US troops kill 10 insurgents, detain 22 others in ops against al-Qaida
US troops on Sunday killed 10 suspected insurgents - six of them said to be foreign fighters - and detained 22 others in operations targeting al-Qaida in central Iraq, the military said. In a raid near the oil-rich Kirkuk area, 290 kilometers (180 miles) north of Baghdad, US troops searched for a provincial al-Qaida figure in charge of foreign fighters. In clashes with militants there, eight suspected insurgents were killed. Iraqis on the scene said six of them were foreign nationals. However, their nationalities were not released. In a raid near Samarra, 95 kilometers (60 miles) north of Baghdad, which the military said targeted a senior al-Qaida leader involved in a kidnapping network, two militants were killed and two detained.
