Another Moderate Heard From: Calls to Kill Gays
Earlier this week Chief Mufti Talgat Tadzhuddin warned that Russia's Muslims would stage violent protests if the march went ahead. "If they come out on to the streets anyway they should be flogged. Any normal person would do that -- Muslims and Orthodox Christians alike ... [The protests] might be even more intense than protests abroad against those controversial cartoons."The march in question is a gay-rights march. The odds that the Muslims who gave the Chief Mufti his position will remove him are nil. Talgat's a moderate by most accounts; notably, he opposed violence over the Danish cartoons. A different Muslim leader disagreed with Talgat, saying that gays shouldn't be flogged or stoned, because that would be illegal. No mention if it would be immoral, though.
