Five shot dead in southern Thailand
Suspected Islamic terrorists rebels shot dead five people in separate attacks in Thailand's restive south, as the country's new army chief began a two-day visit to the troubled region.

A Muslim couple in their 20s was gunned down by terrorists militants in their house in Yala, one of three violence-plagued provinces bordering Malaysia, police said. In nearby Pattani province, a 35 year-old Muslim religious teacher was killed in a drive-by shooting, while two Muslim workers were shot dead in neighboring Narathiwat province. Police added a 32-year-old Buddhist woman and her teenage daughter were wounded in a drive-by shooting on Tuesday in Yala.

General Anupong Paojinda, who became army chief on October 1, began a two-day visit to the violence-torn region on Tuesday and is scheduled to hold talks with army commanders, police and local officials, the army said.
