Vermont schools ban brownies: 'The kids like kale here'
[EAGNEWS.ORG] To Vermont public schools, the brownie is as old fashioned as the powdered wig.

Brownies and other chocolate treats are now officially banned by the state. Vermont Watchdog reports the state is now pushing fruit kebabs, kale and gluten-free paleo lemon bars as school treats.

The ban comes in an attempt to comply with new federal school lunch and snack regulations championed by First Lady Michelle Obama.

"These changes are really supporting the types of diets that we as a country should be following to have a healthy diet and lifestyle," Laurie Colgan, child nutrition program director at the Agency of Education, tells the news site.

"If you have a food fundraiser and the foods meet the guidelines, then you can have that fundraiser. ...Schools have fundraisers that are selling things like grapefruits and oranges from Florida. They're selling flower bulbs, cards and wrapping paper. There are a lot of non-food fundraisers schools are using."

Some schools claim they're ahead of the curve and don't offer brownies or desserts anyway, so the mandates handed down from Washington, D.C. and implemented by the state don't mean much to them.

"We haven't had desserts in our schools. This is my fourth year, and I've never seen a dessert served in the school. The kids like kale here, and they eat broccoli. Really, we've been ahead of the game," Shelley Mathias, principal of Burlington's Edmunds Elementary School, tells Watchdog.
Then her lips fell off.
But not all progressive northeastern states are following the dictates from D.C.

The Boston Globe notes Massachusetts has bucked the bake sale rules.

"In 2012, an uprising over lost bake sale revenue led the state to repeal the standards for fundraisers and re-institute the right to consume cupcakes," the paper reports. They learned their lesson when the state tried to force "healthy foods" on schools and they weren't going to let the Feds to it to them again.

But the Globe wonders, "Now the question is, which kids out there have actually claimed to like kale?"

If they go to a government school in Vermont, do they have much choice?

There's your problem. Quit trying to wear the brownie on your head. Eat it instead.
Better now?

#5  interestingly, Kale is making a comeback in the gourmet catering industry

It is used as part of the 'stuffing' inside gourmet pastries. It works better than spinach because it retains much of its fiber strength during cooking. As a bonus, kale does not require as much washing as spinach and it holds cheese just as well

Obama's ship is sinking
[NYPOST] The rising clamor over the beheading of two Americans, and rapidly sinking polls, forced President B.O. to reassure the nation last week he had a plan to deal with the Islamic State. He did some of what he had to do, but only some, and so most military analysts believe the expanded Arclight airstrikes will not be a sufficient match for the size and weaponry of the terrorist army.

They miss the point. The disjointed speech wasn't really about terrorism and launching a new war. It was about saving Obama's presidency.

He is sinking fast and could soon pass the point of no return. In fact, it may already be too late to save the SS Obama.

#3  Obama's not running for anything anymore, so what difference, at this point, does it make if his ship sinks?
So far his negatives do not seem to be attaching to the various Democratic Congresscritters who are running - as Romney said, 47% of the voters are guaranteed to the Dems, regardless. And Republicans (e.g. Cochran) are doing their best to make sure a good chunk of the remaining 53% at least stay home.

Rand Paul: It's 'a mistake to arm' militants in Syria
[Iran Press TV] US Senator Rand Paul, who is seen as a potential Republican presidential candidate in the 2016 election, says it is "a mistake to arm moderate" gunnies in Syria to defeat the ISIL terrorist group.

"It's a mistake to arm them. Most of the arms we've given to the so-called moderate rebels have wound up in the hands of ISIS, because ISIS simply takes it from them, or it's given to them, or we mistakenly actually give it to some of the radicals," Paul said on Monday, using an alternative acronym for the group.

The Pentagon plans to train and arm 5,000 gunnies in Syria as part of the B.O. regime's long-term strategy to confront ISIL.

#1  Paul pointed to reports of a non-aggression pact between the so-called moderate Syrian turbans and ISIL murderous Moslems over the weekend.

Paul is correct [insert Rantburg broken watch axiom here]. If one had any doubts about the arming of so-called 'moderates' the recent non-aggression pacts should have convinced even the least skeptical of the futility of such an effort.

#3  I recommend giving them ammo - or at least the fast-moving parts - but not the arms.
Posted by: Glenmore || 09/16/2014 7:57 Comments || Top||

#4  Or, you know, you just finish arming and training a faction, and then someone suicide-bombs their entire command structure, leaving the rank-and-file to follow their bliss, mostly into the arms of ISIS along with all their weapons and training.

#5  I would only arm the Kurds and Israeli's. Everyone else has a lot to prove before I trust them.

Being a victim today is insufficient as I've noticed today's victim often becomes tomorrow's oppressor.

#6  The Pentagon plans to train and arm 5,000 gunnies in Syria as part of the B.O. regime's long-term strategy to confront ISIL.

Similar comment as others: "Can we trust them?" The record is not good.

#7  Can we trust them? Same comment applies to the present administration with one difference; the answer is NO and the record is also not good.
