Blasphemy convict acquitted by LHC
The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday acquitted a blasphemy convict, Muhammad Sharif, and observed that the police should not register such cases without checking veracity of the facts. The LHC accepted Sharif’s appeal against his conviction and acquitted him from the charge. On June 23, 2005, an additional sessions judge had sentenced Sharif to life imprisonment with a fine of Rs 50,000. The LHC stated that the legal requirements of lodging such a case had not been fulfilled and the prosecution had also failed to prove the allegation. The Gujranwala police had lodged a case against Sharif for allegedly uttering derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
