Pakistan Funds Daesh/Taliban Against Afghanistan, Say Experts
[ToloNews] Pakistain continues to pursue its hostile policies towards Afghanistan by supporting Death Eater groups in their war efforts against the country, a number of Afghan political commentators said on Thursday.

They claimed that Pakistain had now mobilized the Taliban under the guise of Daesh [Islamic State]. Other countries were also coordinating with Pakistain in funding Death Eater groups such as Daesh [Islamic State].

"If there was a will to do it, we would be able to eliminate Daesh [Islamic State] in Syria and Afghanistan. I again urge that we develop the determination to defeat the Death Eaters," military expert Ajmal Sias said.

According to political experts, turbans who claim to be Daesh [Islamic State] fighters, were in-fact the Talibs who have changed their flag and operate as Daesh [Islamic State]. They receive financial and technical and military cooperation from Pakistain to destabilize Afghanistan, it is said.
According to political experts, turbans who claim to be Daesh [Islamic State] fighters, were in-fact the Talibs who have changed their flag and operate as Daesh [Islamic State]. They receive financial and technical and military cooperation from Pakistain to destabilize Afghanistan, it is said.

Abdul Hadi Arghandiwal, leader of the Hizb-e-Islami has said there are people who were neglecting the war against Daesh [Islamic State].

Experts argue that Daesh [Islamic State] fighters in Afghanistan have no link with the Daesh [Islamic State] group which operates in Iraq and Syria under the command of His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
...formerly merely the head of ISIL and a veteran of the Bagram jailhouse. Looks like a new messiah to bajillions of Moslems, like just another dead-eyed mass murder to the rest of us...
They add that Pakistain, by ignoring international pressure, created Daesh [Islamic State] to mislead the world.

The expert views come a day after President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..

, described Pakistain as a supporter of Daesh [Islamic State].

"We told Pakistain that they were using terrorism against our country," Atmar said.

"If the international community tells Pakistain that it does not want something want Daesh [Islamic State] in Afghanistan, the job will be done. For that we need common purpose," former Afghan ambassador to Britannia Ahmad Wali Massoud said.

Last year, for the first time, rumors surfaced about the presence of Daesh [Islamic State] fighters in Afghanistan.

The Afghan cops launched their first anti-Daesh [Islamic State] military operation in Helmand

province. Over the passage of time, Daesh [Islamic State] has extended operations in eastern regions. In its latest action, Daesh [Islamic State] fighters attacked civilian and military areas in Kot district of Nangarhar province.

Daesh [Islamic State] killed and maimed dozens of civilians during their offensive launched in Kot district. The attack has raised great alarm among the residents over the presence of the group in their area.

It is believed that Daesh [Islamic State] is attempting to infiltrate other central Asian counties through Afghanistan and to get control over the drug smuggling.
From an earlier Tolo article quoting Afghan National Security advisor Mohammed Hanif Atmar:
"Most of the Daesh [Islamic State] faceless myrmidons come from Pakistain and they have Pak ID cards. And they receive aid from central Asia and Gulf states, but Afghan forces are ready to fight them," Atmar said.

Shaboob plans to attack US forces prompted recent airstrike in Somalia
Al Qaeda militants in Somalia planned and prepared “imminent attacks” against U.S. forces there, according to a recent statement from U.S. Africa Command. The plans prompted a U.S. airstrike just last week against the militants in Somalia, according to the little-noticed Africom statement.

“On June 21, 2016 in southern Somalia U.S. forces conducted a self-defense strike against al-Shabaab, killing three,” said a June 23 Africom statement.

“The operation was conducted after it was assessed the terrorists were planning and preparing to conduct an imminent attack against U.S. forces,” it said.

There are about 50 U.S. forces on the ground in Somalia, in support of partner forces fighting al-Shabaab militants.

The strike comes amid a new assessment by IHS Jane’s Terrorism and Insurgency Centre that said over the course of 2015 and 2016, al-Shabaab has “been expanding capabilities and increasing the tempo of attacks.”

The U.S. has been conducting a steady stream of airstrikes against al-Shabaab over the past several months. In May, U.S. forces conducted five airstrikes against the terrorist group. One strike was conducted on May 27 against Abdullahi Haji Da’ud, a senior military commander for al-Shabaab.

Another airstrike was conducted on May 13 in southern Somalia against nine al-Shabaab forces, after it was assessed that they were “planning and preparing to conduct an imminent attack against U.S. forces,” Africom said.

“Other similar actions were undertaken on three other occasions in May, including one on May 9 and two on May 12,” Africom said in a June 17 statement.

In April, U.S. forces conducted two airstrikes, on April 1 and 2 against al-Shabaab fighters “who posed imminent threats to U.S. and partner nation forces,” a Pentagon spokesman said on April 4.

“Our forces work closely with partners to combat Al Shabaab,” Pentagon spokesman Capt. Jeff Davis said after the April strikes. “Al Shabaab has pledged allegiance to Al Qaeda, is dedicated to creating safe havens for terrorist operations, and is planning on conducting external attacks in and from Africa.”

In March, U.S. forces conducted several airstrikes and a raid against al-Shabaab targets. One airstrike was conducted on March 31 against a senior al-Shabaab leader, Hassan Ali Dhoore, and another on March 12 against Adan Garar, a member of al-Shabaab’s intelligence and security wing.

On March 5, U.S. forces targeted an al-Shabaab training camp that killed more than 150 people, and U.S. special operations forces conducted a helicopter raid with Somali troops on March 8.

Marine Gen. Thomas Waldhauser, who has been nominated to become the next U.S. commander of Africom, testified last week that there has been a slowdown in the last six months of African forces provided to Africa Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom).

“So countries such as Uganda, Burundi, Ethiopia who provide these forces, they’ve taken a little bit of a back slide,” he told the Senate Armed Services Committee on June 21. “So if confirmed, one of the first things I will do is take a look at the situation inside Somalia so we can get that movement back on track,” he said.

A recent BBC report said that allowances for troops deployed to the 22,000-strong Amisom force, which is funded by the European Union, have not been paid for at least six months. An European Union source told the BBC that last six-month payment was being withheld over “accounting issues,” but the head of Amisom then told the British outlet that correct papers had been submitted, and payment was on its way.
"accounting issues": too many bribes going to Anisom generals or not enough bribes going to European apparatchiks?
The EU has also recently cut funding to Amisom by 20 percent, according to a recent Associated Press report. Uganda’s military chief has said the country plans to withdraw its more than 6,000 troops from the mission by December 2017.

Egypt president calls for reforms to counter extremists
[IsraelTimes] Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi, who came to power after a bloody crackdown on political Islamists, calls on Wednesday for religious reforms to counter holy warriors in a speech to Muslim holy mans.

Sissi has often warned that Islamist extremism presents a vital threat to the region, which he suggested lags in development and women’s rights.

Not enough work, he adds, has been done to confront the ideology of holy warriors who have roiled the region and are waging a bloody insurgency in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula.

"We are on a mission, during one of the most difficult periods not only for Egypt, but for Egypt and all Arab and Muslim states," Sisi says in the televised speech.

"Are we the most knowledgeable of nations?" he asks, referring to Muslim countries. "Are we the most tolerant nation? Are we the nation that most respects women?"

"If you found that the flaw was only in Egypt, we’d say OK. But I wonder, in how many of these 50 (Muslim) countries is this situation present?" he asks.

Early Islamic scholars, he says, confronted sayings and traditions wrongly attributed to the Muslim prophet Mohammed. Islamic law is partly based on Mohammed’s sayings that are deemed authentic.

"We can perform the same role, but regarding other things," Sisi says, without elaborating.

"I fear that we have not until now found the real path to confronting fanaticism and extremism: look at the map of extremism in the world," he adds.

UK considers easing travel warning imposed after Tunisia attack
A phased lifting of Foreign Office advice not to to travel to Tunisia is expected to be proposed, a move that would delight a tourist sector almost wiped out by last year’s terror attack which claimed the lives of 30 British holidaymakers.

The lifting of the advice, which was imposed after the killing last June of 38 tourists on a beach near Sousse and warns against all but essential travel to every part of Tunisia, is unlikely to be proposed until after the end of Ramadan. It would have to be agreed across Whitehall, and would probably be lifted in phases, with certain areas still subject to the warning until the whole country is deemed to be safe.

The impact of the Sousse attack and the ensuing travel warnings have had a devastating effect on the Tunisian economy, leaving some hotels with as 5% occupancy.

Tourism normally accounts for 8% of the country’s GDP. Revenues for the first quarter of this year were down by 51.7% on same period in 2105, according to the central bank. The number British tourists travelling to Tunisia, previously the bulk of its summer visitors, fell by 90% after the attack.

The UK security team has been discussing a 48-point checklist of changes that need to be made by Tunisia to improve security.
The good news is that the EU checklist would have had 97 points...
One outstanding issue is whether the hotels should be required to hire armed guards from private security agencies to patrol their buildings and grounds. Tunisian law only allows state agents, such as police, to carry weapons, and any relaxation of that rule would require legislative change.
There's a good reason for that rule...
The country’s tourism minister, Selma Elloumi Rekik, said she had received assurances of a shift in Britain’s position after she held private meetings with Tobias Ellwood, a junior minister at the UK Foreign Office, last week.

Ellwood travelled to Tunisia to take part in the anniversary memorial for the tourists who were gunned down at Port el Kantaoui, near Sousse. Seiffeddine Rezgui, the gunman, was shot dead by Tunisian police in an alley.

The Tunisian ambassador to the UK, Nabil Ammar, who comes from Sousse, has made a public plea for a change in the British stance, saying that a gap now existed between the “perception of the level of security, and the real security in the country”.

He said: “Every week terrorist cells are dismantled. Terrorists are arrested or neutralised. This should give a positive image, not a negative one.

“If you take statistics, you have much less chance to die in Tunisia or to have any harm in Tunisia than so many countries close to us.”

The British security demands have ranged across improved intelligence, border controls, security at airports and hotels. Conspicuous police patrols now operate on beaches and in hotels.

As part of the upgrade in security, a small team of British trainers was initially deployed to Tunisia in March 2016 and has been providing training with a multinational team at the Explosive Ordnance Device school in Tunisia. The team will be now working with the commando unit of the Tunisian National Guard, a project undertaken at Tunisia’s request. The training over the summer will “focus on medical training, small boat handling and security operations training”.

ISIS Terrorists Used Obama's ‘Fast and Furious' Gun During Paris Attack!
[Judicial Watch] One of the guns used in the November 13, 2015 Paris terrorist attacks came from Phoenix, Arizona where the Obama administration allowed criminals to buy thousands of weapons illegally in a deadly and futile "gun-walking" operation known as "Fast and Furious."

A Report of Investigation (ROI) filed by a case agent in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (ATF) tracked the gun used in the Paris attacks to a Phoenix gun owner who sold it illegally, "off book," Judicial Watch's law enforcement sources confirm. Federal agents tracing the firearm also found the Phoenix gun owner to be in possession of an unregistered fully automatic weapon, according to law enforcement officials with firsthand knowledge of the investigation.

The investigative follow up of the Paris weapon consisted of tracking a paper trail using a 4473 form, which documents a gun's ownership history by, among other things, using serial numbers. The Phoenix gun owner that the weapon was traced back to was found to have at least two federal firearms violations--for selling one weapon illegally and possessing an unregistered automatic--but no enforcement or prosecutorial action was taken against the individual. Instead, ATF leaders went out of their way to keep the information under the radar and ensure that the gun owner's identity was "kept quiet," according to law enforcement sources involved with the case. "Agents were told, in the process of taking the fully auto, not to anger the seller to prevent him from going public," a veteran law enforcement official told Judicial Watch.

It’s not clear if the agency, which is responsible for cracking down on the illegal use and trafficking of firearms, did this because the individual was involved in the Fast and Furious gun-running scheme. An ATF spokesman, Corey Ray, at the agency’s Washington D.C. headquarters told Judicial Watch that "no firearms used in the Paris attacks have been traced" by the agency. When asked about the ROI report linking the weapon used in Paris to Phoenix, Ray said "I'm not familiar with the report you're referencing." Judicial Watch also tried contacting the Phoenix ATF office, but multiple calls were not returned.

The Grand Turk
Putin orders government to start ‘normalizing’ trade with Turkey
[IsraelTimes] Russian, Turkish presidents hold first phone call since rift began over downing of Russian plane, agree to meet

Russian President Vladimir Putin
...Second and fourth President and sixth of the Russian Federation and the first to remain sober. Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from polonium poisoning. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to Putin. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead...
on Wednesday ordered his government to begin the process of lifting sanctions imposed against The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
after Ankara shot down a Russian warplane last year.

"I ask that the Russian government begins the process of normalizing general trade and economic ties with Turkey," Putin said at a cabinet meeting following a telephone conversation with Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
First on his list were travel restrictions between the countries.

The breakthrough phone call by Putin came after Erdogan on Monday sent a letter to the Kremlin leader that Moscow said contained an apology.
"I want to start with the question of tourism ... we are lifting the administrative restrictions in this area," Putin told government ministers in televised comments.

The move came after earlier in the day Putin and Erdogan held their first phone call since Ankara downed one of Moscow’s jets in Syria last year.

A statement from the Turkish presidency said Erdogan and Putin "highlighted the importance of the normalization of bilateral relations between Turkey and Russia."

The November incident froze relations between the two nations and saw Moscow slap sanctions on Ankara.

Putin also condemned the "heinous" attack at Istanbul’s Ataturk airport Tuesday that killed at least 41 people and offered condolences to the Turkish people, the statement said.

"Reiterating their commitment to reinvigorate bilateral relations and fight terrorism together, the two leaders agreed to remain in contact and meet in person," Erdogan’s office said.

The Kremlin confirmed that the conversation took place and said a statement would be released.

The breakthrough phone call by Putin came after Erdogan on Monday sent a letter to the Kremlin leader that Moscow said contained an apology.

The downing of the plane in November ruptured relations and saw Moscow impose a raft of sanctions, including an embargo on Turkish food products and a ban on charter flights and the sale of package tours to the country. It also sparked a bitter war of words between the leaders with Putin calling it a "stab in the back" and demanding an apology from Erdogan.

Ankara has said Erdogan expressed his "regret" over the incident in Monday’s letter to Putin and asked the family of the pilot who died to "excuse us," but has not explicitly confirmed he apologized for shooting down the plane.

Kremlin front man Dmitry Peskov on Tuesday described the letter as an "important step" but warned that "there is no need to think that in several days it will be possible to normalize everything."

Turkey has argued that the Russian plane strayed into its airspace and ignored repeated warnings, but Russia insisted it did not cross the border and accused Turkey of a "planned provocation."

The countries are on opposing sides in the Syrian conflict, with Ankara backing rebels fighting to topple Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Scourge of Qusayr...
while Moscow is one of his last remaining allies.

US to ban military families in Turkey for security reasons
The United States is moving toward permanently banning families from accompanying U.S. military and civilian personnel in Turkey, reflecting worsening security conditions there, two U.S. defense sources said on June 29.

The Obama administration in March ordered the families of U.S. military and diplomatic personnel to leave the İncirlik Air Base, which has been used heavily in the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants, and other parts of southern Turkey. The move affected about 670 dependents of U.S. military personnel in southern Turkey, but 100 of them in Istanbul and Ankara were allowed to stay.

Now military officials plan to designate deployments by all U.S. military and civilian personnel to İncirlik base in Adana and other sites in Turkey as “unaccompanied” tours, the sources told Reuters. The move was under consideration before ISIL suicide bomb attacks at an Istanbul airport that killed 42 people and wounded 239 others, the sources said.

“The change reflects the continued deterioration of security conditions throughout Turkey,” said one of the sources, who was not authorized to speak publicly.

The U.S. military has about 2,200 service members and civilian employees in Turkey, with about 1,500 of those posted to the İncirlik base.

The change would not apply to U.S. personnel who are part of a “chief of mission” role or security cooperation team, the sources said.

The 100 dependents of U.S. personnel still in Turkey would be allowed to stay once the new rules took effect, and they would depart through natural attrition, said one of the sources.

which organized the ill-fated 2010 flotilla to Gaza, for its objection to a recent agreement between Turkey and Israel and its decision to launch a flotilla in the first place.

“Did you ask the then-prime minister [himself] to carry such humanitarian aid from Turkey? We had already sent the necessary aid there to Gaza by that time and we are providing aid [now]. We have sent aid to Palestine and are sending. But while we were doing this, we did everything [within the bounds of diplomacy], not for a show of strength. We will continue to do so. We did these things not with a flourish of trumpets but with decency and propriety, and we are continuing to do this,” Erdoğan said on June 29 at an fast breaking iftar dinner organized for presidential palace personnel.

President Erdoğan previously stated that the İHH was an aid organization which risked death for their cause.

“What is this İHH? It is a relief organization which carries medicine and food to Gazan babies and risks death for this,” Erdoğan said in 2014.
IHH is particularly good at propaganda, and decent in terms of moving guns and ammo...
He also said the İHH had sent aid to a number of countries, adding that the “innocent and the poor all over the world gladdened” when they saw the organization.
The widows and orphans were particularly happy that IHH could help with the ammo...
Ankara and Tel Aviv signed a deal to normalize ties on June 28 after six years of strained relations. Israel’s security cabinet approved the deal on June 29. The deal is expected to be approved at the Turkish Parliament too.

Diplomatic relations between Turkey and Israel were suspended in 2010 after Israeli forces raided a convoy of aid ships headed by the Mavi Marmara that was attempting to break the blockade of Gaza, killing 10 Turkish activists.

The president also added that a ship loaded with 14,000 tons of humanitarian aid for Gaza will set out for the Ashdod port on July 1 from the southern port of Mersin.

Turkish police crack down on ISIL as death toll rises
A total of 22 people accused of having links to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) were detained in Istanbul and the western province of İzmir on June 30, as Turkish police launched a wide-scale crackdown on the group following the Istanbul Atatürk Airport suicide attacks that killed 44 people and wounded 239.

A total of 13 people, four of whom are foreigners, have been detained in Istanbul as police initiated a dawn operation on 16 different addresses in several districts, including Pendik, Başakşehir and Sultanbeyli.

In İzmir, police simultaneously raided various addresses in the Konak, Buca, Karabağlar and Bornova districts early in the morning, detaining nine people suspected of being ISIL members.

In the operation conducted by some 200 police officers, a number of organizational documents, three rifles and digital data were seized. Police said the detainees were in contact with group members in Syria and were acting in İzmir for the group’s benefit, providing financial support, recruits, and logistical support.

Meanwhile, details of the ISIL suicide bomb attack at Istanbul Atatürk Airport continue to emerge, with police finding that the three bombers were of Russian, Uzbek and Kyrgyz nationality.

Finding the passport of the Russian attacker in a cell house in Istanbul’s Fatih district, police said he was of Dagestani origin and entered Turkey with a false passport around one month ago.

The police investigation further revealed that the three bombers stayed in the apartment in Fatih ahead of the attack. The reports showed that the attackers rented the flat three months ago by making a cash payment.

Police have also revealed critical details on how the attack was organized and carried out. According to the reports, the attackers initially took a taxi from a street close to Vatan Street in the Fatih district with three backpacks and luggage and told the driver to take them to the Atatürk Airport.

Arriving at the airport, without being stopped for a police check, the attackers got out of the taxi in front of the international arrivals terminal. The attackers, who later wore their suicide belts and took up their Kalashnikovs hidden in their luggage, left the gate with each of them heading their planned spots to carry out the attacks.

One of the attackers headed to the airport’s parking garage, the other headed to international arrival Gate A, and the third one headed to the international departures terminal, sources said. They added that all of the deaths occurred in attacks at terminals and no deaths were reported from the attack in the parking garage.

Reports also state that the attackers planned to take dozens of passengers hostage inside the terminal and then blow them up together with themselves. As they were countered by a police officer at the terminal’s entrance, the plot was not carried out as planned, reports added.

Feds Tell Florida Agencies To Deny Public Records Requests On Orlando Attack
While Attorney General Loretta Lynch holds firm to her claim that the motive of Orlando terrorist Omar Mateen may never be known, the FBI is instructing Florida agencies that responded to the attack that night to deny requests for public records pertaining to the case.

In response to a lawsuit by local media seeking the release of the 911 audio, the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office released a letter they got from the FBI instructing them to deny all requests for information and refer news outlets seeking information to the feds, the Orlando Sentinel reports.

The letter reads, in part:

As you know, this is an active, on-going investigation being conducted by the FBI. The FBI considers information obtained from the state and local enforcement agencies in furtherance of its investigation to be evidence or potential evidence. Accordingly, the FBI is concerned that public disclosure of such records or information at this time will adversely affect our ability to effectively investigate the shooting and bring the matter to resolution; could endanger the safety of law enforcement officers, and other individuals who have participated in or are otherwise connected with the investigation; and risks unduly prejudicing any prosecutions that may result from the investigation.

The letter is signed by Paul Wysopal, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Tampa field office.

Those recordings and all records are public records under Florida law and are subject to freedom of information requests.

The “FBI doesn’t have the authority to hijack Florida’s constitution, which guarantees us a right of access to all non-exempt public records,” Barbara Petersen, President of the First Amendment Foundation, told the Orlando Sentinel.

On orders from the FBI, the city of Orlando has thus far refused to release any records, they say, “out of respect for the Pulse shooting victims and the families” and at the “direction of the FBI,” according to the Sentinel.
Time for Judicial Watch to file another lawsuit...
In the aftermath of the terrorist attack which left 49 people dead and 53 wounded, the White House shifted the narrative away from a terrorist attack to an attempt to impose gun control and claims of homophobia. Mateen was reported to have been a self-loathing gay man, but reports say the FBI has found zero evidence to substantiate that claim.

#1  Mr. FBI Special Agent in Charge ain't so special. I am not sure what he is investigating...the crime already occurred, the local police killed the bad guy. The FBI missed the boat on that one, all they are doing is documenting the carnage... Hell, it doesn't look like they can even get a charge on Mateen's wife, if they did get a warrant, the FBI couldn't find her - they lost her last week. The FBI is irrelevant.

Jordanian officials sold CIA-supplied weapons — report
[IsraelTimes] Millions of dollars in military equipment for Syrian rebels said stolen, traded on black market

Jordanian intelligence officials stole millions of dollars of weapons that the CIA and Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
had supplied for Syrian rebels, then sold them on the black market, The New York Times
...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...
and al-Jazeera reported.

The military equipment had been shipped into Jordan as part of the Central Intelligence Agency’s secret program to train and equip moderate Syrian rebels to fight troops loyal to Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Terror of Aleppo ...
Citing unnamed American and Jordanian officials, the Times and al-Jazeera reported Sunday that some of these weapons were used in a November shooting at a police training facility in Amman. Two American contractors, two Jordanians and one South African were bumped off in the attack.

The Times and al-Jazeera said the FBI has been investigating the case for months.

The stolen weapons include Kalashnikov assault rifles, mortars and rocket-propelled grenades and the black market is newly awash with arms, the reports said.

Investigators aren’t sure what happened to most of the weapons but many are likely to have ended up in the hands of rural Jordanian tribes, criminals or shipped to other countries.

The FBI and CIA declined to comment.

Arab intelligence services and the CIA have been training rebels since 2013 under the code name Timber Sycamore. The training effort is run from Jordan because of its proximity to Syria.

It is separate from Pentagon efforts in northern Syria to train and equip rebel fighters to attack the Islamic State

group.

Though the program is classified, officials told the Times and al-Jazeera that the CIA has trained thousands of rebels in the past three years.

The fighters had been making progress against Syrian regime troops until Russia joined the war last year on Assad’s side.

Abu Sayyaf escapee recaptured in Zamboanga City
{Sun Star] Philippine police and military have recaptured an Abu Sayyaf militant, who escaped as he was being transported to the Zamboanga City Reformatory Center (ZCRC) on June 21.

Zamboanga City police officer Luisito Magnaye said Alhnur Usup was recaptured inside a mosque Thursday afternoon in the village of Mampang. Magnaye said Usup escaped as police transported him and his companion, Jamal Labuan, to the ZCRC last week.

Magnaye said Usup is a spotter for the Abu Sayyaf who finds prospective targets for kidnapping in the city. Usup, also known as Arab-Arab and Arab Puti, is a follower of Sulu-based Abu Sayyaf leader Idang Susukan.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran covertly recruits Afghan Shias to fight in Syria
Iran is covertly recruiting hundreds of Afghan Shias in Afghanistan to fight for Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, drawing them out of their own conflict-ridden country and into another war in which Afghanistan plays no official part.

The Afghan fighters are often impoverished, religiously devout or ostracised from society, looking for money, social acceptance and a sense of purpose that they are unable to find at home.

Iran’s recruitment of Afghan migrants and refugees within its own borders has been documented. But similar Iranian activities inside Afghanistan had previously gone unreported.
