An Old Favorite
You talk oâ better food for us, anâ schools, anâ fires, anâ all:
Weâll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Donât mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widowâs Uniform is not the soldier-manâs disgrace.
For itâs Tommy this, anâ Tommy that, anâ âChuck him out, the brute!â
But itâs âSaviour of âis countryâ when the guns begin to shoot;
Anâ itâs Tommy this, anâ Tommy that, anâ anything you please;
Anâ Tommy ainât a bloominâ foolâyou bet that Tommy sees!
Last stanza of a Rudyard Kipling poem; Tommy being, of course, the stereotypical British soldier.
