Hurriyat activist sentenced to jail for receiving funds from Pakistan
NEW DELHI: A city court here on Friday sentenced Hurriyat activist Zamrooda Habib Anjum to five-year imprisonment under a stringent anti-terrorist law for receiving money “intended to be used for terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir” from the Pakistan High Commission (PHC) in February 2003. Additional Sessions Judge Ravinder Kaur held Zamrooda guilty of accepting more than Rs 300,000 from the then Pakistan Deputy High Commissioner Jalil Abbas Jilani “to be used for terrorist activities in J&K”.

The court also refused to entertain a defence plea that the Hurriyat Conference was a political organisation. It also rejected the pleas seeking leniency for Zamrooda for her being a political activist. Earlier, making a last-ditch effort after being convicted, a visibly depressed Zamrooda pleaded for leniency in the sentence. She told the judge that she had suffered a lot and committed no crime. “I have suffered in jail for the last four years and eight months and my health has also deteriorated,” she said. Judge Ravinder Kaur said that a five-year imprisonment was the least punishment under the Prevention of Terrorist (activities) Act.
