Peres takes the Saudi hook
  • Support was building for a Saudi peace plan for the Middle East, as Israel and the Palestinians resumed security talks aiming at halting the bloodshed. EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana said Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was ready to meet any Saudi leader to discuss the initiative. Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, perhaps the most dovish member of Sharon's government, welcomed the Saudi plan during a visit to France, noting it was the "first time that Saudi Arabia has openly joined the peace process."
