New security operation in Iraq
BAGHDAD, June 16 (UPI) -- The U.S. army said Thursday it launched a major security operation in central and southern Iraq to stem mounting violence. A statement by the army said an estimated 1,000 U.S. troops carried an all-out security operation dubbed "White Shield" involving raids and searches of houses and suspected insurgent hideouts in Hulla.It said at least seven gunmen were arrested and arms, including ammunition, weapons and 10 kilograms (more than 20 pounds) of explosives, were seized. In a separate statement the U.S. military command said five Marines were killed in an explosion that cut through their convoy in the region of Haklaniya, near the city of Ramadi in western Iraq Wednesday. In the meantime, witnesses said a car bomb exploded near an Iraqi army patrol in the region of Salikh north of Baghdad, wounding six soldiers. More than 40 Iraqis have been killed and dozens wounded in separate bombing attacks in Iraq Wednesday.
