Downer warns of nuclear terrorism threat
Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer says there is a real risk that terrorists will acquire weapons of mass destruction.Mr Downer has launched a report outlining Australia's efforts to combat the proliferation of nuclear weapons. He says the world has changed since the end of the Cold War, with the main threat to global security now coming from rogue states and terrorist groups like Al Qaeda and Jemaah Islamiah. "Jemaah Islamiah's spiritual leader Abu Bakar Bashir recently stated that the use of nuclear weapons was justified if necessary," Mr Downer said. "We know all too sadly the deadly effect of Jemaah Islamiah's home-made bombs but can we conceive the devastation were they ever to get their hands on weapons of mass destruction?"
