Prodi refuses "specified laws" to counter terrorism
Opposition leader Romano Prodi announced on Monday his refusal to Silvio Berlusconi's administration who is in the process of enacting laws to counter terrorism in the aftermath of London last Thursday's bombings. Prodi, who is also the President of the European Commission, stressed that enacting these new laws would alter the Italian lifestyle and threaten democracy.

He noted that his party as well as European governments should actively counter terrorism. He showed support for the British premier's decision to remain democratic in all aspects. Meanwhile, Prodi renewed his party's opposition to sending Italian troops to Iraq where the parliament is expected to vote on that issue once again. Interior Minister Giuseppe Pisanu announced security measures which widen the jurisdiction of security bodies in launching investigations and arrests in a bid to counter any terrorist threat.
