'Pakistan, Afghanistan and US must unite to combat extremism'
An American expert on South Asia has urged tripartite cooperation between Pakistan, the US and Afghanistan in combating the terrorist threat posed by Al Qaeda and the Taliban and securing regional peace, according to a report released on Friday.
Lisa Curtis, senior research fellow in the Asian Studies Centre at The Heritage Foundation, asserts in the report, displayed on the Fox News website, that Al Qaeda has retrenched in Pakistans tribal areas, a claim substantiated by a recent United Nations report indicating that 80 percent of suicide bombings in Afghanistan originate from Pakistans tribal regions. The US, she says, has sufficient reason to target the militants but is hampered by how it can proceed without destabilising Pakistan.
