UAE clerics okay SMS divorces
Islamic clerics in the United Arab Emirates said on Thursday that a Muslim divorce could be carried out via mobile phone text messages (SMS). The countrys Grand Mufti, Ahmed al-Haddad, who has issued a fatwa on the subject, however, noted that Islamic clerics disagreed on whether divorce could be granted through a verbal proclamation or through a written application.
Nevertheless, he said he believed that an Islamic judge or mufti was able to judge a divorce case filed via an SMS, based on any of the two diametric opinions by simply choosing what was most applicable to a couples circumstances.
