Anti-violence activists charged in vicious attack
[THENEWSTRIBUNE] WASHINGTON, PA. -- Two "Stop the Violence" organizers allegedly beat one of their colleagues so severely that he vomited blood and was left unconscious at death's door.

Nikole Ardeno and Emanuel Velez, both 30, accused their former roommate of stealing their property, and allegedly punched and kicked him in the street until he had seizures. Arrested moments later, Ardeno was still wearing the same "Stop the Violence" T-shirt she had on the night before when she coordinated a march protesting two recent shootings, Washington Police Chief Chris Luppino said.

The victim, Joshua Magraff, also is a community organizer with the anti-violence group, and shared an apartment with the suspects until recently.

Online court records don't list lawyers for the defendants, who face a preliminary hearing Nov. 10 on charges of aggravated assault, conspiracy, simple assault and disorderly conduct.

Local "Stop the Violence" leader Suzanne Kelley said she hopes to hear from Ardeno, and insisted that "we don't promote violence at all."

"I can't believe this is going on. I don't want the community to get a negative effect from this because they back us," Kelley said.

Judge Reverses Typhoid Mary's 3 Foot 'Quarantine'
Unbelievable - via Hot Air.
Maine officials cannot force a quarantine on a nurse who treated West African Ebola patients, a Maine judge ruled Friday.

District Court Judge Charles C. LaVerdiere rejected a court order drawn up by Maine health officials that would have required nurse Kaci Hickox to avoid public places and keep a three-foot buffer with other people until Nov. 10, when a 21-day incubation period for the virus will end.

LaVerdiere said Hickox should continue self-monitoring for Ebola symptoms.

Hickox treated Ebola patients in Sierra Leone and returned to Newark Liberty International Airport with a slight fever. She was quarantined in a tent and then allowed to return to her home in Maine.

Hickox has defied quarantine orders by Maine officials, saying she is showing no symptoms of the disease and is following self-monitoring guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

#3  Hickox treated Ebola patients in Sierra Leone

Do we know what she was actually doing over there? The only official statements I've seen were incredibly vague. If she was just a pencil-pusher, this is no big deal. If she had contact with infected patients, this is nuts.

Typhoid Mary Ordered To Stay 3 Ft Away From Others
Kaci Hickox, the Maine nurse who treated Ebola patients and is locked in a standoff with the governor over quarantine rules, has been temporarily ordered by a court to stay at least three feet away from other people and avoid public places.

Hickox, who has tested negative for Ebola and has no symptoms, has maintained that authorities in Maine violated her rights by demanding that she stay at home for 21 days. She took a defiant bike ride on Thursday morning, and Gov. Paul LePage said that she was testing his patience.

Better than nothing, I suppose.

#1  Funny how she gets to decide whether she's at risk of developing ebola or not, and yet our service personnel who were pointlessly sent to west Africa cannot.

These folks should just stay home until they've passed the 21 days. They should be compensated for any lost wages, and should get an aide to run errands and check for ebola symptoms every few hours.

MERS strikes: 4 dead, 9 new cases surface
After a break for the haj, MERS resumes its slow march.
[ARABNEWS] The MERS coronavirus has killed four persons and infected nine others, announced the Saudi Health Ministry on Thursday.

One of the latest victims of the deadly disease is an 84-year-old expatriate who lived in Taif.

The nine latest MERS infected patients, meanwhile, are all Saudi with the exception of a 30-year-old expat woman in Riyadh.

Three new cases were diagnosed in Riyadh, three in Taif and one in Hafr Al-Batin.

The deadly virus has killed 337 across the Kingdom since June 2012.

A total of 435 patients have made a full recovery, while 17 are currently undergoing treatment in hospitals across the Kingdom, according to ministry reports.

New cases have recently been diagnosed in several cities, including Taif, Madinah, Riyadh, Jeddah, Al-Jouf, Najran, Hofuf, Hafr Al-Batin and Jubail.

Typhoid Mary defies orders to stay at home and goes for a cycle
[DAILYMAIL.CO.UK]
  • Nurse Kaci Hickox, 33, and her boyfriend Ted Wilbur left their home on Thursday morning with their bikes for an hour-long ride
  • She said: 'There is nothing to stop me from going for a bike ride in my home town'
  • She spoke to the press outside the home in Fort Kent, Maine, on Wednesday night, saying she will continue to fight the Ebola quarantine
  • Hickox shook the hand of MailOnline's reporter at the scene and said: 'You could hug me. You could shake my hand. I would not give you Ebola'
  • Maine Governor said he would give up on the state's demand to keep the nurse under quarantine if she agrees to take a blood test
  • However a blood test for Ebola would only be positive if Hickox was displaying symptoms of the virus

#9  If her attitude is shared by a significant percentage of medical workers in the West then essentially all efforts at epidemiological disease control are moot.

If Ebola doesn't do significant harm to Western nations then Ebola in it's present form is just fundamentally incompatible with the epidemiological eco-system of a Western industrial society located in the temperate zone.

If we ever encounter something that's more compatible with our way of life, we're doomed.

#12  I mentioned this in a comment days ago, not sure if anyone read it, so I will quote it again:

Dr. Beutler, an American medical doctor and researcher, won the Nobel Prize for Medicine and Physiology in 2011 for his work researching the cellular subsystem of the body’s overall immune system — the part of it that defends the body from infection by other organisms, like Ebola.

He is currently the Director of the Center for the Genetics of Host Defense at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas — the first U.S. city to treat an Ebola patient and also the first to watch one die from the virus. In an exclusive interview with NJ Advance Media, Beutler reviewed Christie’s new policy of mandatory quarantine for all health care workers exposed to Ebola, and declared: “I favor it.”

“Even if someone is asymptomatic you cannot rely on people to report themselves if they get a fever,” said Dr. Beutler, adding, “You can’t just depend on the goodwill of people to confine the disease like that – even healthcare workers. They behave very irresponsibly."

Interesting precedent - no pension plan is safe from bankruptcy

#1  It would seem a no-brainer that, once the party guaranteeing the pension goes bankrupt, there AIN'T NO MO PENSION.
Posted by: Anguper Hupomosing9418 || 10/31/2014 0:33 Comments || Top||

#2  The employer once could use the pension as a negotiated deferred payment income strategy to offset a portion of the employee's wages. An allowable, DoL sanctioned Ponzi scheme.
Now its just wages, if you can find them.

#6  All pensions are just promises unless & until actually paid out to the beneficiaries. Lots of governmental pension plans have made promises they can't keep. As we are finding out. Governmental bonds are also simple promises of future payments.
A court which attempts to force a bankrupt governmental entity to pay out a pension, will have to levy taxes directly, I see no other options.

#7  The City in most cases hasn't made its required pension contributions in years. Oakland is in similar shape, squandering money on every loser deal it can dream up and missing 20 years worth of Policeman's and Fireman's pension payments. "A transitional body will be put in place in consultation with all parties. A return to the constitutional order is expected in no more than 12 months," General Honore Traore said during a news conference in the capital, Ouagadougou, on Thursday.

The military also announced a curfew from 7:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. local time (1900 GMT-0600 GMT).

Earlier in the day, Burkinabé President Blaise Compaore declared a state of emergency in the wake of violent protests at his bid to extend his 27-year rule. The protesters demanded his resignation.

Throughout Thursday, demonstrators rampaged through the dusty streets of Ouagadougou, the capital, overrunning state broadcasters, setting fire to the Parliament building and torching the homes of the president's aides and relatives.

Russia, Ukraina sign gas deal
From English language source:

The sticking point up until today has been Russian insistence that Ukraina prepay for part of this winter's gas supplies, and repay about 60 percent of the accumulated debt for past purchases.

Russia, Ukraine, and the European Commission have signed an agreement on gas supply and transit conditions until March 2015 during talks in Brussels.

The agreement was signed by Russian Energy Minister Aleksandr Novak, Ukrainian Energy Minister Yury Prodan, and vice president of the EC in charge of energy, Guenther Oettinger. The signing was witnessed by European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and the EC’s new vice president in charge of energy, Marosh Shefchovich.

Ukraine will be able to receive the needed volumes of Russian gas until the end of March based on a pre-payment plan at a price of $385 per 1,000 cubic meters, Oettinger said during the press conference.

Speaking at a briefing after the signing of the deal, Oettinger assured that Ukraine said it is ready to pay $1.451 billion of its gas debt to Russia “immediately.”

According to Oettinger, Kiev will be able to pay back $3.1 billion of its gas debts before the end of the year. However, he added that the final figure will depend on the decision of the international Stockholm court of arbitration on the gas debt dispute.

Ukraine will get the money it is lacking with the help of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the European Union, the EC official announced. Oettinger expects that the promised financial assistance from the IMF and the EU will be used by Kiev to pay for Russian gas.

Lenovo closes deal to buy Motorola from Google
[ARABNEWS] Lenovo has announced it has completed its acquisition of Motorola Mobility from Google, a move strengthening the Chinese giant's position in the smartphone market.

The $2.9 billion deal, announced in January, ends Google's brief ownership of the onetime mobile phone star.

By adding Motorola, Lenovo positions itself among the top global smartphone makers behind Samsung and Apple.

Lenovo will operate Motorola as a wholly-owned subsidiary, keeping the reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown
... home of Al Capone, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel,...
-based headquarters and adding some 3,500 employees, including 2,800 in the US.

"Today, we achieved a historic milestone for Lenovo and for Motorola -- and together we are ready to compete, grow and win in the global smartphone market," Lenovo chairman and chief executive Yang Yuanqing said in a statement.

He hailed the partnership as a "perfect fit," adding that "Motorola brings a strong presence in the US and other mature markets, great carrier relationships, an iconic brand, a strong IP portfolio and an incredibly talented team."

In the same statement, Google CEO Larry Page said that "Motorola is in great hands with Lenovo, a company that's all-in on making great devices."

#1  ... home of Al Capone, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel,...

I really need to get my eye prescription updated and get a pair of glasses. I read that as "a succession of Daleks..."

#3  ends Google's brief ownership
Didn't we see earlier that Google kept a number of remarkable Motorola patents which M. couldn't afford to develop or tech wouldn't yet support?

#4  Weird. Something convinced me to ditch my Motorola phone yesterday.

Pity I can't get rid of the Lenovo laptop. It's employer issued.

#6  One of my patents stayed with Google. It kills denial of service attacks.

Another is still with the core Motorola bit in Schaumburg.

Not many I know still with the unit going to the Chicoms.

Italy mayor wants separate buses for Roma (ethnically Indian) people
[Canberra Times] Rome: An attempt by an Italian mayor to create a separate bus route for Roma people has sparked outrage among politicians, who compared the move to apartheid in South Africa and segregation in the United States.

Claudio Gambino, the centre-left Democratic Party (PD) mayor of Borgaro Torinese, said this week he wants separate buses because Roma people who live in a camp of around 600 inhabitants on the outskirts of the northern Italian town "have been afflicting us for over 20 years".

"To guarantee the security of our citizens we need two buses. One for citizens, the other for Roma people," he was quoted as saying by Italian media on Friday, adding that buses were plagued by theft and petty violence.

Town councillor Luigi Spinelli of the Left, Ecology and Freedom party (SEL) has supported the motion - to the disgust of his party's leader Nichi Vendola, who told La Stampa daily on Saturday that "giving people different rights is called apartheid".
Cheap labor can be rather expensive.
