Guinea Bissau: Ex PM runs to UN office to escape arrest
(SomaliNet) Guinea-Bissaus ex Prime Minister, Carlos Gomes Jr. has sought refuge at a UN office in the country to escape arrest, shortly after he alleged that the countrys president, Joao Bernardo Vieira, was responsible for the death of a former military commander.
Guinea-Bissau's Interior Minister ordered for Gomes arrest after his statement. However, he managed to escape to safety to the UN offices. According to his spokesperson, Oscar Barbosa, Gomes arrest would have been illegal. "He's the president of a political party. His attempted detention is unacceptable," Barbosa told AP.
Gomes alleged that Vieira is behind the killing of militants responsible for his 1999 overthrow. Vieira was overthrown in 1999, only to recover power over Guinea Bissau in 2005. Lat week, Mohaed Lamine Sanha, a former military officer was murdered. This sparked off Gomes comments.
