Officer shields soldier with his own body at drill, both survive
(Itar-Tass) -- Major Dmitry Ostroverkhov, an officer of the Baltic Fleet, has rescued a private, shielding him with his own body as a grenade exploded during a drill. The incident occurred at the Pervomaisky Training Center during a hand grenade handling drill, press service chief of the Baltic Fleet Yuri Kuroyedov told Tass on Wednesday. The officer heard a characteristic sound, indicating an early start of the detonator, when the private was in a trench. The officer reacted instantaneously: he forced the private out of the trench and shielded him with his body. The officer received fragmentation wounds of medium seriousness as the grenade exploded in the well-protected trench. The wounded officer was hospitalized. There is no threat to his life. The private has survived the accident unhurt. Acting Baltic Fleet Commander Vice-Admiral Vasily Apanovich and Chairman of the Kaliningrad regional Duma Sergei Bulychev visited the wounded officer at his hospital bed.
