'Threat' to US Malaysian mission
The US embassy in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, has been closed in response to what US officials called a terrorist threat. Officials said they were alerted to the threat via several sources and viewed the intelligence as credible. A spokesman was unable to say when the mission would re-open, but said it was in any case due to be closed on Monday for the New Year holiday. Militants in Asia have often seen Western embassies as targets. In September 2004, 11 people died when militants bombed the Australian embassy in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta.
