Debka: Putin promises countermeasures against US missile defense sites in Eastern Europe
At his annual news conference Thursday, Feb. 1, Putin said: "Our experts dont believe Washingtons claims that the proposed sites are intended to counter missile threats to Europe from Iran." Tehrans missiles, he argued, are not capable of reaching Europe. Russias reaction, said Putin, would be "asymmetrical but highly efficient."Russias newest Topol-M intercontinental ballistic missiles, said the president, are capable of penetrating missile defenses. The next-generation missiles will be capable of changing the altitude and direction of their flight on their way to target. "Missile defense systems are helpless against that," Putin asserted.
