Murder Suspect Worried Murder Tattoo Will Look Bad At His Murder Trial
A murder suspect who has the word "murder" tattooed on his neck is hoping to have the tattoo removed as he fears it will prejudice him in front of a jury.

Jeffrey Chapman is accused of murdering Damon Gailart in 2011 in Kansas and is worried that the tattoo would have a negative impact at the trial.

Prosecutors said they were not opposed to Chapman removing or covering his tattoo, but Barton County police department said they would not transport the suspect to a tattoo parlour for the removal process.

Under Kansas law, tattoo artists are only allowed to practise in licensed facilities, which also rules out a professional coming to visit Chapman in jail where he is currently held in custody.

NYC Risk of Flooding Increased by GW and OTHER Human Factors
The chance of floodwaters overtopping Manhattan's seawalls and inundating parts of the city has skyrocketed at least 20-fold since the mid-1800s thanks to swelling seas and mounting storm surges finds a new study.
Link to the study at the ... link.
They could build a big honking dike across the lower Bay with gates, flood bridges and controls that would stop this. A $10 $20 $50 billion dollar project would stimulate thousands of pay to play opportunities jobs and actually do something worthwhile. But no, it's more important to whine...
"The researchers found that today, waters can be expected to overtop the lower Manhattan seawall -- 1.75 meters (5.74 feet) high -- once every four to five years," explains the study summary from the American Geophysical Union (AGU). "In the 19th century, when both sea levels and storm tides were lower, water was expected to overtop the Manhattan seawall only once every 100 to 400 years, according to the paper."

The reasons for the local sea level rise are well-understood: global warming has caused sea water to expand while melting glaciers and icesheets have deposited more water into the oceans. At the same time, the land surface has been sinking.
At least they didn't say "man-made global warming"; I guess that's understood by WaPo readers. This next part, I found interesting, since the reasons cited may also have global warming connections, too.
Explanations for the increase in the storm tide are more complex. Per the AGU study summary:

About half of long-term change could be attributed to decades-long variations in the North Atlantic Oscillation, an irregular fluctuation of atmospheric pressure over the North Atlantic Ocean that has a strong effect on winter weather in Europe, Greenland, northeastern North America, North Africa, and northern Asia.
A natural fluctuation? Do tell!
Longer-term trends could also be influencing the increase in storm tides over the past two centuries, according to the paper. The authors speculate that climate change and increasing global temperatures could be contributing to the increase in storm tides. There could also be local factors, like deepening of shipping channels around New York harbor, that could have affected storm tides in the area over the past 170 years, Talke said.
Local factors, like maybe - the development of all the New Jersey 'meadowlands' (wetlands/swamps)and half of lower Manhattan?

South Sudan army chief dismissed after army losses
[Iran Press TV] South Sudan's President Salva Kiir has sacked his army chief following the fall of a major oil hub to the hands of rebels led by the former vice president, Riek Machar.

The South Sudanese state TV on Wednesday announced the dismissal of General James Hoth Mai, and named his successor as General Paul Malong.

The president gave no reason for removing Hoth Mai, but sources attributed the sacking to the army's recent losses in the country's oil-rich north.

Last week, rebel forces seized Bentiu, the capital of the oil-producing Unity state, and engaged in two days of ethnic killing.

According to the United Nations
...where theory meets practice and practice loses...
, hundreds of civilians were massacred as the rebels hunted down civilians seeking refuge in mosques, churches and a hospital.

The UN said that the rebels used hate radio broadcasts to stir violent ethnic sentiments.

UN criticizes South Sudan government for issuing 'erroneous' information
[FOXNEWS] The U.N. mission in South Sudan says the government is providing "erroneous" information relating to a recent massacre.

The U.N. mission on Wednesday said South Sudan's Minister of Information incorrectly told a news conference that residents seeking protection were turned away from a U.N. base and were directed to houses of worship where mass killings later took place.

The U.N. mission denied it turned away any civilians at its camp in Bentiu, the city where the U.N. says hundreds of people were killed on April 15 and 16.

Human Rights Watch
... dedicated to bitching about human rights violations around the world...
called on the U.N. Security Council to investigate the killings in Bentiu and other deaths earlier in the month in Bor. The group said the violence shows that ethnically motivated brutality against civilians is spiraling out of control.

Bangladesh court orders Khaleda's trial go ahead
[DAWN] A Bangladesh court ruled Wednesday opposition leader the loathesome Khaleda Zia
Three-term PM of Bangla, widow of deceased dictator Ziaur Rahman, head of the Bangla Nationalist Party, an apparent magnet for corruption ...
should stand trial for embezzlement in a case that could see her incarcerated
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
for life, a prosecutor said.

The High Court rejected the former two-time premier's appeals to halt the trial, which had been expected to start on Monday after she was indicted on charges of embezzling more than $650,000.

"Both her appeals have been rejected. There is no bar to continue her trial in the two cases," deputy attorney general Mohammad Selim told AFP.

A panel of two judges said the charges framed against Zia should stand and the trial could now go ahead in a special anti-corruption court in Dhaka, Selim said.

Zia's lawyers have called the charges politically motivated, aimed at destroying her Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which has vowed to topple the government of arch rival Prime Minister the loathesome Sheikh Hasina
...Bangla dynastic politician and current Prime Minister of Bangladesh. She has been the President of the Bangla Awami League since the Lower Paleolithic. She is the eldest of five children of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangla. Her party defeated the BNP-led Four-Party Alliance in the 2008 parliamentary elections. She has once before held the office, from 1996 to 2001, when she was defeated in a landslide. She and the head of the BNP, Khaleda Zia show such blind animosity toward each other that they are known as the Battling Begums..

"Russian Facebook" founder flees country, network is now effectively under state control.
"Russian Facebook" founder flees country after being forced out as CEO flees country, Russian social network is now effectively under state control.

Pavel Durov, the founder of Vkontakte (VK)--the largest social network in Russia--said on Tuesday that he fled the country one day after being forced out of the company, claiming that he felt threatened by Kremlin officials.

Durov explained that after seven years of relative social media freedom in Russia, his refusal to share user data with Russian law enforcement has set him at odds with the Kremlin, which has recently been trying to tighten its grip on the Internet, according to The Moscow Times.

VK's former CEO says that despite his multiple refusals of Kremlin requests to censor his site in a similar fashion to how it filters print and TV news, the site--which boasts 143 million registered users globally, 88 million of whom are based in Russia--is now effectively under state control.

From article comments:
The past "springs", riots, and resignations based on big data and social activism has these guys scared. And the last thing they want to do is have to crack down on anyone too hard. So they'll go back to State controlled propaganda with fewer alternatives or alternatives with heavy restrictions. Political prisoners that use social media will be tracked easier and will have their posts used against them for anti-Russian reasons. While many of its citizens are in a pro-Russia, pro-Soviet Nostalgia moment, they're slowly having their rights removed or controlled.

Fools.

Uh Oh: Russian Su -24 scores off against the American "USS Donald Cook"
Yes, I know, consider the source, but submitted for your approval:
[RussianRadio] In response, Russia sent an unarmed bomber Su- 24 to fly around the U.S. destroyer. However, experts say that this plane was equipped with the latest Russian electronic warfare complex. According to this version, "Aegis" spotted from afar the approaching aircraft, and sounded alarm. Everything went normally, American radars calculated the speed of the approaching target. And suddenly all the screens went blank. "Aegis" was not working any more, and the rockets could not get target information.
(Emphasis added - UP)
Meanwhile, Su-24 flew over the deck of the destroyer, did battle turn and simulated missile attack on the target. Then it turned and repeated the maneuver. And did so 12 times.

"After the incident, the foreign media reported that "Donald Cook" was rushed into a port in Romania. There all the 27 members of the crew filed a letter of resignation. This is indirectly confirmed by the Pentagon statement according to which the action demoralized the crew of the American ship."

Ukraine crisis: US troops land in Poland for exercises
[BBC] The first contingent of US troops has landed in Poland for military exercises amid tensions with Russia over Ukraine.

Some 150 soldiers, who landed in north-west Poland, are due to be followed in coming days by a further 450 troops.

Separately, the UK, Netherlands and Denmark scrambled fighter jets after two Russian military aircraft were spotted approaching their airspace.

Earlier, Russia's foreign minister said Moscow would respond to any attack on its interests in Ukraine.

Speaking on Russian state TV channel RT on Wednesday, Sergei Lavrov drew a parallel with the 2008 Georgian war, saying: "If our interests, our legitimate interests, the interests of Russians have been attacked directly.... I do not see any other way but to respond in full accordance with international law".

He also accused the US of "running the show" in Ukraine, and that it was "quite telling" that Kiev had re-launched its "anti-terrorist" operation in the east on Tuesday during a visit by US Vice-President Joe Foreign Policy Whiz Kid Biden

A Map of Every Nuke-Scale Asteroid Strike From the Last Decade

[Wired] Though dinosaur-killing impacts are rare, large asteroids routinely hit the Earth. In the visualization above, you can see the location of 26 space rocks that slammed into our planet between 2000 and 2013, each releasing energy equivalent to that of some of our most powerful nuclear weapons.

The video comes from the B612 Foundation, an organization that wants to build and launch a telescope that would spot civilization-ending asteroids to give humans a heads up in trying to deflect them. To figure out where asteroids were hitting our planet, B612 used data from a worldwide network of instruments that detect infrasound, low-frequency sound waves traveling through the atmosphere. Such measurements have been used since the 1950s to detect nuclear bomb explosions and can also pick up the tremendous burst of a bolide tearing through our atmosphere.

The Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization, which operates the network, recently released the location of these asteroid strikes, which gives scientists another datapoint in understanding the frequency with which these events happen. In recent years, there has been a growing consensus that the Earth gets hit by enormous space rocks more often than we previously thought. The 26 strikes in the video above were each between 1 and 600 kilotons. For comparison, the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima exploded with an energy of 16 kilotons, and the U.S.'s most powerful nuclear weapon, the B83 bomb, has a yield of up to 1.2 megatons. Of course, comparing asteroids to nuclear bombs is a bit misleading; asteroids generate a moving shockwave that can cause far more destruction than the rock itself.

Just to dial back your ever-increasing sense of anxiety here--asteroid impacts are almost always harmless. A Hiroshima-scale asteroid explosion happens in our atmosphere on average once a year and yet we're all still here. Moreover, asteroids can't aim themselves at populated centers. Most of the Earth's surface is water and even a large percentage of land is fairly uninhabited by humans. Though B612′s Ed Lu mentions in the video that only "blind luck" is preventing a catastrophic city-size space rock from killing us, keep in mind that blind luck has actually been serving us fairly well so far.

Still, the well-publicized explosion over the city of Chelyabinsk in Russia last year serves as a reminder that these events can be quite destructive. It would do us good to be on the lookout for them.

Scalia faults Soto for suggesting Michigan voters are racist.
[Washington Examiner] Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia faulted Justice Sonia Sotomayor for making what he regards as a "shameful" suggestion that the Michigan voters who decided to ban affirmative action in college admissions were motivated by racism.

Scalia wrote a concurring opinion upholding a 2006 ballot initiative that amended Michigan's constitution to ban affirmative action.

"As Justice Harlan observed over a century ago, '[o]ur Constitution is color-blind, and neither knows nor tolerates classes among citizens,'" Scalia concluded, quoting the dissent in Plessy v. Ferguson. "The people of Michigan wish the same for their governing charter. It would be shameful for us to stand in their way."

And then, the Parthian shot: "And doubly shameful to equate 'the majority' behind [the constitutional amendment] with 'the majority' responsible for Jim Crow," he added in a final footnote, citing the first two pages of Sotomayor's dissent.
Few surprises here, and something Judge Scalia has had ample time to observe. A shameful, unqualified appointment followed by shameful job performance.
