 Eight suspected Islamic militants were shot dead by troops in Indian-held Kashmir on Wednesday in gunbattles, police said. Seven of the militants were killed in three gunbattles in northern Kashmir along the heavily-militarised ceasefire line that divides the state with Pakistan, police officer Mohammed Subhan said. The gunbattles erupted early Wednesday when army and police launched searches in the district (of Kupwara), he said, adding that the militants opened fire injuring two Indian soldiers. The eighth militant was shot dead during another gunbattle in southern Kashmir, he said. The latest violence came as Indian foreign secretary Shiv Shankar Menon winds up two days of talks with his Pakistani counterpart Riaz Mohammed Khan that are part of a slow-moving peace process aimed at the Kashmir dispute and broader issues of terrorism.
