Britain's MI5 Says Running over 500 Terror Probes
[An Nahar] Britannia is currently running more than 500 terror investigations, with its intelligence services operating on a bigger scale due to the increase in threats, the head of MI5 said Tuesday.

"The scale at which we are operating is greater than ever before," said Andrew Parker, head of Britannia's domestic intelligence agency, in a speech in London.

"We are now running well over 500 live operations involving around 3,000 individuals known to be currently involved in bad boy activity in some way."

British security forces are confronted by an increasing number of attack plots and have managed to foil 20 over the past four years, the MI5 chief said.

"Just in the last seven months, we and the police have thwarted seven terrorist plots by Islamist bad boys" of the total 20.

Britannia has been struck by five terror attacks so far this year, four in London and one in Manchester. They included bombings and deadly violence with vehicles and knives.

Some of the assailants were among the 20,000 people known to security services.

Parker said the threat is "more diverse than I've ever known" and involves "snuffies of all ages, genders and backgrounds."

- Faster, harder to detect -
And he warned the plots could be carried out very quickly.

"Attacks can sometimes accelerate from inception through planning to action in just a handful of days," he said.

"This pace, together with the way snuffies can exploit safe spaces online can make threats harder to detect and give us a smaller window to intervene."

Plots are developed both within the UK, abroad and online, he said, warning of the ease with which potential attackers can learn how to build a bomb on the internet.

"We can't hope to stop everything," he admitted, despite a record 379 terror-related arrests in the 12 months to June.

Four assailants were killed by police this year during the course of attacks in London: one outside parliament and three others near London Bridge.

Another bad boy died in a suicide kaboom in Manchester.

Two other men have been charged over separate terror attacks -- a bomb which partially detonated on the London Underground last month, and an attack on worshipers outside a mosque in the capital in June.

George Soros has given $18 billion to his pro-democracy foundation
[Money.CNN] Investor and philanthropist George Soros has moved $18 billion to his foundation -- the majority of his estimated $24.6 billion fortune.

The Open Society Foundations, which seeks to promote democracy around the globe, confirmed the massive donation on Tuesday. A foundation official told CNNMoney in an emailed statement the move "reflects an ongoing process of asset transfer that has been underway for several years."

The Wall Street Journal first reported the transfer of the funds.

The Open Society Foundations has outposts in more than 100 countries, according to the organization's website. It has worked to combat authoritarianism, promote human rights, and support "marginalized" groups -- including refugees, the LGBT community, and minorities.

Soros, 87, "plans to leave the vast majority of his wealth to the Open Society Foundations," the official said.

The foundation has spent about $14 billion since the 1980s, according to spokesperson Laura Silber.
Soooooo, he's dropped an egg essentially as large as his combined fundings of the past 30 years. Big move. Big plans. Big news to come?
She said its current value is $18 billion, potentially making it larger than the Ford Foundation and the second-largest charity behind tech billionaire Bill Gates's foundation, based on figures from the National Philanthropic Trust.

#3  It's different when a liberal does tax 'evasion', apparently.

For what it's worth you can't carry charitable contributions back on a U.S. Federal 1040 tax return but the unused amount does carry forward and it's limited on the years that it's used.

They were going to arrest King but the deal was canceled. His funding was from the communists. Soros has done the same thing. The problem is the balloon stays inflated as long as the money comes in. He has his own welfare dependent people. I wonder what return on his investment is expected. Trump has set him back years.

US court rejects Guantanamo detainee’s appeal
[DAWN] The US Supreme Court on Monday paved the way for a Guantanamo Bay detainee accused of being the criminal mastermind of the 2000 bombing of the guided-missile destroyer USS Cole in a Yemeni port to go on trial before an American war crimes military tribunal.

The justices declined to hear an appeal by Saudi defendant Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, who argues that the tribunal lacks the jurisdiction to conduct the trial.

His lawyers said that because the United States was not engaged in "hostilities" with Al Qaeda, which carried out the bombing, at the time of the attack, his acts were not crimes of war.

A three-judge panel of the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled against him on a 2-1 vote in August 2016. His trial is due to be held at the Guantanamo Bay where he has been held since 2006.

#1  Yamashita vs Styer

[No. L-129. December 19, 1945]TOMOYUKI YAMASHITA, petitioner, vs. WILHELM D. STYER, Commanding General,United States Army Forces, Western Pacific, respondent

1.HABEAS CORPUS; PRISONER OF WAR; IMPROPER WHEN RELEASE OFPETITIONER is NOT SOUGHT; DEGREE OF CONFINEMENT A MATTER OF MILITARY MEASURE.

A petition for habeas corpus is untenable when it seeks no discharge of petitioner from confinement but merely a restoration to his former status as a prisoner of war, to be interned, not confined. The relative difference as to the degree of confinement in such case is a matter of military measure, disciplinary in character, beyond the jurisdiction of civil courts.

2.PROHIBITION; CANNOT ISSUE AGAINST ONE NOT MADE PARTY RESPONDENT.

As the military commission is not made party respondent, although it may be acting,as alleged, without jurisdiction, no order may be issued requiring it to refrain from trying the petitioner.

3.ID.; JURISDICTION OF ClVIL COURTS OVER UNITED STATES ARMY DURINGSTATE OF WAR.

The civil courts have no jurisdiction over the United States Army before the state of war expires, and any attempt to exercise such jurisdiction would be considered as a violation of this country's faith, which this court should not bethe last to keep and uphold.

4.ID.; ID.; TERMINATION OF WAR.

War is not ended simply because hostilities have ceased. After cessation of armed hostilities, incidents of war may remain pending which should be disposed of as in time of war. "An important incident to aconduct of war is the adoption of measures by the military command not only to repel and defeat the enemies but to seize and subject to disciplinary measures those enemies who in their attempt to thwart or impede our military effort have violated the law of war."

Pakistan wants to cooperate in bringing peace to Afghanistan, NSA Janjua tells British envoy
[DAWN] Pakistain wants to extend its complete cooperation in bringing peace and stability in Afghanistan and no one should be allowed to ruin the cordial relations between the two countries by indulging in the blame game, National Security Adviser (NSA) Nasser Janjua informed Britannia's Special Representative on Afghanistan and Pakistain, Owen Jenkin, on Tuesday.

Jenkin and High Commissioner Thomas Drew had called on Janjua to discuss the various aspects of the prevailing situation as well as a way forward to bring peace and stability in the country as well as the region, read a statement issued after the meeting.

Janjua expressed satisfaction over the recent positive developments between Pakistain and Afghanistan and said that Islamabad recognises the prevailing optimism very positively and more so as an opportunity to work together.

"The army chief's visit to Afghanistan and the reciprocal warmth shown by Afghanistan has opened a new door to re-established our cooperative framework to proceed further," he said while appreciating Afghanistan's Caped President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
for presenting a cordial and cooperative outlook of his country.

"All we need is the positivity and confidence from the governments of Afghanistan and United States. We should not be hurt anymore by blame game. It is not by way of coercion but surely by way of a greater understanding that Pakistain wants to extend full cooperation to help seek peace and stability in Afghanistan," the NSA was quoted as saying.

"We understand that we have a common future with Afghanistan " he added.

Janjua reiterated that Pakistain and Afghanistan needed to resume and strengthen political, diplomatic, military and intelligence cooperative framework at all levels

Death Toll from US Drone Strike in Pakistan Rises to 26
[An Nahar] The corpse count from a dronezap on a compound used by the Taliban
...Arabic for students...
-allied Haqqani network has risen to 26, officials said Tuesday, less than a week after a US-Canadian family held captive by the turbans was rescued.

The barrage on Monday targeted a meeting of Haqqani fighters in Pakistain's remote tribal Kurram district along the Afghan border in the deadliest attack on the group this year.

"First dronezap killed five fighters from Haqqani network and minutes apart a second drone then fired two more missiles after turbans arrived to retrieve dead bodies from the rubble," a senior government official in Kurram told AFP Tuesday.

"So far 26 dead bodies have been retrieved and drones are still flying in the sky," the official said.

The US has increased pressure on Pakistain in recent months to crack down on the outfit.

A second government official in Kurram confirmed the dronezaps and the new corpse count.

Both officials said the strikes took place on the border with Afghanistan, with part of the compound sited in Afghan territory.

Hamas Says Unity Deal at Risk if Abbas Does Not End Sanctions
[An Nahar] Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", warned on Tuesday that Paleostinian president the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
's delay in easing sanctions on Gazoo was putting at risk a landmark unity deal signed last week.

"The continuation of the punitive measures against our people in Gazoo a month after the dissolution of the administrative council spoils the general atmosphere for reconciliation," a party front man said in a statement to Hamas media.

Islamist group Hamas last month agreed to dissolve its administrative council, seen as a rival government in Gazoo, and return civilian power in the enclave to the Paleostinian Authority a decade after seizing it in a near civil war.

Chief among their demands, however, was that Abbas drop a series of measures taken against Gazoo.

Among these were reductions in energy payments for the territory which left its two million residents with only a few hours of mains electricity per day.

Hamas is due to hand over Gazoo's border crossings by November 1 ahead of a full transfer of power by December 1.

The PA's top border official visited Gazoo on Monday.

Previous reconciliation agreements between Hamas and Abbas's Fatah, based in the occupied West Bank, have collapsed over implementation of specific issues.

Security control of the Gazoo Strip is expected to be a major stumbling block, with Hamas refusing to disarm its 25,000-strong armed wing.

Israel Says No Talks with Palestinian Govt. that Includes Armed Hamas
[An Nahar] Israel's government decided Tuesday not to negotiate with a Paleostinian unity government that includes Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, if the Islamist movement does not disarm, recognize the country and give up violence.

The decision by Israel's security cabinet, announced in a statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office, comes after rival Paleostinian movements Fatah and Hamas signed a landmark unity deal last week aimed at ending their decade-long split.

The statement said negotiations would not be held until a range of conditions were met.

Beyond the initial three, it also said Hamas must no longer be supported by Iran, which provides it with military assistance.

In addition, it said the remains of two missing Israeli soldiers must be returned from the Gazoo Strip to Israel.

582,000 Rohingya to Bangladesh from Myanmar Since August 25, Says UN
[An Nahar] Some 582,000 Rohingya refugees have fled their homes in Myanmar and arrived in Bangladesh since late August, the United Nations said Tuesday, warning that thousands more were stranded at the border.

The UN refugee agency said 582,000 members of the Rohingya community had crossed into Bangladesh since August 25, marking a jump of 45,000 from the 537,000 figure given by the UN at the weekend.

Iran Warns Europe against New Nuke Deal Conditions
[An Nahar] A top adviser to Iran's supreme leader warned European governments on Tuesday against imposing new conditions on the nuclear deal.

"To say that they accept the JCPOA (nuclear deal) but should negotiate on Iran's regional presence or talk about Iran's missile defenses is to set conditions on the JCPOA, and this is not at all acceptable," said Ali Akbar Velayati, senior foreign policy adviser to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

"This is not Europeans' right. The JCPOA has no conditions and it must be implemented according to what was signed," he said in comments carried by the state broadcaster.

In a call with his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani on Friday, French President Emmanuel Macron said talks on regional security and Iran's ballistic missile program were necessary to ensure the survival of the 2015 nuclear deal.

Without referring directly to Macron, Velayati said European leaders "should take more care in their remarks and demands."

IS Jihadists Sliding from Defeat to Defeat
[An Nahar] The Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group seized swathes of Iraq and Syria in 2014, but its self-declared caliphate has now been crushed and it has lost its de facto Syrian capital Raqa.

Here are some of the major defeats IS has suffered as it faced offensives on multiple fronts in its ferocious battle for survival.

- Syria -
KOBANE: The Kurdish town in northern Syria became an early symbol of the fight against IS when the jihadists were driven out by U.S.-backed Kurdish forces in January 2015 after a battle of more than four months.

PALMYRA: This ancient desert city was seized by IS in May 2015 when the jihadists blew up UNESCO-listed Roman-era temples and looted ancient relics.

Syrian regime forces backed by allied militia and Russian warplanes ousted them in March 2016, but the Lions of Islam won back control by the end of that year before being expelled a second time in March 2017.

MANBIJ: IS seized this strategic town near the border with The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
in 2014 and used it as a hub for moving jihadists and supplies to and from Europe.

It was recaptured in August 2016 after a two-month battle led by a coalition of Arab and Kurdish fighters backed by U.S. air strikes.

DABIQ: Syrian rebels supported by Ottoman Turkish warplanes and artillery captured Dabiq in October 2016. Under IS control since August 2014, the fight for the city was significant because of a prophecy that Christian and Moslem forces will battle there at the end of time.

RAQA: A U.S.-backed alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters launched an operation to capture Raqa in November 2016. The battle for Raqa saw months of brutal urban warfare that leveled parts of the city as jets from a U.S.-led coalition pounded the jihadists' dwindling foothold.

On October 17, 2017, the U.S.-backed force announced it had "taken full control of Raqa" after storming the final few IS holdouts.

DEIR EZZOR: In early September 2017, Russian-backed Syrian forces broke a three-year IS siege of a government enclave in this eastern city before ousting the jihadists from much of the rest of it.

Regime forces have simultaneously pushed down the Euphrates valley towards the Iraqi border. On October 14, they captured the IS-held town of Mayadeen, some 45 kilometers (30 miles) downstream.

HAMA/HOMS: Government forces supported by Russian jets also pushed IS out of its last toehold in Hama province in early October. But the group still has a presence in neighboring Homs province, where it has looked to stage a counterattack.

- Iraq -
TIKRIT: The hometown of executed dictator Saddam Hussein, north of Baghdad, fell to IS in June 2014. It was retaken in March 2015 by Iraqi troops, police and Shiite-dominated paramilitary forces.

SINJAR: Iraqi Kurdish forces backed by U.S.-led coalition air strikes captured this northwestern town in November 2015, a year after the jihadists overran it killing or abducting into sex slavery thousands of its Yazidi Kurdish residents.

RAMADI/FALLUJAH: The capital of Anbar, Iraq's largest province, Ramadi was declared fully recaptured in February 2016. Neighboring Fallujah,
... the City of Mosques, which might have somthing to do with why it's not called Center of Prosperity or a really nice place to raise your kids...
the first Iraqi city seized by jihadists in January 2014, was retaken in June 2016.

QAYYARAH: Iraqi forces backed by coalition aircraft retook Qayyarah in August 2016, providing Baghdad with a platform to move on djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, the country's second city 60 kilometers (40 miles) away.

MOSUL: Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared victory in Mosul on July 9 this year after a nine-month offensive that a senior U.S. commander called "the most significant urban combat to take place since World War II."

TAL AFAR: The last major IS urban stronghold in northern Iraq was declared "liberated" on August 31.

HAWIJA: Iraqi forces backed by paramilitaries and U.S. air power claimed the recapture of this besieged IS enclave on October 5 after a two-week offensive.

EUPHRATES VALLEY: Iraqi forces have also pushed up the Euphrates river to dislodge IS from a stretch adjoining the Syrian border in what the U.S. has billed as the "final large fight" against the jihadists in the country.

After the recapture of the town of Anna, some 2,000 IS fighters are believed to be cornered in an area including the towns of Rawa and al-Qaim.
