Boxer wants troops pulled in 6 months
U.S. troops should be withdrawn from Iraq in no more than six months, and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s children should be dispatched as U.S. emissaries to war-torn Sudan, U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer said Tuesday.
Boxer, D-Calif., also said she believes Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., should have paid for boxing tickets he accepted free from the Nevada Athletic Commission as it tried to influence his legislation on federal regulation of the sport.
Boxer in a news conference on her Iraq and Darfur initiatives at the Golden Gate Bridge Toll Plaza administration building said she does not believe Reid's acceptance of free ringside tickets rises to the level of corruption seen among certain Republican lawmakers in recent months, but it could have created an appearance of impropriety.
"If I were him I would just write a check" for the tickets, she said, adding she has done the same when receiving gifts that otherwise might seem aimed at winning her legislative support. "I don't want anyone to think it might."
