Love gone astray

Lawyer, corrupt Jersey pol, screwing an active duty soldier in Iraq. He'll be tough to beat for Scumbag of the Year.
Today is Valentine's Day, a great day for lovers. But Tuesday was a very bad day for Cupid. To be more precise, Malik Cupid, a Corzine administration aide who was charged with straying down the lovelorn path to steal $1,400 from his old girlfriend's bank account.

Cupid, chief of staff to New Jersey's secretary of state, was charged with hacking into the former girlfriend's account while she was serving on active duty with the Army in Iraq, officials said. He was also charged with using subterfuge to illegally gain access to his ex-girlfriend's e-mail account and reading her private messages, said Lucian Chalfen, a spokesman for the Westchester County District Attorney's Office in New York.

Cupid, an attorney, was arraigned Tuesday -- which was also his 31st birthday -- in a White Plains courtroom in Westchester County.
Happy birthday, asshole.
New York authorities have charged him with four felony counts, including grand larceny, identity theft and eavesdropping. If convicted, he faces up to 16 years in state prison. No plea was entered at his arraignment. However, his attorney, Jaime Santana, later said: "These are mere accusations. There was a relationship at some time. We're just asking for our fair day in court." He was released without bail until a May 15 court date.
I'll bet you are, counselor. I wonder how many skids are being greased at this very moment...
... shouldn't take more than two ...
Efforts to contact Cupid for comment Tuesday evening were not successful.
Maybe you could get him online? Use the ex-girlfriend's email...
A spokeswoman for Secretary of State Nina Mitchell Wells said her office would look into the incident. "We take charges like this seriously," said the spokeswoman, Caryl Lucas. "We are getting further information on this matter and will be reviewing it to determine what actions to take. We also must take into account due process of law."

Lucas declined to comment on whether Cupid will be returning to work at his ground floor office in the State House, where his salary is $102,350.
My guess...ummmmmmmmmmmmm...no. But it is New Jersey...
Cupid's arrest last Friday followed a monthlong probe by the White Plains police in Westchester, where his former girlfriend maintained a bank account, officials said. Cupid and the former girlfriend, Terra Melson, met in law school, a knowledgeable source said.
I'll show you! I'll show everybody!
Chalfen said that Cupid sent e-mails to his former girlfriend telling her that he had obtained her password and had assumed her America Online "persona." He informed Melson that he was reading her e-mails, Chalfen said.
What a smart guy. He must be a great lawyer...
He certainly has the hubris ...
Investigators followed the electronic trail, determining that Cupid had gained access to Melson's account and had transferred her funds to an account in his name, Chalfen said.
Yeah, he only makes 102G's a year. I'm sure he needed the 1400.
Cupid was first hired by Corzine in January 2006 and appointed to serve as a Cabinet liaison officer in the Governor's Office. He was appointed chief of staff for the Department of State on April 8.
10 months in won't get you much of a pension, Malik. But, like I said, it is Jersey...
