France tightens immigration policies
French officials unveiled legislation to toughen admission standards for unskilled, low-income immigrants but easing it for highly qualified foreigners.The government's bill includes the introduction of a three-year work permit for scientists, executives and academics, the International Herald Tribune reported Friday. But unskilled migrants from outside the European Union would find it harder to enter France -- even if they already have close relatives in the nation. "The most qualified migrants, the most dynamic and competent ones head to the American continent, while immigrants with little or no skills come to Europe," a spokesman said.
