Explosion kills 1 at Russian police dorm
An explosion ripped through a police dormitory in St. Petersburg on Tuesday, killing a retired police officer, Russian news agencies reported.Citing police and prosecutors, the Interfax and RIA-Novosti new agencies reported that the explosion occurred in 10th story apartment in the building and that its resident, a retired police officer, was thrown from a window by the force of the blast and killed. According to RIA-Novosti, police said there were no other casualties. A district prosecutor, Andrei Stepantsov, said the blast was apparently caused by an explosive device but that authorities were having trouble getting through a locked door to investigate, Interfax reported. It quoted an unnamed police official as saying it could not have causes by natural gas because only electric stoves are used in the building. But RIA-Novosti said police believed a gas canister could have blown up. It quoted an unidentified police official as saying neighbors had heard a loud bang and that the man was thrown from a window of his apartment. Stepantsov said the man, identified as Renat Akhmedzyanov, had quit the St. Petersburg police force last year, Interfax reported.
