Afghan war criminals âmust leave government, face trialâ
KABUL - A conference on reconciliation in Afghanistan demanded on Thursday that people involved in rights abuses in the countryâs two decades of war be removed from government and face prosecution.
Would seem to be rather sensible. | Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah however rejected suggestions there were human rights violators in official positions and said only the courts could decide who had been involved in past abuses.
There is a pressing need âto remove human rights abusers from positions of power,â said a statement issued at the end of the conference attended by about 200 people, including from the UN, rights groups and government officials. âThe removal of human rights violators from government and other official positions is regarded as a prerequisite to improving security conditions and creating an environment conducive to other transitional justice activities,â it said.
âParticipants also expressed a strong desire to see prosecutions of perpetrators.â
