Spatulas Down! Mayor Temporarily Bans Nighttime Grilling In Small Town
CANONSBURG, Pa. -- The mayor of Canonsburg, Washington County, issued a temporary executive order last week banning barbecuing or grilling after 8 p.m.
Mayor Anthony Colaizzo said the ban only pertained to charcoal grills, not gas.
He'd a been tarred and feathered and run out of town on a rail anywhere in the South.
He said the order was part of an overall ban on recreational burning that's causing too much smoke in the town. Recreational Burning? At least no schools or churces will be burned by you know who. They regularly practice Recreational Burning.
"We're not an affluent community," Colaizzo said. "A lot of people don't have air conditioning, and there was a lot of people that couldn't even keep their windows open at night because these recreational fires were making smoke and toxic smells and a lot of them had respiratory illness."
Colaizzo said police have been having a hard time enforcing the ban.
They usually get invited to the BBQ and Beer party.
"When the police would arrive, right away they would put out a wiener and a marshmallow and they would say it was for recreational purposes," said Colaizzo.
Put out a weiner? Here again the snarks just write themselves.
After getting grilled by angry residents, Colaizzo rescinded the grilling order Thursday and said he was only trying to close a loophole in the borough burning ordinance.
"There are many more things that need to be watched other than if I make a hot dog or a piece of kielbasa after 8," said resident Rose Terkey, 51.
MMM, smoked kielbasa with sourkraut and a beer. I'm already hungry. Wonder if Rose would mind if I dropped by some evening.
Howard Rhome, the head of the Backyard Burning Bunch, said families gather around fire pits for recreational burning.
I think we've just found a new Rantburg prhase to describe Jihadi fires. Reacreational Burning.
He said during one of the gatherings, police showed up and made him tear it down.
Colaizzo said a meeting is scheduled for Tuesday with Council to discuss the recreational ban.
