Hizbullah: Resignation is proof we won
Hizbullah declared on Wednesday that IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Dan Halutz's resignation was further proof the guerilla organization defeated the Israeli army in the summer's 33-day war. Al-Manar, Hizbullah's official television station, interrupted broadcasts with reports that Halutz quit his post because of "failures in the last war." Hizbullah leaders were yet to issue an official statement. Syria state television said Halutz's resignation was the latest "blow to the government of Ehud Olmert, which is subjected to a string of political scandals, the most prominent being the opening of a criminal investigation which implicates Olmert himself for corruption." A spokesman for the Gaza-based Popular Resistance Committees said Halutz was being punished for the "blood spilled in Lebanon," while Abu Obaidah, spokesman for Hamas's armed wing, asserted that he resigned not only because of Lebanon, but also because the IDF had been unable to quell the resistance in the Gaza Strip. "Halutz couldn't bring Gilad Shalit home or stop the rockets," Abu Obaidah told Israel Radio. "[His resignation] proves that a military solution is useless, that Israel has failed."
