Flames rip through Islamic centre
AN Islamic study centre and book shop in central Hobart has been gutted by fire. Firefighters were called to the Sufi Study Centre and Islamic Book Shop in Liverpool Street at 7.15am (AEST) today. All peak-hour pedestrian and vehicle traffic was blocked, causing lengthy delays for city workers.
A police spokesman said there was no sign of forced entry to the building, but police investigators were yet to examine the scene. The fire was contained to the second storey of the building, which also houses a Chinese restaurant and miniature model shop. The other businesses sustained only smoke and water damage, the spokesman said. Hobart mosque Imam Sabri Samson, said there had been no threats against Muslims in Tasmania to date and he hoped the fire had not been deliberately lit.
