National Felon League: Tom Brady's staunchest defenders stunned by cell phone allegation
[Yahoo Sports] The NFL didn't budge on Tuesday. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, five weeks after hearing Brady's appeal over the deflate-gate issue, kept his suspension at four games. That's the same suspension for Dallas Cowboys defensive end Greg Hardy in his domestic violence case. The NFLPA, via reports, has been planning to take the NFL to federal court if Brady's suspension wasn't completely overturned.

He didn't destroy it, he spiked it. On concrete. And then did his end-zone dance on it...

Egypt, UAE partnership will continue to flourish: Sultan Al-Jaber
The UAE and other Gulf oil countries will continue to gift Egypt with funds. In exchange, Egypt will not melt down, flooding the region with work-seeking refugees.
...and also not flooding the various jihadi groups with sophisticated weapons...
[AlAhram] The United Arab Emirates' support for Egypt will continue to ensure stability in Egypt and consequently the stability of the region, UAE minister of state Sultan Al-Jaber told Emirates News Agency (WAM).

"The UAE's support for Egypt is firmly rooted in the conviction that Egypt's stability and prosperity is stability and prosperity for the region," the minister said in an interview published on Monday.

The oil-rich nation has, along with Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
and Kuwait, provided billions of dollars in aid and financial assistance to Egypt since the July 2013 ouster of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi.

"We are confident this partnership will continue to flourish. What is important at this stage is to intensify the work focused on the revitalisation of the Egyptian economy and development of the legislative system. This will increase growth rates, and allow for new projects to open doors for economic and social prosperity as well as new investments," he added.

There are over 600 UAE companies operating in Egypt, according to Al-Jaber.

The local arm of UAE-based telecoms firm Etisalat is Egypt's third largest mobile operator.

"The goal now is to increase the attractiveness of the Egyptian market. Furthermore, given the rapid population growth, there is an urgent need to create jobs through expansion and new market growth," said the minister.

"Dr. Al Jaber went on to say that the investment climate in Egypt for UAE investors can become more attractive with the help of legislative amendments to simplify procedures and create an integrated experience," said WAM.

The UAE's National Marine Dredging Company (NMDC) was part of a consortium which dredged for the expansion of Egypt's Suez Canal, a project set to be unveiled in a lavish ceremony on 6 August, just one year after groundwork began.

"The NMDC founded and led the 'Challenge Consortium' including the Dutch and Belgium firms Boskalis, Van Oord, and Jan De Nul that, in turn, was able to deliver the necessary dredging in record time.

"This achievement validates the ability of the Egyptian people to stand in the face of adversity with great resolve, determination and success," he said of the new canal.

#4  This threat of war in South America is but one of the consequences of the US' ostentatious and provocative weakness.

Does Venezuela actually have the capability to swiftly seize, hold and permanently control Guyana's coast?

If yes, then why would a rational Venezuela refrain from doing so?

One factor that might deter Maduro is the proximity of a significant nuclear power.

#6  More background:

Granger recalled the border dispute for the Essequibo region –a jungle area that represents two thirds of its territory of 215,000 km2- with Venezuela, a country that he did not refer by name. For Guyana, the boundaries were set in an arbitral award of 1899 –when it was a British colony- and the good offices of the United Nations set forth in the Geneva Agreement have not rendered fruit. Therefore, the dispute should be settled at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. Venezuela, however, maintains that the Geneva Agreement signed by Caracas and Georgetown in 1966 "is the basis for a fair, legal claim" of Essequibo.

What complicated things is that the residents of that region speak English rather than Spanish and consider themselves Guyanan.

In addition to this dispute, there's also an energy-supply problem:

Guyana is considering energy alternatives to the Petrocaribe program as Venezuela fails to meet export quotas and tensions flare between the neighboring countries. The small South American nation receives about half its fuel supply from the Petrocaribe program [in a rice for oil deal.]

A signature program of the late Hugo Chavez, Petrocaribe has sold about $28 billion to nations across the Caribbean and Central America since its creation in 2005. Member countries finance as much as half the price of the shipments at 1 percent to 2 percent interest over 25 years.

Jordan says Guyana had no plans of exiting Petrocaribe due to its generous terms, while remaining cautious as no agreement had been signed for 2015.

2 Ukrainian coppers die in shootout with smugglers
A broken down truck near the northern Donetsk town of Novoselovka ended with a shootout that claimed the lives of two Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) agents Tuesday, according to Russian language news accounts.

A news report which appeared in tsnesor.net said that a two truck convoy traveling from Konstantinovka and bound for rebel-held Stakhanov was stopped when one of the vehicles broke down near a checkpoint.

An inquiry by several Ukraininan police manning the checkpoint led to the drivers and passengers in the vehicles opening fire, killing two unidentified SBU agents. The Ukrainians were forced to withdraw.

The suspects then opened fired on their own vehicles destroying both vehicles and the contraband aboard. The vehicles, according to one of the drivers were carrying candy, liquor and soft drinks without the required tax stamps.

The report also said that the suspects had suffered losses in the shootout, but did not elaborate.

Smuggling and organized crime in rebel held areas is pervasive even though officials in both Lugansk and Donetsk have yet to acknowledge the problem, likely because it exists on both sides of the line of contact.

The shootout in Mukachevo two weeks ago which claimed the lives of four men was over smuggling routes in Transcarpathia to rebel held areas, as well as to other nations.

Gennady Moskal, newly appointed governor of Transcarpathia region claimed on Monday that smuggling was almost completely stopped two weeks after the Mukachevo shootout. The news outlet which reported Moskal's remarks said that he had met with border guard officials with Hungary and Romania concerning smuggling, apparently two nations across whose border smuggling into Ukraine takes place.

Intensive artillery fire continued overnight Monday in Gorlovka in Donetsk as ten residential buildings were hit and two civilians were said to have been killed, according to Russian language news accounts.

According to a news report which appeared in korrespondent.net, sourced from a local Gorlovka website and social media, on the night of July 27th to July 28th Ukrainian artillery hit several sectors of the town including Nikitovsky district and downtown. Streets where artillery struck include Muzikaya Shkola, Krasnoznamyanskaya, Zagorodnyaya and Sovietski Armii.

According to a VKontakte webpage, of the two residents killed in the overnight artillery, one was found underneath rubble on ulitsa General Kondratenko, reportedly an unidentified woman her 70s. Another unidentified woman found dead earlier was in her 80s.

Gas and electrical systems in the city were said to have been hit as well, but both have been restored, according to data supplied by the Donetsk ministry of defense website. A separate Donetsk ministry of defense web page said that the artillery originated from the town of Dzerzhinsk, to the west of Gorlovka.

Ukrainian media including government media said that the artillery in Gorlovka was part of an artillery duel between rebel and Ukrainian artillery shooters. Ukrainian media also said that rebel artillery fired on targets in nearby Kurdyumovka, Svetlodarsk and Maiorsk. Rebel artillery firing was said to have originated in Uglegorsk, which is near Debaltsevo, and was said to be 152mm artillery.

A total of 46 instances of ceasefire violations by Ukrainian forces were said to have been recorded by Donetsk officials since Monday. Locales struck include western suburbs of Donetsk city, including Oktyabrsky and Kuibyshevskiy districts. Zaitsevo was also hit as well as southern Donetsk towns of Sahanka and Dokuchaevsk.

Among the weapons the Ukrainians used were 122mm and 152mm artillery, 125mm tank guns and 120mm and 82mm mortars.

Ukrainian media said that fighting near Krasnogorovka and Marinka has intensified in the last 24 hours, including the use of 120mm mortar fire. Additionally, rebel forces are said to have added new forces in Aleksandrovka Staromihaylovke in western Donetsk city.

According to a news post in tsnesor.net, rebel 120mm mortars hit Travneva, which is near Peski, and 122mm artillery hit Ukrainian positions in Avdievka and Opytnoye.

Ukrainian media said that rebel forces have violated the ceasefire a total of 47 times in the past 24 hours.

EU to register Cyprus cheese under Greek and Turkish names
[AA.TR] The dispute between Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots over a special kind of cheese took a step further towards resolution on Tuesday as the EU announced it would recognize the special product under both Greek and Turkish names.

The step is being as seen as a positive move towards the reunification of the divided island of Cyprus.

The European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
said Tuesday that the cheese product would be registered as "Χαλλουμι [Halloumi]" in Greek and "Hellim" in Turkish as "protected designations of origin" (PDO), a system under which only products originating in a particular region are allowed to be identified by the name linked to that region.

"This step demonstrates the commitment of both communities of Cyprus to work together on projects to unify the whole island," European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said in a statement Tuesday.

"Halloumi/Hellim cheese symbolizes the shared heritage of the island of Cyprus. It is a tradition which has linked the communities living here for centuries," the statement added.

The cheese in question is made from a mix of goat and sheep milk that originates from Cyprus, in which it is the most prominent product and a significant value for its economy.

On July 18, Juncker had announced that the Turkish and Greek sides were in agreement over the "protected designation of origin" issue.

Last year, the Greek Cypriot administration applied to the EU for a PDO, causing concern among the Turkish Cypriot producers of its "Hellim" who feared the move would affect their exports.

Reunification talks between the Greek and Turkish communities in the island resumed in May when newly-elected Turkish Cypriot President Mustafa Akinci met Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiades in Nicosia's neutral buffer zone after previous negotiations stalled in October in a row over gas exploration.

Among the concessions made since then has been the removal of visa requirements. Now an agreement on cheese can be added to the list.

The island has been divided into Turkish Cypriot government in the northern third and Greek Cypriot administration in the southern two-thirds after a 1974 military coup by Greece was followed by the peace operation of The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
as a guarantor power in Cyprus.

The Military Will Test a New Terrifyingly Loud Noise Gun
Imagine walking through a field on a cloudless day when you suddenly hear the 130-decibel roar of a fighter jet. But you can't spot the jet, or even tell which direction the sound is coming from. Rather, it seems to originate from the thin air in front of your face, like a shout from an angry, Old-Testament God. No, you aren't hallucinating. And you aren't Moses. You're experiencing a new type of military weapon intended not to kill but to startle an enemy into retreat. It's called the Laser-Induced Plasma Effect, or LIPE, a weapon that the U.S. military hopes to begin testing in coming months.

This new nuclear-armed US bomb may be the most dangerous weapon in America's arsenal
According to the Federation of American Scientists, the B61-12 will be able to strike within 30 meters of its target. This accuracy allows the bomb to destroy targets that would have previously necessitated the use of a larger but more indiscriminate weapon.

As a result of the bomb's relatively low yield, the weapon would produce less nuclear fallout than earlier nuclear weapons, something which would limit unintended casualties from a nuclear attack.

But this lower fallout also lowers the cost and scope of a nuclear strike -- which could in turn increase the possibility that the bomb would actually be used in a military engagement.

As it is, the B61-12 may actually expand the range of possible US nuclear targets. In a 2014 conference organized by the Stimson Center, retired US Air Force General Norton Schwartz said that the B61-12's target set goes beyond that of previous gravity-guided nuclear bombs in the US military. This effectively means that the US could now consider the use of aircraft-delivered lower-yield nuclear weapons in a wider range of scenarios.

MH370: wreckage found on Reunion 'matches Malaysia Airlines flight'
48 hour rule, minimum...
A French aviation expert believes he may have found the wreckage of MH370 -- the Malaysia Airlines flight which disappeared off the coast of Malaysia in March 2014. Xavier Tytelman, a former military pilot who now specialises in aviation security, was contacted on Wednesday morning by a man living on the island of Reunion, in the Indian Ocean. The man sent Mr Tytelman a series of photos showing wreckage of a plane, which the Frenchman said could possibly be the missing jet.

"I've been studying hundreds of photos and speaking to colleagues," Mr Tytelman told The Telegraph. "And we all think it is likely that the wing is that of a Boeing 777 -- the same plane as MH370.

"Police in Reunion examining the wreckage say that it looks like it's been in the water for around a year, which again would fit with MH370. We can't say for certainty, but we do think there is a chance that this is it."

The plane vanished with 239 people on board in circumstances which have baffled investigators, and left distraught families searching for answers. Wild theories emerged about the plane: that it had landed in Diego Garcia, or flown on to North Korea.

But Mr Tytelman believes that the Indian Ocean location makes sense for wreckage of the plane to have washed up.

"The French police are now looking at it, and the Australians -- who are in charge of the search -- are interested too," he said. "We don't know how long it will take to get confirmation or a definite denial. But it's an intriguing development."

Writing on his blog, Mr Tytelman said that the photos of the wreckage had aroused significant interest on the AvGeek website -- a closed forum for pilots. He said that there was much discussion over a code part of the wreckage: BB670.

"The code is not that of a plane number plate, nor that or a serial number on machinery," he wrote. "But if the flaperon does indeed belong to MH370, it's clear that the reference will be swiftly identified. In a few days we will have a definitive answer."

#2  Don't believe that it would have 'landed' in Diego Garcia, though.

Might have gotten 'close'.

#3  It is about 1470 miles from Diego Garcia to Saint Denis in Reunion. That's about 3 hours flying time for a B777.

#4  if the flaperon does indeed belong to MH370...

Flaperon? Is that an aviation term like propellerator or wheel-thingie?

#5  So if I get stuck in an airport soon, this is all I'll be seeing on CNN the next five days, right?

Snark of the day.

#6  I was just wondering, Dr. Steve. If an aircraft (of some size) turned off its transponder, approached DG from the northeast and wouldn't answer the radio calls, what the response by the folks there might be?

Would they talk about it, given the subsequent coverage and furor?

Currents in the Indian Ocean travel counter-clockwise, but don't have time to figure 'sub-surface object current travel times' this afternoon. Don't think this item would have been on the water's surface during its journey, but don't believe it hugged the bottom, either.

#10  Yes the serial numbers can be checked to see if it is part of the aircraft. What they know is that the piece does come from a Boeing 777 and the wear fits the timeline of the missing plane. If it isn't part of the missing plane then the bigger mystery is what plane lost it?
Posted by: DarthVader || 07/29/2015 17:44 Comments || Top||

#11  How easy is it to fake serial numbers on airplane parts?
Posted by: Anguper Hupomosing9418 || 07/29/2015 18:49 Comments || Top||

#12  Unlikely - numbers should be where they normally are stamped/etched and not ground down and restamped over/moved. You'd also have to fake longterm sea exposure, etc.
Posted by: Frank G || 07/29/2015 19:01 Comments || Top||

#13  "You'd also have to fake longterm sea exposure, etc." That wouldn't be particularly hard if this was a planned job.
Posted by: Anguper Hupomosing9418 || 07/29/2015 19:03 Comments || Top||

#14  I think it would be incredibly difficult. Every piece with a tracking ID would have to have the same ID match with the construction records. The metallurgy would have to match. The damage would have to match up with previous investigation records to point the investigation towards whatever wanted conclusion. Then the evidence would have to be transported all the way over there and deposited, as different oceans would have different dissolved mineral compositions temperatures wildlife etc. This would all have to be done quickly and quietly in order to start the oceanic exposure damage.

If there were to be a cover up for whatever reason, I'd think it would be much easier to currupt the investigation, but even a small group like that would have its issues, nevermind the slew of people necessary to correctly manufacture and covertly transport such a large and precise item.

#16  If it does match the downed plane, I would follow Occam's Razor for each story. It being planted is just too messy with too many variables, especially since the story has pretty much fallen off the western radar by now.
Posted by: DarthVader || 07/29/2015 21:04 Comments || Top||

#17  Is this a piece of MH370 - easy enough to determine.

How and why did it end up there - still a vexing question.

Working theory is the that pilot was going through a mid-life crisis (wife and girlfriend trouble that even the little blue pills couldn't fix). He was also politically active aligned with Anwar Ibrahim. Decided to off himself and take a bunch with him a la the German Wings kookburger.
