McKinney Headed for Runoff
Rep. Cynthia McKinney acknowledged about 12:50 a.m. that she is headed for a runoff election to see if she will represent the 4th District in Congress for a seventh term. With 98 percent of precincts reporting, McKinney had 46.9 percent of the vote, compared with 44.5 percent for Henry C. Hank Johnson Jr., a former DeKalb County commissioner. A third candidate, Alpharetta businessman John F. Coyne III, received 8.6 percent of the vote. A candidate must receive more than 50 percent of the vote to avoid a runoff. She pledged in a speech to fight for her seat. The battle is now engaged and we intend to win, she said. It is impossible to keep a good woman down. She also touted her opposition to the Iraq war and her ability to bring money to the district. I dont mind speaking truth to power and I intend to speak truth to empower, she said. The district encompasses most of DeKalb, half of Rockdale County and a sliver of Gwinnett County. A runoff will be held Aug. 8.
