Egyptian sailors released in Puntland
17 Egyptian sailors are reported to have been released from jail in Bosaso city in the semi-autonomous region of Puntland in northeast Somalia. The freed sailors were crewmembers boarding on a vessel that was fishing illegally in Puntland water.The vessel and its crew were sentenced by the Puntland central court to pay large amount of fine for illegal fishing. The lawyer of the defendants argued that there was no hooked fishes on the vessel. The vessel was said to have been contracted by Somali businessmen after having admission from Puntland authority. The release of the Egyptian sailors came after the Egyptian envoy to Somalia visited Puntland recently over the hostage of the Egyptian citizens. Posted by: Pappy 2007-05-22 |
