Gitmo's gotta go, sez Berlusconi
ROME - The United States should close its Guantanamo Bay prison as swiftly as possible, Italys Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi was quoted as saying on Thursday, a week before meeting US President George W. Bush in Washington.
Berlusconi, one of Bushs staunchest European allies, made the comment in an interview with Al Jazeera, in which he was asked if Guantanamo should be closed down. Yes, I have spoken about it with many of my colleagues and I too think that these centres, where episodes have taken place that have been condemend by the whole world, must be closed as swiftly as possible, said Berlusconi.
It's not possible right now. Thanks for asking. | The comments were contained in a transcript of the interview made available to Italys ANSA news agency. The interview, recorded in Rome on Tuesday, is to be broadcast by the Qatar-based channel on Friday.
Bush is to hold talks with Berlusconi at the White House on February 28.
