Drag Judge Convicted In DWI Case Resigns

A Boston-based federal bankruptcy judge has resigned after pleading guilty to drunken driving in New Hampshire. Bankruptcy Judge Robert Somma resigned Friday, effective April 1. He'll be on leave until then.

The resignation comes after a newspaper reported that Somma was in drag when he was stopped by police on Feb. 6. The Union Leader of Manchester, N.H., reported Somma was wearing a cocktail dress and high heels.

Somma did not contest the driving charge and was found guilty on Wednesday. His license was suspended for a year in New Hampshire and he paid $600 in fines and penalties.
Somma, of Newbury, was appointed in 2004. Gary Wente, Circuit Executive of the First Circuit in Boston, said Somma resigned to put the incident behind him. He called Somma a "brilliant" "hard-working" jurist and said he would be sorely missed.
