage them to address the violence in the Koran – and indeed in the life and the example of Muhammad?"

London woman charged with encouraging terrorism on Twitter
A woman has been charged with encouraging terrorism on Twitter, police have said. Alaa Abdullah Esayed, 22, of Kennington, south London, will appear before Westminster Magistrates' Court on December 10.
So her first name wasn't 'Elizabeth' or 'Anne'?
She has been charged with two offences under the Terrorism Act - encouraging terrorism, and the dissemination of terrorist publications and released on bail.

Police said one of the charges related to posts on Esayed's Twitter account, along with photographs and video links. The charge states "she intended, or was reckless as to whether, members of the public would be directly or indirectly encouraged or otherwise induced by the statement to commit, prepare or instigate acts of terrorism or convention offences".

She is also accused of providing a service that enabled others "to obtain, read, listen to or look at a terrorist publication, by providing links to speeches and other propaganda, and at the time of doing so intended an effect of her conduct to be a direct or indirect encouragement or other inducement to the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism".
What, she was part-owner of Twitter?

China-Japan-Koreas
Pudgy extols female fighter jet pilots
North Korean leader Fat Boy Kim Jong-un observed a flight drill of the country's first female pilots of pursuit planes, Pyongyang's state media reported Friday.

Kim instructed the full-scale training of those highly skilled airwomen himself, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
Because he's been so ronery...
The North's military created a female aviation unit in 1993, but it largely used outdated propeller aircraft, not advanced fighter jets.

The KCNA said the airwomen successfully conducted solo take-off and landing missions under Kim's guidance.
He's at least as good a pilot as he is a golfer...
Kim was quoted as saying he is "very satisfied and pleased to see the emergence of excellent pursuit airwomen and their brave flight" only in a few months after he gave the instruction to train them.

"The birth of the first pursuit airwomen today is an auspicious event to be celebrated by the whole country," he added, according to the KCNA.

The North's main newspaper, the Rodong Sinmun, also carried a lengthy story on Kim's field guidance and several related photos. Apparently based on an analysis of the photos, a South Korean government official said the drill took place at Sunan International Airport in Pyongyang.

It looks like the airwomen piloted MiG-15s developed in the really early Soviet era, the official said.

U.S. film on Pudgy to hit screens next month
A controversial American movie on an assassination plot targeting North Korean leader Fat Boy Kim Jong-un will hit the screens in 63 countries starting late next month, a U.S. news report said Friday.

The comedy, titled "The Interview," will be released in the U.S. and Canada on Dec. 25 before hitting the screens in European, Middle Eastern and African countries early next year, the Washington-based Voice of America (VOA) said, citing the movie's distributor Sony Pictures. South Korea was not mentioned among the 63 countries to screen the film.

The movie had originally been scheduled to be released in October, but the release date was postponed in August without explanation.

The flick tells the story of American journalists who land an interview with Kim in Pyongyang but are then recruited by the CIA to kill him.

Pyongyang's foreign ministry has bitterly denounced the film as "the most undisguised terrorism," warning "a strong and merciless countermeasure."

In August, Sony Pictures was reported to have decided to make some alterations, including removing some images of the North's leader and his late father from the movie.
Didn't fit in the lens?
Following the report of the release, the North on Friday resumed its attack on the film, warning of merciless punishment.
You can tell how intolerant a country is by how they react to disparaging comments or images about Mr. Big...
"The plot to screen the film embellished with complete distortion of reality and bizarre imagination is an act of evil provocation on our republic and an unbearable insult to our people," the North's propaganda website, Uriminzokkiri, said. "The U.S. is an evil empire that deserves divine punishment."
An odd statement from an atheist country...

Young Sister Of North Korean Leader Takes Senior Party Post
[Ynet] The younger sister of North Korean leader Kim Pudge Jong-un
...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. Pudge appears to believe in his own divinity, but has yet to produce any loaves and fishes, so his subjects remain malnourished...
has assumed a senior position in the ruling Workers' Party, state media reported on Thursday, consolidating a third generation of Kim family rule in the secretive state.

Kim Yo Jong, who is believed to be 27, had previously only been named as a party official, but was rumored to have a managerial role in her brother's government.

She was identified on Thursday as a vice director of a department within the powerful Central Committee of the ruling Workers' Party in a report carried by state news agency KCNA.

Kim Yo Jong is the only other member of the ruling Kim family known to have an official job within the North Korean government. Her brother is the third generation Kim to rule North Korea.

Danish Syria Fighters 'on Benefits while Fighting for IS'
Wouldn't want them to be a burden in their hosts...
[AnNahar] Denmark paid unemployment benefits to 28 people while they were waging war for the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) group in Syria, the Danish intelligence service was quoted as saying on Thursday.

Out of the 28 Danish people identified by the Danish Security and Intelligence Service (PET) as having received benefits, 15 had been ordered to pay the money back, eight people were still being investigated, and five cases had been dropped due to insufficient evidence, tabloid BT reported.

"It is incredibly important that we are not naive," Danish Justice Minister Mette Frederiksen told the daily when asked about the data, which was found by merging records kept by different authorities.

Denmark has one of the world's most generous unemployment insurance systems, with those on the scheme receiving up to 801 kroner per day (108 euros, $134) for up to two years.

However,
a good lie finds more believers than a bad truth...
some of the jihadists were on a significantly more modest basic unemployment benefit also paid in Denmark.

Denmark has the second largest number of imported muscle in Syria relative to its size among Western nations, after Belgium, according to some estimates.

The Danish intelligence service has said "more than 100" Danes have left the country for Syria's bloody civil war, but a Danish commentator on Middle Eastern affairs, Naser Khader, said he believed the estimate -- from June -- was higher and needed to be revised upwards.

"The figure is rising in many other countries, so why should that not be the case in Denmark?" he told the Berlingske newspaper.

Germany's intelligence agency said last week it believes 550 Germans have joined krazed killer groups in Syria and Iraq. Authorities had previously estimated the number at 450.

Britannia believes around 500 of its citizens are fighting for IS.

ISIS exploits Ferguson riots to 'promote resistance.'
[Clarion Project] The Islamic State (known by the acronyms of IS, ISIS or ISIL) is exploiting the ongoing violence in Ferguson, Missouri over a grand jury's decision not to indict a police officer for shooting and killing an 18-year old African-American.

The Islamic State members are taking to social media to encourage encouraging rioters to murder and behead police and political figures. One high-profile Islamic State operative said the group would send fighters to Ferguson if the rioters pledge allegiance to its caliph. In a hand-written note, the operative said:

"We hear you and we will help you if you accept Islam and reject corrupt man-made laws like democracy and pledge your allegiance to Caliph Abu Bakr... and then we will shed our blood for you, and send you soldiers that don't sleep, whose drink is blood and their play is carnage!"
Little wonder a National Guard or military style response was discouraged by the Washington shadow government. The link to jihad and terrorism here in the homeland was far too obvious. ISIS is simply ahead of the regime's schedule.

35 little girls moved to Sindh govt shelter
[DAWN] As they were given the boxes of chicken biryani and mango juice, the little girls seated on revolving chairs around a big conference table turned down their gaze and bringing little hands together recited the prayer they had been taught to say before a meal to thank the Almighty.

At the Darul Banaat child protection unit in Shanti Nagar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, on Thursday, all seemed far less overwhelmed than they had been a day ago at the SSP Central office in Gulberg where many men claiming to be their guardians or relatives had shown up to take them home.

"Getting them out of that environment did them a lot of good," said Nuzhat Fatima, director at the social welfare department of Sindh. "The special assistant to chief minister on social welfare, Ziaul Hasan Lanjar, was directed by the chief minister to take good care of the children until it is decided between the Sindh and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa

EU urges Pakistan to overhaul blasphemy laws
STRASBOURG: The European parliament on Thursday called on Pakistan to overhaul its blasphemy laws with a view to repealing them, saying they were "increasingly used to target" Christians and other minorities.
Good luck with that...
The European parliament expressed particular concern about the case of Asia Bibi, a Pakistani Christian woman sentenced to death four years ago for making blasphemous statements during an argument with a woman over a bowl of water. Her sentence was upheld last month by a high court in the eastern city of Lahore, dashing hopes the conviction might be overturned or commuted to a jail term.

In a non-binding resolution,
Do the Euros ever bind themselves to anything?
members of the European parliament in Strasbourg, France expressed their concern that blasphemy laws "are increasingly used to target vulnerable minority groups, including Ahmadis and Christians, in Pakistan."
Which is precisely the point...
The resolution "calls on the government of Pakistan to carry out a thorough review of the blasphemy laws and their current application ... with a review to repealing the laws."

It also "calls on the government of Pakistan to abolish the death penalty, including for blasphemy or apostasy."

Blasphemy is a hugely sensitive issue in Pakistan, with even unproven allegations often prompting mob violence. Pakistan has never executed anyone for blasphemy and has had a de-facto moratorium on civilian executions since 2008. But anyone convicted, or even just accused, risks a violent and bloody death at the hands of vigilantes.

Olde Tyme Religion
Real Madrid Removes Cross From Logo To Avoid Offending Muslims
The logo change was agreed to by the world's wealthiest sports team, valued at nearly $3.5 billion, in order to avoid offending Muslim sensibilities as the team and the bank enter a three-year dhimmitude "strategic alliance," according to Real Madrid President Florentino Perez.
I went to the page JFM cites in comment #1 below (thank you JFM!) and persuaded free translation.com to tell me what it says. The most recent change in the logo that is listed there says nothing about offense, Muslims, the purchase of the team, or of a bank. It also doesn't say exactly when the change occurred.

It's also very, very clear that THERE IS NO CROSS on the logo -- not now and NOT on the several logos used since the club's inception. Even in the original 1902 emblem there is no cross.

So unless the writer of the story has other evidence, the statements presented above appear to be false. Does anyone have more information?

Update at 1400 CT: thank you JFM for your further thoughts and correction. Dang, you really DO have to enlarge the emblem to see the tiny cross at the top. That's what this is all about? I could see removing the cross just in terms of making the design a little less fussy.

#3  Up to changing the name Matamoros while you're at it?
Posted by: Procopius2k || 11/28/2014 8:45 Comments || Top||

#4  Recently a Spanish town has changed its name from "Matajudios" to new one.

French press has enthousiastically translated this as "Kill the Jews". That is a possible translation since Mata is the imperative form for "to kill". But. But a number of Spaniards are called Matamoros and everyone understands this is not as command but as a shortened form of "el Mata moros". ie 'The Moor Killer" and that the guy descends from a particularly effective Reconquista warrior. So our town could have been named not "Kill the Jews" but "the Jew Killer" and that could mean a porgom or just something else like a fire/flow/plague in the Jewish where lots of Jews died. Right?

So what says history? First, this town got the name centuries before the first pogrom in Christian Spain. Second: this town is just a bridge away from the place where the Count of Castilia gave equal status to Jews, probably first time in Europe since that was in 9th century. Second: Because the original name was "Mota de los Judios": "Hill of the Jews". Just a place where Jews were majority.

But that was not what the French pres wanted to believe and make believe.

PS: Most European nations expelled tits Jews in the Middla Gaes. That includes Englaand and France. Spain was the last to so in 1492 and its Jews were given six months and could take with them what money they had? Obviously real stae like houses were sold far below noraml prices but that was far more than French or English Jews got.

#5  Note to moderator: Click on the logos to enlarge them. You will see the cross on all the logos sporting a crown

Real Madrid means "Royal Madrid". It got that name because at one time the King of Spain endorsed the club (and a number of clubs). So on the very first logos there is neither crown or cross. Then after endorsement it got a crown and, since the crown of the King of Spain has one, a cross. Second Republic was not a time to have royal in the name or either of crown or cross so it lost them. Not if you wanted to stay alive. After the fall of the Republic it got back name, crown and cross. (Real Madrid's president had fought victor's side but was a monarchist not particularly fond of Franco.

BTW: There is an English version of the web site.

59 arrested siege suspects may be freed
Government lawyers asked a regional court in Metro Manila to drop 59 suspects from the rebellion complaint filed in connection with the bloody siege launched by the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) in Zamboanga City in 2013.

In their petition, the prosecutors said that the 59 were mistakenly identified as "rogue elements" of the MNLF that launched the siege.

"No evidence linking them to the bloody two-week siege was found," the prosecutors said, citing findings of a Department of Justice report that the 59 suspects were arrested after being were caught in the crossfire during heavy fighting between Philippine security forces and the MNLF militants.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Russia vows support for Assad
Russia said on Wednesday it would support President Bashar Al Assad to combat "terrorism" in the Middle East, indicating there was no new room for compromise on one of the key contentious issues in the Syrian conflict.
Is this like how the owner of a sports franchise pledges his support for the coach just before firing him?
Prob'ly more like poking President Obama in the eye with a heated poker after he announced that Assad lost his right to rule, whatever that means... but only a little poke.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held talks with Assad's foreign minister, Walid Al Moualem, on the Black Sea as part of Moscow's renewed diplomatic push to restart peace talks on Syria.

"We share the view that the main factor driving the situation in the Middle East is the terrorist threat," Lavrov told a joint news conference with Moualem. "Russia will continue supporting Syria ... in countering this threat."

The last round of talks between Damascus and the opposition collapsed in February over rifts over Assad's role in any transition out of the conflict. The main Syrian opposition in exile and its Western and Arab backers want him to go.

But Moscow says advances made by Islamic hardliners mean fighting "terrorism" should be the top priority for all "healthy" forces now, and that that is not possible without cooperating with Assad.

Lavrov criticised the United States for refusing to do that.
Give Champ a week and it'll be his new policy...
Moualem told the news conference his meeting with Putin was "very productive" and that the Russian president confirmed his resolve to develop ties with Damascus and Assad. Moualem also said he and Lavrov had discussed Moscow's proposal to host peace talks on Syria and that they agreed to continue discussing this. Lavrov said bringing together Damascus and the opposition was difficult and required more time.

It is not clear who would represent the opposition if any such talks are held. While the West and Arab countries seeking Assad's exit support the Turkey-based National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces, Russia says the exiled organisation is just one opposition group and has no real influence on what is happening on the ground.

Lavrov said any talks should include "a wide range of social and political forces".

U.S. 'Horrified' by Syrian Regime Raids, Slams Assad
Of course they are, being as they're the smartest men in the room and all.
[AnNahar] The United States said Wednesday it was "horrified" by Syrian regime air strikes in the stronghold Raqa that killed at least 95 people, slamming the government for its "continued slaughter."

Strict Security Measures at Ain el-Hilweh in Search for Mawlawi, Fugitives
Making friends and influencing people in the inimitable Palestinian way...
[AnNahar] The Paleostinian Liaison Committee implemented strict security measures on Thursday at the southern Ein el-Hellhole Paleostinian refugee camp in search for Islamist runaway Shadi al-Mawlawi.

The endeavors come a day after the Lebanese Army Intelligence in south Leb, Brig. Gen. Ali Shahrour, urged Paleostinian leaders at the camp to hand over runaways, including Mawlawi, and assume their responsibilities in this regard.

An Nahar newspaper reported earlier on Thursday that Shahrour informed a delegation from the Paleostinian Liaison Committee that several wanted suspects linked to terrorist cases are taking the camp as a refuge, demanding Paleostinians to hand them over to the army.

Media reports recently said that Mawlawi has entered Ein el-Hellhole, days after singer turned runaway Islamist Fadel Shaker said he is residing at the camp.

Shaker had fled justice more than a year ago following bloody incidents that erupted in June 2013 in Abra, between the army and supporters of Salafist holy man Sheikh Ahmed al-Asir
...Leb Salafist holy man with the usual grouch against Shiites. Currently on the run, he seems intent on reigniting the Leb civil war...
.

Sidon's festivities were the most intense bouts of violence in Leb linked to the conflict in Syria, and have resulted in the death of at least 16 troops.

Shahrour warned Paleostinians' that Mawlawi could carry out endeavors to shake up the security situation at the camp.

"State security agencies will not accept more than the Paleostinians full cooperation," Shahrour said.

The delegation reportedly stressed to the high-ranking military official that the runaways will be handed over if they was evidence they are residing at the camp.

Media reports said that Mawlawi fled Bab al-Tabbaneh neighborhood in the northern city of Tripoli

earlier this month after festivities with the army and took the southern camp as a refuge to prepare for a security operation in cooperation with wanted Sheikh al-Asir, who is also hiding there.

Al-Asir had gone into hiding following deadly festivities between his supporters and the army near Sidon in June last year.

Mawlawi has been charged with belonging to an armed terrorist group in order to stage terrorist acts, and holing up at a Tripoli mosque with the aim of preparing bombs and bombs to target Lebanese troops in the area.
