Indian police battle militants in Kashmir capital
SRINAGAR, India - A fierce gunbattle between Indian security forces and Islamist militants raged near a university in Kashmirs main city on Friday, police and witnesses said. Hundreds of police and paramilitary forces surrounded a house, believed to be a militant hideout, near the agriculture university in eastern Srinagar, Kashmirs summer capital.
Heavy exchange of fire has continued since the morning. One or more militants are holed up in a house, a security official said.
Officials said they had cordoned off the area and evacuated residents before shooting began at 9:30 am (0400 GMT).
