#4  At the start of the Vietnam conflict the Green Berets had several teams in the Army Reserves (I had a former co-worker that was a junior enlisted member in the Boise Idaho Reserve unit). Don't know how that worked out for their readiness, it was when the Special Forces were the "bastard child" of the Army.

#5  Skid gets it. They've figured out a way to get to Goldwater-Nichols SOF money, which is separate from big army. Special Mission Units (SMU), JSOC, etc, are Tier-1 SOF. SF Groups are Teir-2. Very, very difficult to meet readiness objectives.... going to meetings once a month in a part-time transportation unit, let alone Tier-1 SOF. If it weren't so dangerous, it would be almost laughable.

I see 'Posse Comitatus Act' FOAD written all over this one, but that is just me.

#8  5/19 SF Bn is 100% NG. Damn good unit. Co A is CA, Co B is CO, Co C is TX. Co D (Supt/MI), SWD (Special Warfare Trainign Det) and HHD (ODet Charlie) is Colorado too. I knew a lot of them. Every bit as capable - they were one of the first to deploy behind the Deltas/SEALs into N part of OEF and operate cross border from Uzibekistan.

Note well: National Guard does not mean its all part time on weekends and summers. There are permanent active billets in these units that are 24x7x365, full time for those in them.

#10  As I recall, the first units were volunteered by their command, which promptly got updated TO&E, for the entire command.

#11  Don't know about that Skid. But I do know that making it through A&S and the 'Q' course at Bragg does NOT automatically qualify one for assignment to a Special Mission Unit (SMU) operational squadron. A bit more to it than that.
Posted by: Besoeker || 10/30/2014 22:15 Comments || Top||

#12  I should qualify #11 by saying successful completion of SFQC didn't used to automatically qualify one for assignment to a SMU. In today's political climate, I suppose anything could happen.

Egyptian Reports: Hamas Man Smuggled Arms For Deadly Terror Attack
[Ynet] Reports in Egypt claim that three Lions of Islam affiliated with Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, were involved in smuggling arms and munitions into Sinai that were used for last Friday's terror attack that killed more than two dozen Egyptian soldiers, Al Yom Al Masri reported.

Al Aharam, another Egyptian paper, said that investigation into the attack revelaed numerous links to Hamas' military wing.

Egypt Begins Work On Gaza Buffer Zone
Serious efficiency -- impressive! The army only gave the residents 48 hours to move out yesterday. The Mamluks are seriously displeased.
Anyone think that Champ is going to call Sisi a 'chickenshit' for building a border fence?
[IsraelTimes] Egypt began setting up a buffer zone along its border with Gazoo Wednesday to prevent bully boy infiltration and arms smuggling following a wave of deadly attacks.

The move, which is set to result in the demolition of hundreds of homes, comes after a suicide kaboom in the Sinai Peninsula killed at least 30 soldiers on Friday.

A bigwig in northern Sinai said the creation of the buffer with the Paleostinian territory was "vital for national security and stability."

The authorities want to establish a 500-meter wide buffer along about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) of the border with Gazoo, according to officials.

They said about 800 homes would be demolished.

Witnesses in the border town of Rafah reported seeing dozens of families leaving along with trucks loaded with furniture.

Bulldozers were reported to have begun destroying several long-abandoned houses along the frontier.

Egypt suspects Paleostinian Lions of Islam of aiding jihadist attacks that have increased since the army ousted Islamist president Mohammed Morsi last year.

The military has also stepped up the destruction of tunnels with Gazoo that it says are used to smuggle arms.

Following Friday's bombing, Egypt imposed a three-month state of emergency in parts of northern Sinai and closed the Rafah crossing into Gazoo -- the only entry to the Paleostinian territory not controlled by Israel.

President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi has said the attack was carried out with "external support," ordering heightened security measures.

Nobody has grabbed credit for the bombing.

Jihadists in the peninsula have killed scores of coppers and soldiers since Morsi's overthrow, vowing Dire Revenge against a police crackdown on his supporters that has left more than 1,400 dead.

Western Libya military officers back Libya Dawn
[Libya Herald]

Thinni indicates willingness to negotiate with armed groups
[Libya Herald] Libyan Prime Minister Abdullah Al-Thinni has directly stated, for the first time, that he is willing to negotiate with gangs.

In an interview in Khartoum with BBC Arabic Service, Thinni said he would be willing to negotiate if the groups would agree to disarm and quit from Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
. He also said negotiations would be dependent upon these groups' willingness to recognise the House of Representatives (HoR) and the legitimacy of his government.

It is unlikely that the Misratan-led Libya Dawn
...aka Fajr Libya, the Islamist operation launched to counter that of General Khalifa Haftar (Operation Dignity). It is made up of the Libya Shield militia (Misrata and Moslem Brotherhood), Libya Revolutionaries Operations Room (Moslem Brotherhood), and Tripoli Brigade (close to Abdul Hakim Belhaj, head of Al-Watan party). Financing and moral support come from Turkey and Qatar...
militias will agree to such terms. From the beginning they have refused to recognise the legitimacy of the HoR and have used that as a primary reason for their hold on the capital.

The Prime Minister's announcement is reported to be linked to claims of a split within the HoR over whether or not there should be negotiations with those who oppose them. Reports that some members were trying to gather support to dismiss him because he was unacceptable to those boycotting the HoR have not been confirmed but sources in the House have spoken of a row involving at least two prominent Benghazi members over the issue dialogue. Aisa Al-Araibi is alleged to have told Siham Sirghua that there could be no negotiations with the opposition and that she should resign for supporting such moves.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Russian fears over IS increasing
Over the past days, there have been signs that Russia is increasingly concerned about the threat posed by the Islamic State (IS).

On October 28, the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) made a number of arrests in Moscow of men suspected of collaborating with IS. Russian media reports say dozens of suspects were nabbed. Among them were six Azerbaijanis suspected of being IS accomplices.

The Moscow arrests came after the Prosecutor-General's office announced on October 27 that some pro-IS accounts on the Russian social networking site VKontakte had been closed.

Outside of the concerns of the Russian government and security services, it is indisputable that IS is a concern for ordinary Russians. For example, reports this week claim that a Russian citizen, Sergei Gorbunov, was executed by IS earlier this year. Gorbunov was revealed to be a hostage in Syria in October 2013, when a video appeared on YouTube in which he asked for a ransom to be paid.

Gorbunov was captured by Russian-speaking militants from the faction Jaish Al-Muhajireen Wal-Ansar, which at the time was led by Umar Shishani. When Umar Shishani left Jaish Al-Muhajireen Wal-Ansar for IS, Gorbunov was reportedly transferred as well.

Another Russian citizen, a tourist named Konstantin Zhuravlev, is also being held hostage in Syria, by the Liwa Al-Tawheed faction.

China-Japan-Koreas
China, Afghanistan agree to crackdown on Xinjiang militants
China and Afghanistan have agreed to step up the crackdown on Uighur militant training camps in Xinjiang province, as China eyed major investments in the Afghanistan's rich mineral and oil sectors.

Official media has reported that leaders of the two countries reached a "new important consensus" to combat the East Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM), an Uighur separatist organization demanding independence for Xinjiang, which borders Afghanistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

Afghanistan's President Ghani, who arrived here yesterday on his first official visit abroad, held talks with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping and top security officials. Chinese Foreign Ministry official Kong Xuanyou said, "President Ghani said that the new Afghan government will firmly support China to fight the ETIM. The two sides reached a new important consensus on joint efforts in that regard."

Ghani told Xi that "Afghanistan will not allow any activities that threaten China's (security) on Afghan territory."

ETIM, an Al Qaeda linked group is reported to have training camps in Pakistan's tribal areas as well as in Afghanistan. Several ETIM members were reportedly killed in air raids conducted by Pakistan recently.

China has stepped up their border vigil both in Kashgar, the town connecting PoK and the narrow corridor connecting Afghanistan.

Law and parliamentary affairs minister Imtiaz Shahid Qureshi told Dawn that PTI would support its coalition partner on the matter.

He expressed ignorance about keeping the resolution pending in the assembly secretariat.

The minister said some politicians had reservations about the resolution and was not sure if the Awami National Party

the PTI-led provincial government did not issue any statement to praise the teenage activist for girls' education.

ANP MPA Syed Jafar Shah had submitted the resolution to the assembly secretariat on October 20, which has so far not been brought on the house's agenda.

Jafar Shah told news hounds that he had requested Speaker Asad Qaisar to put the resolution on the agenda but the latter showed reluctance.

Provinces unwilling to part with lucrative polio programme
[DAWN] The rapid and uncontrolled spread of polio
...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. Since the development of polio vaccines the disease has been largely wiped out in the civilized world. However, since the vaccine is known to make Moslem pee-pees shrink and renders females sterile, bookish, and unsubmissive it is not widely used by the turban and automatic weapons set...
through Pakistain has the whole world on edge. Nearly all international observers have admitted that the polio crisis in Pakistain has reached disastrous proportions and immediate steps are necessary to stem the spread of the "Pakistain poliovirus" which has already caused deaths and paralysis in Pakistain, Afghanistan, the Middle East and parts of Africa.

But the provinces -- who are responsible for the all-important portfolio of health -- seem unwilling to let go of the polio lucrative programme that their governments have all but driven into the ground.

A meeting of the inter-provincial steering committee, chaired by National Health Services (NHS) Minister Saira Afzal Tarar, was convened on Wednesday to discuss whether the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) should be given the job of combating polio in the country.

The case for the NDMA had been made by the recently published report of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative's Independent Monitoring Board (IMB), which describes the NDMA as "bringing can-do to can't do". The report is highly critical of the Pakistain government's unwillingness to innovate in the search for solutions to the spiraling polio crisis. It holds up the example of Nigeria, which introduced health camps and empowered an Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) which it is still using to contain the threat of Ebola inside its borders.

Pakistan Jamaat questions its govt's silence over Nizami verdict

Pakistain has condemned the verdict and questioned Pakistain government's silence about the death sentence for Bangladesh Jamaat Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami
...During the liberation war of 1971, Nizami formed the Al-Badr Force and acted as its supreme commander. The Al-Badr militia took active part in rape, extortion, looting and killing of Bangladeshis who supported the liberation, including a pre-planned massacre on December 14, 1971, when the Al-Badr militia along with Pakistan Army rounded up hundreds of doctors, professors, writers, and other Bengali intellectuals, and executed them...

"The decision of a fake court was the height of tyranny and death sentence had been given to a totally innocent person. He said that such measures could not prolong the rule of BD Premier Haseena Wajid [sic]," the website read.

Sirajul also claimed that Zulfikar Ali Bhutto

Mi-28 Russian helicopters join service in Iraq
[Iraq News] The Iraqi Ministry of Defense assured the entrance of the Russian helicopter (Night Hunter) to the service to support terrorism fighting and Iraqi infantry forces.

A statement by the MoD received by IraqiNews.com cited "Minister of Defense Khalid al-Obaidi accompanied by several military commanders observed on Wednesday the final stage of preparing and arming the first group of the Russian modern fighting helicopters (MI-28) in a step towards sending them to specified air bases."

"These helicopters which are known as the Night Hunter will increase the efficiency of the Iraqi Army Air Force in its war against terrorism," the statement added.

"This is the first group of helicopters included by the contract concluded with the Republic of Russia to provide Iraqi Army with modern fighting helicopters," the statement concluded.

#3  I was curious too who the pilots would be.

Link Altogether Bagdad will take delivery of 40 Mi-28NE and Mi-35 helicopters and will use the helicopters for border control and anti-terrorism efforts.

The first group of Iraqi pilots and technicians passed the necessary training at Torzhok training center in autumn 2013.

Another link, just to confirm. Al-Bayati also specified that all required trainings were received by Iraqi pilot for “Night Hunter” helicopters which are similar to “Apache” in terms of capacity and efficiency.

#4  Steve, that's the deal. The pool of current pilots for Hind N's and HIP's is a lot bigger that the one of qualified Apache drivers; also,
mechanics should be easier to come by. Not just bigger pool, but more likely to get them to take the job.

Jordan warns of forced displacement of Arab Christians
[Xinhua] King Abdullah II of Jordan Wednesday warned of the forced displacement of Arab Christians in some unrest-hit neighboring countries, the state-run Petra news agency reported.

#1  Displace them right into the West Bank. Take an equal number of Muslims into Jordan to replace them. Watch the world become a slightly better place by the trade.

#3  I don't believe Christians living in the Moslem world have any effect on the sanity of the host nations. I think of them more as hostages.

I also think the jordanians won't take any crap from the Palestinians after Arafat tried to take over back in the day.

MILF to form political party for 2016 elections
A senior member of the MILF has confirmed they would form a political party for the 2016 election. MILF spokesman Mohagher Iqbal said, "We have already started to organize the MILF political party because as a group coming from a conflict situation to a peace settlement equation, we have to engage in regular political exercise — meaning not through the bullets anymore but through the ballot."

Iqbal admitted they have yet to determine which candidates will run in the May 2016 election.

Filipinos are to elect President Aquino's successor, 12 senators, congressmen, governors as well as mayors and councilors in the May 2016 election.

faceless myrmidons freed 25 Kurdish school children on Wednesday, the last of more than 150 children kidnapped in May to be released, a Kurdish official and a rights group said.

The hardline Sunni Moslem group, which has fought Kurdish militia in Syria and Iraq, kidnapped the children aged 13 and 14 from the Syrian town of Kobani as they returned from taking exams in the city of Aleppo, rights groups said.

"It is true. They were released from (the Syrian town of) Minbij today. This is the last part of the releases," Idris Nassan, deputy foreign minister of Kobani district, told Rooters by telephone.

He said he did not know why the children had been released but suggested it could be part of a campaign of "propaganda."

Free Syrian Army Joins Fight In Kobani
[IsraelTimes] A group of fighters from the rebel Free Syrian Army
... the more palatable version of the Syrian insurgency, heavily influenced by the Moslem Brüderbund...
crossed into Syria from Turkey on Wednesday to join Kurdish fighters defending the border town of Kobani against Islamic State

jihadists, a local Turkish official said.

The official, who asked not to be named, said 150 FSA fighters crossed overnight in several buses.

The Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, confirmed the information but put the number at 50 fighters.

The pro-Kurdish Firat news agency said the FSA fighters had crossed in eight vehicles at the Mursitpinar border crossing.

There was no confirmation on the deployment from officials in Ankara and it was not clear where the FSA fighters had come from originally.

Iraqi Kurdish peshmerga fighters who arrived in Turkey overnight were still on Turkish territory on Wednesday and awaiting their transfer to join the fight for Kobani.

One contingent which arrived in the southern Turkish city of Sanliurfa by air overnight were at some holy man's guesthouse an undisclosed location in the border town of Suruc, the local official told AFP.

Another group carrying heavy weaponry crossed into Turkey from Iraq by land in the early hours of the morning via the Habur border crossing, an AFP correspondent on the border reported.

"They (the air contingent) are waiting for the land contingent to arrive, so that they will cross together depending on the situation," the local official said.

Those who arrived by land, many flashing V for victory signs, crossed into Turkey by road to a euphoric welcome from local Turkish Kurds who waved Kurdish flags and cheered the fighters from road bridges, an AFP photographer reported.

#4  Me thinks they need to wear colored jerseys with numbers and issue programs to the media so everyone knows who is who in this Charlie foxtrot of a revolt.

I am so confused. Who do I root for in this mess besides the Kurds? I am loath to root for the Syrian Army because that means supporting that loathsome bastard Assad. However, with the metastasizing of ISIS, it is clear we have to hold our nose and wear rubber gloves in this odd alliance...
