Coup rumors in Mindanao
A top Army official in south-central Mindanao declared their forcesâ solid support to the administration of President Arroyo amid fresh rumors of coup in the country. Maj. Gen. Generoso Senga, Armyâs 6th Infantry Division commander based in Maguindanao, just laughed off rumors about coup plots in the country following the controversial impeachment issue against Supreme Court Chief Justice Hilario Davide Jr. Armed Forces chief of staff Gen. Narciso Abaya Jr. also played down and described as recycled story the reported plot to destabilize the Arroyo administration. Senga made the assurance on Wednesday after a published report came out recently, where a retired commodore of the Navy has been identified as one of those going around military camps in Mindanao in the past three weeks ârecruitingâ commanders to join a plot to destabilize the Arroyo administration. The report also showed that the ongoing recruitment âis very strong in Mindanao.â âNow we are more solid. We are fully supportive of our government. We are adhering to the chain of command, and our soldiers remain loyal,â Senga stressed. âIâve been going around in my area of jurisdiction in past days visiting our troops. Iâm emphasizing to them that we should remain loyal to our Constitution and respect the chain of command,â he added. At the same time, Senga stressed that there was no truth to the coup report, saying that they were only âgossipsâ aimed to confuse the public.
