US diplomat found dead in Cyprus
The defence attache at the US embassy in Cyprus has been found dead in a remote part of the Mediterranean island four days after he went missing, state radio reported on Monday. Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation radio said Tom Mooney had been found dead in a remote area west of Nicosia and that police were at the scene. There was no confirmation from the US embassy or police. Someone has been found dead and police have gone to the area to confirm and identify it is the body of a missing person, a police spokesman said. The private television station Sigma said the body was found a short distance from the diplomats car on a dirt track in forested hills outside the capital. We cant confirm anything at this stage, a US embassy spokesman said. The 45-year-old diplomat, who is married with children, was last seen leaving the US embassy in Nicosia around midday on Thursday. Police said Sunday they had been searching for Mooney, who has the rank of lieutenant-colonel, after he had been reported missing by his embassy. Later reports have said he was found alone with a large self-inflicted knife wound in his neck and all the standard disclaimers. |
